Mine was Jet Fighter 2 I bought just after buying my first PC ... a 386 DX 33 with DOS5 back in about 1990, quite fitting really as the machine I owned before that was an Amiga 500 that shipped with FA /18 Interceptor that was the predecessor to this game.

Fast fwd to now and I'm still playing Flight Sim's ! First actual game for the PC would have been Lucas Arts Indiana Jones and the Fate of Atlantis point and click adventure, great game in its time.

What was yours?

The first one was Bard's Tale on an Apple IIe. I then fell out of the game (heh) for awhile. Played Quake SP in the mid-90s but it was the original Unreal that roped me back in 10 years ago.

Mine was back in probably 96/9. You were a space shuttle who travelled along these coloured block / level type things, you'd have to press left / right / up / down to get to the next brick whilst flying, it was all in a straight line.

Does ANYONE know what this game is called? I used to totally love it!

Falcon 1.0

I played that and its add ons on the Amiga 500, Falcon 3 and its add ons was the first in the series I played on the PC ... It was Falcon 3 that prompted my first upgrade so I could benefit from a maths co processor and this was my first PC build in fact, built a 486 DX2 66, 4MB ram, Tseng 1MB graphic card (this was before VLB) and I bought one of the first Thrustmaster HOTAS for it ... great times :)

first one I played was Doom II on a friend's pc in 1995. First game I bought and played was Quake II after I acquired my first computer in 1998 (Pentium 233/3DFX Voodoo/64 MB RAM...)...followed by Unreal and Half Life...I consider these 3 games (QII/HL/Unreal) as what started the whole 3D gaming madness

The first Human opposition I experienced would have been with my 486, a friend who had a similar computer left it at mine for a week, we hooked them up together with a null modem cable, it took a lot of figuring out ... this was with DOS 6, remember.

But eventually we got Doom or it might have been Doom 2? but definitely, Falcon 3, Tornado and 1942 the Pacific Air War synced and talking over this short cable ... hard work back in those DOS days.

I was a Flight Sim Geek back then too, so had first gen TM HOTAS and my *then* current TM HOTAS of the time arrangements on same desk, my opponent was right to me on other side of desk and I could not see his screen, he could not see mine, we both had similar HOTAS controllers (he was using my older one) ... though in fairness, I had more experience with mine:)

Eventually battle ensued, we tried Tornado first, we could synch OK but only once saw each other in the air very briefly, we both vowed to stop and actually read the manuals ... my god, they were thick manuals in those days.

Next up ... Falcon 3 ... I was on top and greased my friend, same with 1942 Pacific Air war, this was down to my hours practicing flight sims and combat and familiarity of both sims though.

Finally, Doom ... my friend greased me in this game, he had been playing it solo, just as I had been playing flight sim solo and was better because of it.

Amazing when I think back on it.

I know this is supposed to be first game memory's, but what about your first memory's playing against another Human Player?

Please recall them.

Hard to remember...was ~91/92. My POS 386/16 only had 2MB RAM/42MB HDD@84MB via Stacker, so it wouldn't play much(so many TSR errors :ROTF: )...mostly shareware games on 5.25 floppy. Original Links was good, Leisure-Suit Larry :D and Wolfenstein. I spent millions of hours playing Pyramid Solitaire  .

The original Age of Empires. I used to play that game for hours on end. I played the second one even more. By the time the third one came out I was so into FPS's I realized I didn't even like RTS's anymore. However, Company of Heroes recently pulled me back into the genre, probably the best RTS I have every played.

We had some kind of Mac as our first family computer, and my dad bought some like Bert and Ernie Sesame Street game for us. I remember it being on a 5 inch floppy.

But, the first game that I consciously bought was Red Alert after playing it at my best friend's cousin's house. Sadly it didn't work with our Packard Bell at the time and I didn't get to play it for another 3 years when we got a new computer (Dell). I believe the next game(s) I bought were F22 Raptor and a tank game. They were too realistic for me at the time and I couldn't do more than get the plane off the runway. I stuck with a Playstation for a few years for gaming, then when I got my own computer bought a bunch of strategy and turn based games and went on from there.

Magic candle 3

Interestingly enough, when i first bought it the game had a bug that prevented me from getting a key quest item. So i played through amassing every possible item but never actually winning.

recently, i found the game again on some "abandonware" sites and played it again. I figure the company was gone and i already paid for it so it was fair game to download it.

