View Full Version : Thermaltake Big Typhoon VP review [ER]

Every overclocker has heard of the Big Typhoon before, because it was one of the heatsinks that started the whole "high performance" cooling industry. The heatsink design has been proven to perform exceptionally well, and has remained relatively the same since the first revision. The original design had a backplate, then the VX version came out, which introduced a push-pin mounting system and a new fan. The current version is the VP [value pack], which also has the push-pin design, and a 120mm fan attachment to cool other components. The Big Tyhpoon has come a long way, but will it perform well enough to compete with other high performance air coolers? Let's take a look! [This heatsink is currently not available in America]. The new Big Typhoon performed pretty well, and I'm glad to see that Thermaltake is continuing tradition. Please feel free to comment on it. =)

With an e7200 @3.7Ghz 1.3350V its 7ºc hotter than an TRUE...With an quad and higher vcore the difference should be bigger. Not very good, seeing that there are many cheapo coolers with near TRUE performance nowadays.

If I was building my system a year ago, this would be my choice. Still a great cooler. I just love the intimidating look it has... I've always thought the Heat-Pipe + Fin design was a bit boring.

That's with the Big Typhoon at ~1300RPM, against the TRUE with a fan at ~2400RPM, but even so, I do agree that the difference shouldn't be that great.

Oops, sorry, didnt noticed that.

But the TRUE is used with an Thermaltake Thunderblade fan 2k RPM 78CFM FAN, not 2400 RPM, according to the specs.

Both using the same 2k RPM fan the difference is 4ºC. :)

Oh yeah, I'm using it for one of my rigs right now and it's still the best! 2k RPM is about good enough for this heatsink because when I slapped on a 2700RPM delta monster that was 38mm thick, it hardly performed any better. Probably because of the damn IHS, I guess?

this is the second product review of yours I've read and just like with the first one reading it takes me back to freshman year in high school. Your use of words, vocabulary, just screams novice writer. Not even writer. Sorry but your reviews just don't read like those of other, actual, writers. People with some kind of schooling in writing...

Sorry that my writing isn't up to par with your expectations. English isn't my strongest subject, but I still try my best to make my reviews legible. The classes I'm taking for Engineering don't require very much communication, so I'm really just used to numbers and formulas. Thanks for your input, I'll try a different approach with vocabulary in my next review.

Good review Noob-ftw.

I have plenty of schooling, except English is my weakest subject. Cheers to the science guys

Thanks for the positive comments!

This is Xtreme systems, not Xtreme vocabulary. Nice to see you "actual" writers start sentences with capitals to.

Noob-ftw- Nice review, still doesnt hold up well against the TRUE, but its not bad, especially as its easy to use and install, and looks pretty good if you have a window.
I'd still probably replace the fans for something without the orange though lol.

Wow, that's pretty impressive! Thanks for reading the review, I really appreciate everyone's support. I will be spitting out less reviews when Univseristy starts in September, but I'll still be around :)

Good review, but Thermaltake needs to stop re-releasing this exact same cooler in different packaging. We get it. You had a good heatsink. an HDT model with 8mm pipes, and a better fin design is in order... now it's just a matter of waiting on them.

And Thermalright too.

TT-BT didnt start the high performance heatsink industry, not by far.

Have to go back to the times of Globalwin and I forget the other company.. made a P2 cooler that used dual 60mm fans then later added a tec.

Grammar is ok btw ;)

Why the harsh criticism? Man, you suck, Dave_Sz. Just shut up and go back to reading those 1000-page books of yours if you are so into "intelligent" literature babble that obviously did not satisfy you. :shakes:

Anyways, I think the review was great. Written like an Engineer genius (except for the sentence that said the BT started the whole 'high performance' industry). The pictures and graphs were great, and I liked how all of it was on 1 page. For me, the pics/graphs are the most important things of a review as long as it covers all of the important stuff. However, I would've liked to see direct comparisons between the VP and VX.

Hmm, if there was one product that started the enthusiast heatsink industry, what do you think it would be? That's a really hard one for me--I cannot even think of a good one yet! The first heatpipe heatsinks from Thermalright (SP-94 and SP-97) were probably the most legendary ones, if not the XP-90c. The performance of those heatsinks were vastly superior to its competitors. Remember the Swiftech MCX-462? Thermalright Volcano 7+ or Volcano 9 with hard drive LED indicator back in 2001-2002 (heck, maybe Thermaltake started it all)? Zalman's CNPS6000 was also released shortly afterwards but just didn't take off as well. Well, it could be true that TT's BT is the best-selling high-end heatsink of all time...

New SI-128 SE seems to be better than even TRUE, but in the case only.

How has the thing "come a long way". It's the same cooler with a new marketing spin. It was great in it's day but, that has long passed. Today there are dozens of coolers that surpass this in performance and price. I really wish thermal take would come up with something better.

ULTIMATE FAIL. For someone who takes people to task about their style and mechanics so readily, you sure are a very mediocre writer, from the looks of it. I'd suggest you go read up on 'constructive criticism', in place of 'destructive trolling'.

I look over at my 2 TTBT (one backplate, other pushpins) trying to console them.

Just for kicks heres whats they both are doing... at 29C Ambient.
