View Full Version : My OC with P5Q-E AND Q9450 3.9GHZ STABLE
alright upgraded to asus p5q-e and slapped in my q9450 and I was pretty surprised with the OC results. I chip as a vid of 1.2375 but it overclocks like a monster, idle temps seem to be jacked up a little because my first core runs 13c higher than others but under load the differnce between highest core and the lowest core is 7c, my idle temps reported by realtemp are 41-29-32-32
and load temps are included in the screenshot, I have benched it stable at 3.8 with prime 95 running for 8 hours and than I stopped it, It required 1.2575v under load to be stable at 3.8, which is pretty good after seeing the most OC's on the net.
I bumped the core to 1.3375v in bios I believe, lol. with the voltage dampner enabled or whatever it is called It stays at 1.325v under load, it idles at 1.304v, so it boosts it a little under load. I will fine tune that later but for now here is a screen, so far almost an hour in. I really don't want to go any higher on the voltage, I try to keep my temps in the 60's the highest. I will try to squeeze the best megahertz with this voltage, any higher might require water cooling.

Killer results man!
Yea I was actually surprised at the voltage it required compared to my e8400 which required almost 1.4v loaded to run at 4.0ghz, and the temps were pretty close too, it is pretty amazing how refined the manufacturing process is specially on quads compared to dual cores.

Pity your Prime 95 run only shows 40 minutes, otherwise I might believe your 8 hours stability. ;)
Well done, nice work  have you tried a few games see if they are stable too? Also have you checked the voltages in windows? you might be able to manually reduce the voltages, not sure if the P5Q-E over volts but I read the Deluxe does.

Looking good!!
Can you post your P5Q-E BIOS settings please??
My E8400 isn't that good overclocker I think, but I'm still on boxed-cooler, and when running Prime95, it gets up to 70°C+, so I gotta put my watercooler on it temporarily...^^

Great results! Would you mind telling us a bit about your BIOS settings?
Thanks
shoot I have not checked this thread for a while, lol. but here is the thing I just found out about the board, teh whole time I was testing with small fft's and it was stable because I was just torturing the cpu, but my overall oc is not stable because this baord started giving me blue screens. the reason is that if I run small ffts it can pass for a day, but as soon as I run blend it started crashing, I realized this after I started getting blu screens in games, so far I dont know why my baord is having nightmare getting the memory stable, I am running the memory at 5-5-5-18, and still no stability, I am trying to fix it now as we speak, the memory passes memtest, cpu is stable at those clocks but blend crashes, I have crucial ballistix pc2-8500, I dont know if my baord does not like this memory or what, this memory wont even run at 4-4-4-12 at 900 on this board though it passes mem test.
I updated to the latest bios 1003, and right now I am running the memory at 1066 with 3.4ghz and it seems to be running stable at 5-5-5-18 with blend test, I think that it might be fsb/mem devider issue, 1:1 doesn't seem to be stable at high clocks, but I will further test with this bios, as it seems to be running the best stability wise.

Yeah looks and sounds like the standard QUAD Core FSB wall , anything above 450mhz fsb requires the user to go to counselling and could result in grey hairs. This is still a good result non the less.

How Great OC'ing.
I really would like that voltage settings, it seems that my q9450 its much more hungry:shakes: for volts
this is what happens, I can pass small fft's for hours at 3.9, but the damn board wont even pass blend at 3.6 for more than 30 mins, I really love my cpu as it never crashes when just stress the cpu at 3.9, but blend takes a crap, my memory passes memtest all the way through at 1066mhz, so I have no idea why this board is hating on me, hell I cant even set the memory to 4-4-4-12 at 900mhz, that is just plain sad, lol.
well bios settings are all on auto except for cpu at 1.33125, I have tried adjusting the voltages of northbridge to get my memory stable but, it is not happening, I know my cpu is a great overclocker but this board is not letting me get the memory stable.

Uh, quick question - If your memory isn't perfectly stable, can that cause errors in the large FFT p95 test? It says it uses a bit of ram and I'd be curious if it does. Could you try running some large FFTs and tell me if they're stable? Because I'm also trying to OC a Q9450 that seems to be stableish on small FFTs, but the large ones fail in less than an hour. Wondering if it's my memory now...
Oh, and you might want to try changing the vDIMM, I hope you aren't leaving that on auto! My system won't even post like that.
lol, now I am running small fft's again at 3.9 and it has not failed for an hour, if I run blend it will restart after about 30min, I thought it is suppose to be the other way around, lol. I am going to try at 3.4 with different mem divider and see if that helps.

Thats an awesome quote.

I have hit a wall. I tried all voltages, but nothing works. Should I get a new mother?

