I have noticed a lot of people are terrified of flashing from windows and think it is much more prone to failure. Are they just superstitious or is there objective evidence?

Dunno, imo it's easier for me because i grew up on Dos :p: , BIOS is a piece of cake, put it on a USB flash disk , go to bios click update done, no need to do it from windows and the VGA Card , I'd never update bios of a VGA if it's not running on the defalut Dos res [ paranoia ? ] , but Mouses and DVDroms , Windows :hehe:

Ever since I corrupted a BIOS in Windows I have used dos every time since. Never had an issue with dos flashing.

Yep, once you kill one you will know better. DOS only for me.

Both are prone to accidents, I flash from windows cause I don't want the trouble to connecting a floppy or making bootable cds and crap. Never had a problem with any of them. Started using windows to flash mobos for 3 years and haven't gone back. Anything else is done in dos.

i use windows but i always have spare blocks, or a space grafix card to redo the original flash in dos

I have flashed several times in Windows, first time got some problems (no experience).
But now that i know what the steps are, i find it easier to flash via windows, and have no more problems.

I only flash dual bios mobos from Windows. Single BIOS mobos should always be flashed either in DOS or with integrated BIOS flashing tool. Unless you want it dead...

usb drives make dos flashing simple and reliable. Floppy is hit and miss, there are no need for those drives at all anymore. cd is too much hassle.

Superstitious? No, they're just n00bs. Royalty n00bs IMO.

I've updated the BIOS of all my ASUS boards through Windows and have never had an issue and I've been doing this since the P4T days, that's an 850 chipset to you just in case you didn't k now.

Anyhow, with this P5B-Deluxe, I've done it 3 ways (Floppy, EZ-Flash & Windows), but more on Windows, with my P5WD2-Premium have always been
through Windows.

But, there's one thing for absolutely sure, I will not install BETA BIOS, never!

I dont know for sure if Im baseless but I fell safer doing it from DOS. I find DOS to be an more stable environment.

i've flashed the BIOS of a 4870 seven different times in Windows with no problems. besides, if you do get a problem, it probably has to do with the fact that you're using a home made program to flash it.

i've been flashing my motherboards in Windows for about a year now with no issues. outside of geek forums like this, flashing through Windows is the most common method to flash a BIOS. that's how the masses do it.

...i flashed from windows once, one time i couldnt downgrade to a prior bios from dos, and yet it worked from within windows

i still use a floppy and dos disk...but there may be no need:shrug:

when you only have dos loaded i reckon the chances of some windows glitch occurring reduces to zero.

I flash from windows if the motherboard doesnt have its own flashing utility built into the bios which can load the bios file from a usb stick.

Flashed HD3870, DFI Inf 965 and Blood Iron from Windows. No problem at all.

I have flashed numerous mobos from both DOS and windows. Never had a problem with either, so why not go the easier route that doesn't require digging up a floppy drive?

Some items do require using DOS to flash, usually due to the program needed to do it with.
