Got my new aircon unit yesterday. The 10k BTU one. Took it apart to see its guts, lots of control electronics, yuck. More of them stupid fans. You know, the ones that look like a drum. So theyre a pain in the ass. Turns out the guy couldnt read the label, and it isnt R410a, its another R407c varient. A very dencent condenser.

If i replaced the POE with mineral oil. How much R290 would i need to add to R134a for it to work with mineral oil? I dont like the way poe turns acidic and goes all nasty and stuff. Plus the little bit of added r290 will lower temps some.

Why not use straight r290?

What do you mean about the POE turning acidic?

POE becomes acidic when it encounters moister in the air.

Why not use R404A/R290?

You can always clean POE to you know, put in a fresh unit, recharge with refrigerant, run it for 24 hours, recover, replace filter. There's a good article on Refrigeration Engineer on that, found that 24 hours through an overly large filter cleans the POE up incredibly well.

Why not use R404A/R290?
Because he probably does not have access to that.

mineral oil is just easier to come by. Neat R290 was my original plan but i dont want a repeat of toronto happening in my living room. Hence wanting to add a little shot to R134a to help oil carrage. on top of this, i dont want temps too low. R134a plus a high heat load will keep them under control.

Heh, r134a won't "help" oil carriage with r290. Oil is a hydrocarbon, as is r290, oil carriage is almost too good with r290 ;)

Thats my point NoL. I want to use R134a with mineral oil. R134a apparently doesnt like mineral oil so i wanna add a little bit of R290 to aid in carrying the oil round. Am i talking rubbish? That sounds right to me lol

Wicked. Now that that is sorted. How much R290 would i have to add to the mix for it to work properly. Percentages is fine if thats what you know. Or a set amount is cool. Both R290 and R134a are easy to come by in small amounts, so as soon as i get it all brazed up and cap tube sorted out. I'll be able to get this bad boy on the road!

what you doing up @ this time :) lol
why not just use R134a if its only a water chiller? poe is only £17 for 1L from RPW
today is friday the day i build a working water chiller in one day from scratch hhmmm we will see lol

What is RPW? You wanna PM me your number or somethin Evo? Think i might need to come check out your work and get some pointers from you. Is there anywhere in midlands i can walk in and buy cap tube, rather than ordering online and waiting a week for it. I may just use R134a then, you can get it from halfords, with the oil already in it, although i cant see that working if the tub doesnt know how much oil your compressor needs. We'll see.

I work nights btw evo. Thats why i was up.

EDIT:

OK i googled RPW and found a local shop that can do me 30m (yes 30 metres! sigh) of 0.031" capillary tubing. They also sell fresh POE oil. And R134a in 1Kg cans. So im gonna go shopping in a minute. Not sure how much the R134a is, bout 10-15 pound i think. £17 for oil, £18 for the cap tube. So looking at bout £45 for the lot and then just gotta stick it all together. I gotta get some skills, relying on my dad is getting tiresome
