Hey guys, I'm new here. While researching different graphics cards, google brought me to these forums. I have already learned a lot just from reading miscellaneous posts here .

I know a lot about computers, but when it comes to hardware I am sometimes confused. I'm looking to build myself a gaming rig for next year in college (going to be a freshman, yay). I'd appreciate it if someone could look over it and correct me if there are any better deals, or anything that isnt compatible. Also, I know nothing at all about motherboards so if someone could help me out in regards to finding one (and knowing what to look for in one for that matter), it would be great.

Budget $1800 or so.

Power Supply- http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16817139005 or http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16817139002

Graphics Card- http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16814121258
RAM- http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16820146785

I already have a mouse, keyboard, and speakers.

Well, how's it look? I am mostly looking for help with the motherboard, graphics card, and case+power supply (I really have no idea about how large either of these should be, just found good deals). It should also be noted that I can wait till the beginning of september to order everything, in case anything new will be released soon that I am not aware of, or if there will be price drops in the near future. I have a friend who has built several computers himself, so he will be helping me with that part. I hope to stay and learn from this community as long as possible! Thanks!

Another note: I don't think I will be buying all parts from newegg, just using it to list them.

:welcome:

This is the mobo I have, and it is serving me well. http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16813131196
I have a Q6600 at 3 gigs with the stock cooler.
I would get a different hard drive. You can get a seagate 500 gig with 32 mb cache for $100.
I would wait a long time the get the gt280 or get the ATI 4870. It just isn't worth it to spend the extra money on the 280 right now.

o.O good catch on the hard drive, and thanks for the mobo suggestion =). It seems like it's always a waiting game for graphics cards doesn't it?

edit: nice av LOL

The 1 good thing about that video card is it folds like crazy.
The bad, it is over priced and it isn't that much better then the much cheaper 4870.

Buy a cheap EEEPC and spend the rest at your local Hooters. :ROTF:

But if you really want to go down this path...
For a HDD get a Samsung F1.
For a CPU get a Q6600. As one guy's signature here says: You can overclock a Q6600, but you can't overcore a Wolfdale. ;)
For a PSU you can get a cheaper Antec or Corsair @ 650W and it'll be enough.
Vid card.... might want to check out ATI's offers too. 2x 4850 or the upcoming 4870X2 would be better choices.

well, if its a gaming rig.. The E8400 overclocked would actually be better, my E8400 runs laps around my my QX6700 in games like.. Crysis.

edit: Nice choice on the mushkin

Haha naw I dont need to spend money on women to get them.

Thx for the replies though guys. I know you both suggested different processors, but I seriously know nothing about overclocking (which is potentially dangerous?). Would overclocking the processor make it more likely to die on me in the future? I know hardware gets better quite frequently, but I plan on having this cpu for a good chunk of years.

thanks again

Think the r700 will drop the price of the gtx 280?

I believe the r700 are already out?

btw what the heck is "overcore" lol

If you want cheapness go for Q6600 or wait for the price drop and get a Q9550

Q9450 for mild OC [ see my Sig ] , 8400 Wolfdale for HC OC

R770 aka Radeon 4870
for single Radeon Asus P5Q Deluxe
for CF Asus Rampage Formula

And for the PSU het Corsair 620HX it's better , Seasonics Quality, if not then Tagan

Go for the Asus P5Q-E if you are going for an Intel motherboard around ~$150.

What he said.
The rest looks ok. 4870 instead of 280. Spend the $$ on the beer/condom... trust me you will need it.

http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16822136218
this hardrive use 320gb platters much better then 250gb platters. i got the 320gb version and i get around 95-105mb/s read. Samsung also has 640gb but i don't think there are any in U.S.

I didn't understand the first sentence = / (yes im noob). The rampage is way too expensive at $300. What would be the advantages of the PSU you mentioned compared to http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16817139005 ?

Thx for the mobo suggestions guys =D, updated it.

Also, just as a note: I can honestly say I know nothing at all about overclocking so maybe it is best for me to stick with the E8500. I don't want to buy a slower one and then go burn it up anyway.

the HX series is made by seasonics , top notch quality thats why HX620 is better than the 650one, that's made just by corsair.

In the first sentence i said if you want more than gaming, an overall crunching PC, DVD Recompress , Photoshop, basicly CPU Eating things go for the Quad 9450 or 9550, if you're just for the gaming for now 8400 / 8500 Dualcores are allright

I've read up a lot on those quads and it seems like the duo is better for me (and cheaper). I'll see about the PSU, depends on what the final cost of this thing turns out to be.

Last thing I need help with: the monitor. Should the one I have selected work fine for games at with its price? Should I go cheaper? More expensive? It is probably the one piece of hardware I know the least about. = /

Hella thanks to you guys for the replies. This forum rocks