I just got this mobo, I'll be testing soon.
no the baord is certainly not stable with 1:1 ratio, yes the cpu is rock stable but the memory controller becomes really unstable at those speeds, heck it wont even boot my memory at 4-4-4-12 with a mild overclock, cpu passes small fft's at 489x8, I dont think this board has a FSB fall issue, it is the memory controller that is not stable at high fsb and memory clock with 1:1 ratio, I can only get it stable with memory at 1081mhz and front side bus at 453, with the third ratio selected in bios, it wont run 1:1 even with memory timings at 5-5-5-18, which is plain sad, it just restarts after about half an hour of blend test, though passes the cpu small fft's. I actually would have returned this baord if it was with in 15 days, but I never tested blend test I always tested small fft's for hours and thought it was stable, lol.
It wasn't until I discovered blu screens in games and I think I am gonna have to get 1200mhz memory to get it stable at high fsb since it looses mem stability at 1:1 ratio, which I am certainly disappointed in. Northbridge voltage did not matter, even gave it 1.5 but did not matter.

I've never seen high VID chips OC so well. My Q9450 has the highest VID possible, 1.2500v... I'll see how far I can get :(.

Nice OC there man, surprising that such a high VID chip would OC so well :).
---------------------------
Mine is a :banana::banana::banana::banana:ing joke... It won't even stablize at 3.6GHz w/
1.38v LOAD
1.54v PLL
1.36v VTT
1.32v NB
450x8
I regret spending all that time cleaning my HSF for this.

My Q9450 has a vid of 1.2500 and it's 8 hours both Prime95 blend and large FFTS stable and game stable @ 3.6GHz (8x450) on P5Q-D with 1.28125 vcore set in bios = 1.264v real with LLC enabled. Also running 8gb of Corsair pc8500 1:1 @ 900mhz
CPU GTL (0/2) - .630
CPU GTL (1/3) - .630
CPU PLL -1.52
FSB TERM V - 1.28
NB V -1.26
NB GTL - .630
LLC - enabled
Over 450fsb though things start getting touchy and to run 3.8Ghz with a 375fsb requires pumping up the volts considerably which is something I don't want atm for 24/7 use.

Weird... I wonder if it has much to do with my GTL Refs... I had them on stock when attempting 3.6GHz... .630 and .670
Nice voltage though, only 1.28125.

Nice clocks and FSB , especially on a quad!
This seems to similar to my situation. I have a P5Q-Deluxe, and it also doesn't like clocking my ram over 1150MHz CAS5 and it refuses to do 1200 MHz CAS5 no matter what. Also I have to give it 1.20v vNB & 2.06v (bios) 2.14v (real) vdimm to get 1000 MHz CAS4. It should go higher without issues on CAS5 but no.
The P5Q series seems to have major problems with ram overclocking. I'm still testing to find a stable ram frequency that allows my cpu to be at 4GHz.
My old P5B vanilla (P965) clocked ram better than this 'deluxe' board. It's really annoying and I expected so much more than this from a new ASUS board, especially bearing the 'deluxe' badge. Seems the P5Q-E suffers the same problems.

wut da hayel...
I just upped my NB voltage a little, and suddenly 3.6GHz is priming at 1.368v CPU without incident.
Have you tryied 1:1 strap333?
FSB Strap to North Bridge: 333

yea man I tried everything, but this thing does not want to run at tight timings, and with high front side bus and 1:1 ratio, Passes small fft's at 3.9 without any hickup, I actually was really impressed with cpu overclock but memory stability is just crap, I Honestly think that these boards might be meant better for ddr3 than ddr2.
My abit ip-35 pro would scream with tight timings with the same ram and high FSB in one one ratio, that board was a dream man, I just wanted to get the pci-e 2.0 and upgrade to p45 because I usually change my board every 8-9 months or so, and this time it might be sooner, lol.
I have bumped my northbridge voltage and tried all the settings the board just wont pass blend for more than half an hour with 1:1 ratio and the other ratio that I am using does not allow me to raise the fsb to much because my memory can only do 1080 stable and I run out of memory overhead.
Pity your Prime 95 run only shows 40 minutes, otherwise I might believe your 8 hours stability. ;)
Well done, nice work  have you tried a few games see if they are stable too? Also have you checked the voltages in windows? you might be able to manually reduce the voltages, not sure if the P5Q-E over volts but I read the Deluxe does.
actually I got pics with screenshots of it running longer, but I am having memory instability with that speed as I have said the small fft's pass, but I have severe issues with 1:1 memory ratio, I have to run memory in other ratio to get it blend stable, to run at high fsb I have to run my memory at 2:3 ratio because I have ballitix pc2-8500, and at that high fsb the memory goes above 1100 in any other ratio than 1:1 and where it is not even stable at 3.2.

Man either that board is a killer or my quad is a disaster.
I am at 8x440 but with 1.30625vcore(1.328 in load),1.32v vtt(1.311 measured) and 1.555 nbcore voltage.
I tried the maximum safe voltages for 3.6(1.375vcore and 1.38vtt) but it gets into windows and then freezes.
NKD please try to make it Prime95 blend stable, small ffts isnt that conclusive when testing stability.

small ffts tests cpu stability, and blend tests both, but if you are testing an overclock, i would go with small ffts first.

Yeah but for high fsbs you better choose blend over small ffts.

Did you guys try backing off the CPU multiplier and checking max FSB from there?

My setup is not so relevant but I do have a Q9450 and am interested in going faster, probably with a P45 board:
