well i decided to move to ddr3 not happy about it but i need the 790i ultra sli which only supports ddr3 and the 780i has alot of problems now i have my eye on some ram but i dnt know whether to get 4x1gb or 2x2gb ,which is faster wouldnt 4x1gb be because of the dual channel thanks

Yes, it's faster, but also more work for memory control with that many channels open, so it really depends on what you can get...and with 4GB Gskill PC9600 sticks seen "in the wild", does 5-10% matter?

Here's a very good article for you to read. Their conclusion..2x2GB sticks is best all-around configuration.

I think it more depends on motherboard. Ask about it in respective thread and you'll probably get the answer.

right now there is no point in 2x1GB kits the 2x2GB uses a double sided jnl (or one of its derivatives) when the 1GB sticks are the same but single sided, u just need a 2x2GB with 1600mhz and low timings like the mushkin black kit or the gskill HZ, and make sure that they are rated for 1.9V or more

Is it even possible to get 1x 4GB stick (either DDR2 or DDR3)? I haven't seen anything bigger than 2GB...

gskill, wintech, mushkina nd some othrs have 8GB in 2x4GB kits out in ddr2 its like 667mhz cas5, but i dont think that ddr3 has that

667MHz only? Thats crap... I'm asking because i can't overclock memory beyond 800MHz because i have all 4 slots filled and PC just fails to boot when i do that. Voltage doesn't help at all. 2 sticks of 4GB 800MHz memory would be cool...

My strong recommendation would be to go 2*2GB. Much less stress on the NB, and therefore higher clocks. Additionally, unlike DDR2, AFAIK current DDR3 sticks are either double-sided or single-sided using the same density chips, rather than lower capacity sticks using double-sided of lower density chips, meaning that there's no speed penalty to be seen from having to use these denser but slower chips.

u should get a legit 8GB with 1066mhz gskill and u will be fine, i think that u have mixed ICs since u cant get past 800mhz and have 6GB

thanks for yours guys help and by what i can see 2x2gb is the way to go one more thing is there any decent ram that clocks at 1600mhz and has low latency say 55512 thats probly unrealistic but what the heck :)

I don't know of any PC3-12800 parts with a latency lower than 7-7-7-20. For those, try Corsair, G.Skill and I believe Mushkin.

yeah, nothing rated lower than 7-7-6 for PC3-12800 thus far and that is plenty tight for that fewuency. i can personally vouch for the Mushkin Ascent PC3-12800 2x2GB kit loving the 790i reference board. i tested them on the EVGA 790i and clocks were un-real with CL6 and CL8...CL7 is a different story as my board seems to just hate CL7 with any memory for full stability at mush past 900MHz, but that is still quite acceptable.
i should have some of the OC Report on the Mushkin posted in my EVGA 790i OC Report listed in my signature by the end of today. CL6 screams and CL8 hit 1000MHz relatively easily with full stability coming in around 990MHz @ 8-8-8. HTH

That would be the OCZ kit? Never had much luck with OCZ myself
not sure which 2x2GB kits are all rated for 7-7-6-18 @ PC3-12800 but i know the Mushkin Ascents are rated for that and allow voltage up to 1.95v.

didn't the Jedc just set the voltage lower for to 1.35V for 1600mhz?

for our purposes lower voltage is bad, lower voltage means higher timings, that jdec low voltage will most likely use cas 10 or something ridiculous, and micron is the only ones that i know of that take over 1.8xV so the 1.9V are generally good
and most company warranty ocing but not abuse and abuse is generally considered overvolting and or not cooling

good pointing that out lol why in the world would you lower the voltage lol