Finally beat it and got to the ending.

I can now brag it took me 18 years to beat that game :D

It was SWAT 3: Close Quarter Battles, back in early December 1999 (was actually released in late November of the same year). I remember running it on my PCI XFX GeForce 4 MX-440 64MB Sucky Edition at first (I still got that card in its original box to this very day, and I'm sure it'd still work). Best shooter ever made period end of story. My friends and I started playing it the first day the demo was released. We joined a clan full of super guys and girls and even went as high as #1 in TWL till the cheating became real bad. It is a shame that almost nobody plays any longer. I hop in once in a while but there are very few servers with anybody playing. Our clan was RVS only and when it died out so did our clan. I sure do miss those guys we had many many fun nights.

I think it was a few, NFS: Porsche Unleashed, Flight Simulator 2000, and Combat flight sim. I didn't really get into PC gaming until around BF2 came out.

first game i ever played was either leisure suit larry (original typed commands) or police quest! that was a long long time ago! I spent so many hours trying to figure out the 18yr+ question protection on leisure suit larry as a 5yr old! if it couldnt even keep a little kid like me out, it was pretty useless! gone are the protections of yester-year!

the day i remember most was when i bought my first soundblaster 8bit card! that changed the whole pc experience, pc speaker became a thing of the past! i remember saving up my allowance to buy that $50 card! it was expensive back then toO!

one of the first games i bought was Curse of Monkey Island back in 90 or 91.

Mine was back in probably 96/9. You were a space shuttle who travelled along these coloured block / level type things, you'd have to press left / right / up / down to get to the next brick whilst flying, it was all in a straight line.

Does ANYONE know what this game is called? I used to totally love it!

maybe this? Skyroads (http://www.abandonia.com/en/games/63/Skyroads.html)

Mine was Digger (http://www.oldgames.nu/Digger/Digger/77/) & Castle Adventure (http://www.abandonia.com/en/games/226/Castle+Adventure.html)

Those were the days :D

Man! Skyroads! that game was awesome! I remember I played it even when I upgraded to XP...

I also remember playing a game that was similar. You were a spaceship that had to destroy others and the first level was a red floor one. This spaceships werent really spaceships, I remember they looked like blue/white triangles/polygons. Second level was like on the moon and the big monster always killed me :( ....

Dont remember the name of this game though...

Hmmm I am dating myself pretty bad here but it was Kings Quest. I was addicted bad.

Oh man! This was one of the best games ever. We could not afford a computer on my mom's salary then, but I would walk down the street to an IBM store in downtown Cincinnati,OH and hang in there as long as I could to play this game.

I hate that fact that being in inner city schools did not give me a chance to be exposed to computers at an early age!

I would take me almost 11 years later to be exposed to the WWW and then another 3 before I would get my first pc.

Did any of you folk have access to a pc in the early to middle 80s??

Mid 80s? Not here unfortunately. Wasn't until maybe 95 that we got our first family Packard Bell.

Oh I struggle to think back that far.
For me it might have been Halloween Harry or Commander Keen? Remember playing that with friends out in the back room on his super computer :P

If I don't count games my parents already had loaded on the machine... I think it was "Where in the World is Carmen San Diego" on the mac, but that was a gift.

First bought game that wasn't a gift was the original "Age of Empires". I actually played that game so much online that my dad's $2,000 Pentium 200mhz laptop died after a few month and I had to sneak down stairs in the middle of the night. I think it was when I made a few maps with 1000 soldiers with the console hack and it took about 1 minute to process a frame.

Age of Empires 2 didn't fit on the 2GB hard drive with only 150MB remaining, so I had to delete a bunch of stuff that he needed, and uninstall the game every night so there was space for other stuff and page file during the day.

The first one was Bard's Tale on an Apple IIe. I then fell out of the game (heh) for awhile. Played Quake SP in the mid-90s but it was the original Unreal that roped me back in 10 years ago.

I too played craploads of AppleII games including one where you were this square box w/ a hat and had to pick up and drop special crystals or something...

In addition, I played Doom and Quake and everything, but nothing got me into FPS like Unreal did, that brought me into computers and computer gaming bigtime. With that game I was motivated to get into level design, start building computers and much more.
