View Full Version : Scythe Orochi Review at Chillyreviews.com
Since day one Scythe's goal is performance in silence. They take this to the next level with the Scythe Orochi. In an attempt to make a super cooling passive heatsink Scythe has opted to overtake their opponents with pure power. The Scythe Orochi is one of, if not the most massive heatsinks you can buy today. The technology behind this cooler is the incredible 10 heatpipes and 38 fins. Get that heat up to those fins as quick as possible and remove it as efficiently as possible. So without further adeu, let's dig into the belly of the beast.

A real shame I had to step on, and ultimately break my high speed yate loon before testing. I'll try to get some updated temps with the high speed fan on there to show what the heatsink is really capable of. Please feel free to lend some constructive criticism :D

that thing is ridiculous

I thought it was supposed to mount over the ram slots? I know it has clearance for ram w/ normal heat sinks.

this is a little constructive criticism ;) A) you need a little bit more for comparison heatsinks, maybe some a little better known as top coolers to get some kind of median between the retail cooler and the best out there. B) research lightbox's and how to angle your lighting for clearer less yellow pictures, i still have trouble with this even with my shots because my box isnt built to spec. C) cut down on the useless pages, your intro page has like 4 lines on it, no reason to make a completely separate page for it ;)
hope that helps :)

Personally I thought that was a good review :), but like Spawne32 said u should have some more coolers to compare it to. I really looking forward to seeing what the temps are like with a/some high CFM fan/s.

Agreed with Spawne32, all you need is to compare other heatsinks with it. I like the "short and sweet" style though!
Also, you don't even really need a lightbox, use the bristol boards like the ones I mentioned in the PM, and also use photoshop to your advantage =)

I did a quick photoshop for you, it only took a minute or so.
Why should it be compared with Top Heatsinks when the Orochi was designed for nothing more than silence at stock settings to keep the temps below the thermal throttle without noise ?

that photoshop you did made the photo look over exposed.

I can tell you, I want to see this compared to a TRUE or something. I mean that by having at least one good 120mm fan on it. The same on both heat sinks really and to see which cools better at which fan speeds.
Not everyone wants silent and maybe it would be the TRUE at lower fan speeds (not 500 rpm, maybe 1250 or so).

that photoshop you did made the photo look over exposed.
I know, but it was a quick one to show how you can make the background completely white. I don't want to do the man's job :p:
Perfect, thanks for all your input guys. I'm glad it came in a helping manner rather than an angry manner.
I'll look into getting a TRUE or something if everyone feels that a comparison like that is necessary. The TRUE is in a completely different league than this monster though. If you've got one for sale, PM me.
And yes, it can be mounted over the ram slots, it can be mounted a couple different ways to suit your case and airflow.

that thing is huge...
I wonder why they oriented that way to cover a PCIE slot and not the other to cover the ram, at least the ram would get some air to cool it....

The fact that it gets beaten by a Zalman 9700NT makes it pretty laughable. If it cant beat that POS then noone will buy it.

Well it only had a 500rpm fan on it, i'm sure the zalman had a higher rpm fan then that.
Yeah, fatguy is right here.
The 9700nt has a pretty loud 2200rpm (I think its 2200) fan which pushes a fair amount of air. This is why I'm going to run some tests with the higher CFM fan as soon as it arrives here. I'll run some tests vs. a scythe ninja, and if anyone has a TRUE pm me
