Hello,

I need to buy a new optical drive but most I like come in Sata. How does one know if a Sata drive will work on their system?

I have a GA-P35C-DS3R mobo and using Vista Ultimate. Here is the link of the drive I would like to buy
http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16827129032

Any help would be appreciated, thanks.

It works if you have a sata port.

Alright smarty pants! I have run across some info in the last few months when I was surfing about the silicon image and sata not working on some systems to beware.

I have this same drive running on the 6th port on my intel sata (ichr10). I have also tried it on the others prior to adding more drives so you shouldn't have any problems.

I think chances of incompatability are low SATA is a standard. It's lmost like saying certain IDE drives don't like certain motherboards. Where did you read said articles?

I just looked up when I bought my first SATA DVD-burner. It was Tuesday 23rd of May, 2006. Yes, that's over 2 years ago. Even then it worked flawlessly, even on XP64 which was bloated back then.

Oh yeah, I've been through like 5 or 6 now (different builds as well) and I have NEVER had any issues AT ALL. Like stated all above, it will work if you have a SATA port.

Guys, lets be specific. Certain ports wont work. For example on my old p5w dh dlx it had silicon image raid ports that didn't support it. On my New p45 it has "speeding HD" ports that also don't work. As long as the SATA he uses are IDE compatible like the ICHR10 and the Marvell or even Silicon image. But they cant be limited to a certain purpose.
