As Per the title. I'v seen the inside of a phase seperater and they seem like they do the same thing (seperate liquid from gas)

Impingement: These are usually 60% to 85% effective, and are a cylindrical screen on both the inlet and outlet ports with a solid baffle in between. Oil conglomerates in the screens and drips down into the pool of oil at the bottom. There is a float that actuates a valve to meter the oil out of the separator as the level rises.

Helical: These are more effective than impingement, but don't exceed maybe high 90's effectiveness. Can be as simple as an inlet that comes into a vessel tangentially, and an outlet on the top center of the vessel. They can also have internal helical flutes. Again a pool at the bottom and a float valve. These are velocity dependant, i.e. you can't over or undersize them.

Coalescent: Very effective, 98% to 99.9%. The inlet goes to a glass fiber filter that behaves like an impingement screen, but way better. Nothing on the outlet except a baffle to protect the filter. These can be used very oversized, but not undersized as the glass filter does creat a pressure drop proportional to the flowrate of discharge gas. the glass filter also filters debris very well, but debris can also clog the filter and create too much pressure drop. Can have a float valve in the bottom, or a reservoir in the bottom, or just an oil drain.
