Wow...I did that?
I have been a Folding Fanatic for years. I only run WCG as an ancillary effort. But then I heard Dave getting all uppity and that was that.
Expect more of the same ;)
Don't tell Dave but the 4ghz QX9650 has been unleashed as well :D

Well I don't feel bad about setting Folding aside for a bit. I've been Folding nonstop for about 3 years and made it to something like RAnk 1,527 on the planet. Plus with guys running 42 GPU farms and getting 150K per day I don't feel quite so essential to the cause anymore.
Used to be 5K per day was God-like output...now the big hitters are 20K...a bit out of reach at the moment.
Plus I am heavily invested into CPU-power and just can't see re-building everything to take advantage of Nvidia power. So BOINCing it is :D

I love me some HDDs. I just decommissioned my RAID0 4 Raptor array and moved to a single VelociRaptor for now... I have room for 5 more though. Hmmmmm. Too bad Acronis will not clone to my 4 x Samsung F1 Areca1210 Array...330mb/sec in RAID0 ...sigh. That might have to wait. I have will probably have to upgrade the RAM in the ST if I want to keep up with Dave.

You know GPU and SMP crunches other wu's right, and that the SMP client is actually maybe atm even more 'usefull' then the gpu clients which need to mature more? Not saying we want you back... but let's stay honest to the cause and not make it seem cpu's have no place on fah no more :)
Marvin
Edit:
Well, I think it might seem abit off the mark maybe, but it's true that for points you would feel abandond by the project and overtaken left and right with people with measly gpu's doing 5x your ppd. But I just wanted to shed some light on the SCIENTIFIC need for cpu's to stay on fah, certainly quad and dual cores which can make use of the SMP client.

Well the plan is to WCG on the SkullTrail and QX9650 and GPU Fold on them as well (which works well if you tinker a bit).
The Techstation is always morphing. Right now it has a stellar Dualie in there..but who knows? I am looking at the 9800GX2 to add some oomph.
I am afraid I too willl be a GPU only FOlder for a while...gotta use the CPUs for WCG Cancer research ;)

Use vista as OS because it will drasticly reduce the cpu overhead from any gpu2 folding client.
And uhm.. I should have changed that signature already my quad is back on fah ( it done wcg for v0dka to test, he gpu folded on my account for the same time just to find out how a total fah noob would experience the folding experience with the beta client bugs and server issues )

dont get DFI if your gonna use a HD4870X2
Lets say my HD4870X2 is still unopened until DFI brings out a non beta bios fix.

I flashed my DFI X38 with a 2-day old bios today, which officially fixes the bugs with a HD4870X2.
Since you can flash an X38 with X48 bios and vice versa, I'd guess that problem is history on the X48, too.

Yeah you do ;)
Grab the latest one here (http://www.dfi.com.tw/Support/Download/bios_download_us.jsp?PRODUCT_ID=5719&STATUS_FLAG=B&SITE=US), but it worked with 0807 already, which was out a few days ago. That one only had issues with IDE drives, which was fixed in 821.
OC-wise it's ok, I could hold my OC from 0603 without changing anything.

It took me months to get the Areca1210 working right on the Skulltrail. It never occured to me to try the top slot
But I am so happy with the VelociRaptor I decided to use the Areca for Storage instead of Speed. Hard to beat a quick seek time. Sustained read of the HBA is awesome...but the Samsungs are twice as slow on seek.
I'm guessing Crunching is all about seek times once you get up around 100mb/sec...I would be surprised to see a measurable difference in output from 100 mb/sec to 200 mb/sec. But just in case I installed BOINC in a directory on the array :D I've seen slight increases using a drive sperate from the OS to run SuperPi so I assume that on a daily scale it would also add up in BOINC.
jcool
08-27-2008, 06:57 AM
I'd say what HDD you use has 0 influence on ppd generation ;)
All threads are crunched fully in ram, with only one small write operation to the hdd every few minutes (you can even change the write to hdd intervall manually).

08-27-2008, 09:22 AM
Ahhhh. THat makes sense. The QX9650 is producing Curing Cancer results every 2hours 37 minutes and the Skulltrail is taking almost exactly 3 hours. I fault the RAM for the huge difference in output. The E3110 is at 3.0 and it produce a unit every 3 hours 17 minutes. So far running a server for Crunching looks like a handicap despite the dependability factor.
If it were affordable a mess of E8600s would be the fastest Farm :D Running CAS3 RAM.

