I was looking at this a few days ago and wondering why I hadn't seen a comment made about our quickly slipping 2nd place standing in the WCG thread yet. It appears inevitable though, not enough crunchers crunching--not that I contribute a whole lot to the cause:(.

I don't care whether we're the 3rd or even 4th daily producer. What matters to me is that we're beating teams that have 10x the number of daily contributors.

its not about how much you put out a day, its about the dedication and consistancy. imo, its better to have someone with a steady output of a lil than someone that comes for a month or two and puts out a bunch and then leaves.

Martijn and dragon both make good points. Furthermore let's keep in mind that we are up against whole centralized grids; "teams" that have the all the resources of a university computer science department behind them, for example.

I think it might partly be an economic thing. A lot of the people here have multiple computers that run 24/7 and when utility bills go up you notice it. My bill was over $600 last month while last year it was closer to $500 - even though the rates are about the same. Then there's issue of buying new equipment when you're not sure if you'll have a job in a couple months. While teams with more members are less sensitive since they usually have just a couple rigs that they would be running anyway.
I think a lot of people are intimidated by the team too. If you're an average computer user you're not going to gravitate to a team that you see as being hard core techies. I don't care if people laugh at me because I don't know something, but most people do. Of course I know that we are a friendly bunch, but I have to wonder if that's how people see us. I'm not saying we should change, just that our potential base is a lot smaller than other teams.

Yeah, I should get a few more quads running. Then I'll save money on heating oil. I wonder how you convert watts to BTU's. Hmmmm . . . :)

I think you have many very good points there!, i joined with a amd 3500+ 939 at first, and i got too admit, it felt abit pointless compared to the heavy hitters on this team(at that time). But it isnt about how much you bring to the table, this place is about contributing together, about friendship and community, this is a place you can call "home". We all share the same passion for computing here, you dont need to be rich too have that passion.
We also share a passion to make the world a better place, and we can, it could be a via c7 that cracks the code of cancer or Dave`s harry harpertown,We dont know. But we all do fantastic work, its the willingness to contribute that is important.(think i learnt that from Dave).
I always felt welcomed here, and i hope that many more will discover that!
This is the best team in the world, and you(yes, you, reading this)can make this even better by joining us!

Give me about 2 weeks, and you'll see the daily output of this and the F@H teams rise. :p: (E2140 will drop onto the Grid and HD3850 will help our friends at F@H)

Ya but we got Harpertowns.. and soon Bloomfields/Gainestowns I'll bet
They probably run on crappy old P4 Xeons.. a few 100-1000 though :D
Very true about the economic situation though. Running the Harper costs 1,6€ in electricity per day, that is close to 50€ a month. The phase rig eats double that, which is why I will need to shut it down at night :(
Counting the 2nd Harper I wanna have up and running soon, as well as the various other rigs, I come to something like 150-200€ a month just for the cruncher's electric bill (no parts included...), which is a lot considering I am 21 and not even a big hitter (yet :D )

First Thank you.
I just read through this thread and you said it very well.
Yes, there are some "heavy hitters" here and God bless them for what they bring to the cause but in my mind this is a team of people that I call "Good hearts" because of what is inside them.
That wanting to do something to help others even though it does bring a cost with it.
We all do what we can whether it's one machine or 101..
There is no difference in what is inside the persons heart just what their financial ability is.
That is why the guy with his older P4 or A64 rig is just as welcome here as the guy with his new QX9650 rig.
When I see posts here I don't see numbers but a person.
I've learned that in this life there are the "me" people and the "us" people.
The me people would screw over their families to get ahead.
Not the way I want to live my life.
I've passed on a lot of opportunities in this life where I could have made lots of money but at someone elses expense.
I may struggle at times to pay the bills but I don't have to worry about who I screwed over yesterday in pursuit of the immortal buck.
Now as to this team, 4 mill or 44 mill a day is really irrelevant.
If we are all doing what we can as individuals then that is what counts and in the end we will get the job done.
The only thing I'm sorry about is that I didn't find this place years ago as this is the best group of people I've ever been ascoiated with.

1 watt = 3.412 BTUs
As NaeKuh said, winter is coming and the extra heat can be harnessed to offset the electric bill. With as few members as we have returning work on a daily basis NO team equals ours. We kick their arses day in and day out.

I heated my entire home for the last three years with my computers. Used about 14 gals. Kerosene over that period. Not blistering hot but comfortable.

Just so you understand, this is a DC team, not a sperm bank. (just kidding - it was too perfect to pass up :D)

I hear that. Whenever I start kicking myself for not making certain decisions, I remind myself that I can sleep well because of them.

And for my excuse... my power and cooling bills will be covered by my university. Internet too. I'll have more trouble if I get a Miami apartment--when I have to cover power + cooling myself.

That is what I think it is. EN doesn't have the structure to "ramp up" as WE know it.

Like others have said...you really can't go past this TEAM of users...heck, most of the 250+ users who are regularly returning something, anything are generally known to others...that is the difference between a team of 250 and a group of unknowns doing it for something free...the only good thing in all of that is that they are also helping the actual cause of why we do this!!!!

Yeah, when I first dropped in about a year ago I could tell that the people here were pretty sincere in regards to their motivation for folding. Although its nice to see a small group of people taking on the big dogs and holding their own I know there's more to folding than just massing huge amounts of work points for the sake of standings.
Since its starting to cool down here I've been running my quad for longer periods of time and now that I finally have a few days off from work I can finally get my x6800 going for 24 hour crunching.

no wait til sept. 5th.
CD + MM + Me + Andy just on the competition alone ~150K - 160K
40k each spread saying we tie. Basically its a battle of the 4ghz Quad fest. Andy and i have 2 quads, dave and CD get there ST rig with cherry harpers.
Then ima drop the rest to get my 10M hallmark so thats another 50-60K. Depends how many computers i can fit in the office.
My points will be pure addage, since ive been sleeping during the summer. :T