No, sorry. We've had that, ram speed and timings seem to have negligible effect at best ;)
But 3h for a HCC WU is very slow, assuming you run 4Ghz?
My 5420's need 3:17 on average, and they run a meagre 3225Mhz.
Q6600 takes 2:35 average at 4,1...

Well then my QX9650 and E3110 at 4ghz are getting right in the ballpark at 2:20ish times. The ST rig has actually gotten a touch faster turning 2:58is times...not sure why. I did increase the Vcore because I had a random restart in the night. Since then nothing untoward has occurred.
I setup Folding on the GPUs of the ST (and the E3110) and it is not effecting BOINC times from what I can see. In fact they seem to be faster. Talk about multitasking :D

I sort of ran it by her in my usual sideways manner...I explained I had been load testing the machine just to see what it could do and now I was done with that cough and I had detuned the machine so I could run it nearly silent again. THat and some anti-snore meds and I should stay ahead of you for a while :D
It's now the nearly silent machine...http://img509.imageshack.us/img509/7366/shazamwt1ni5.jpg
SO I am back up with 14 cores but the QX is running "stock" for a bit...which still puts out a fair amount of work. This way I can run the Enzo at 666 RPM and still get 42C load temps. At 4 ghz I was averaging 63C SanAce going full blast

I just picked up another QX9650 for a client...of course I'll have to test it...an extended load test...Crunching for instance...and since the case is not likely to be done for about a month I guess that might possibly bump my PPD...

Got most of the Client's parts ordered...enough to get it set up and benching. Good excuse to make another Tech Station. DDR3 1600, Dual HD4870X2s, QX9650, 2 150GB VelociRaptors in RAID0...I think it will scream. Should be about the fastest rig I've built for anybody.
I still have not found where to see my WCG stats/points. I just see my BOINC. Dave tells me that it's something like 7 times the BOINC numbers...I dunno. I do know that I should be breaking 300K in about 4 days.

Well I do have another client build scheduled...and he did have his Q6600 ES (unlocked multi ;)) shippped here...I might have to "test" it on a P5K dlx I have laying around gathering dust....you'll know it's Crunching if you see it in my sig:D And once I get MilSpec properly cooled it will run 4Ghz load this I am sure...and I have a feeling I might get that out of the Q6600 too with that unlocked multi.
That would be 88 Ghz online...hmmmm I like the sound of that....

Hey skinnee that's impressive. Don't make me start Crunching on the Wife's E6600, the Laptop and my Son's 560...
Maybe I better set up that Q6600 afterall.

CD...you are right on Sparky's heels too! Thanks...I'm having some problems with the E6550's, but those 8 core beasts I added are really helping out my PPD. Get those other machines on the grid ASAP!!!
fart_plume, bring them online quick! the more crunching we can get the better, I really want to see the team hit 6 million a day for a month straight.
Guys, all I am really trying to do here is spur on some friendly competition to get us over the 5 millions PPD hump. We had a short stay at 6m PPD, and I want to get back there. Just looking to add some excitement to the crunching.
Maybe for October we just calculate points for the month rather than cumulative grid points.

How many 8 cores you got crunching exactly? All E5345? Which mobos? Can you oc them?
Cause I noticed, the Dual Harps only start to fly after they are OCed... they hunger to be fed with sufficient data, ie FSB is crucial.

Back up and grinding out HCC.

3 Dual Harps (E5345), 1 Dual Clover (E5310), 2 Dual Woodcrest (5110), 1 Penyrn (Q9450), 1 Single Woodcrest (5110), and a grab bag of E6550's, P4D's and P4's...and a Dual PIII.
Can't OC the Dual Harps, Clovers or Woody's, Dell PowerEdge servers. Maybe a BSEL Mod, but thats about it.

E5345 is a Clovertown chip. You're sure you have Harpertowns ?

I hope they aren't gonna release a GPU client for WCG anytime soon.. or I'll have to upgrade to lots of vid cards, who need more cooling and eat lots more power :shakes: :ROTF:

I agree with you there, I have so much CPU power into WCG I would hate to see GPU's come into the mix. I am biased sure, GPU use is for folding IMO.

I just directed my buyings acordingly. I now got Dave to buy me one of those (http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16813131251R), and I'll probably get an X7DCA-L, too.
Counting my Z7S and DFI X38, I then have 7 PCIe Gen2 slots to fill with 4870X2 :D

I like ATI a bunch but they suck at Folding. My Guess is they will suck at WCG too. THe Powerhouse for Cuda type apps is the 9800GX2

Maybe, but the 9800GX2 sucks in anything BUT CUDA ;)
