View Full Version : Strange restart/boot-behavior on Asus P5Q-E

Hi guys!!
I haven't found any real P5Q-E/P5Q Pro-thread, so I'll have to ask here:
I have an E8400 on my new P5Q-E, it works fine so far, I'm still testing the maximum of the board (all those GTL settings are taking a lot of time to test), but I have a big problem:
Whenever I'm in windows and do some stability testing, and then want to restart, the board switches off, and then on again, but it won't POST then, I'll have to switch off the PSU, then do a cold start again, but the board loads the default settings, so I have to enter the BIOS and load the profile again!!If I save the settings, the board reboots with the new (overclocked) settings, and everything else is fine again...
Anyone else got that problem? I tried BIOS 0704 and 0803, same problem on both BIOSes...
Thanks for any input!!

Probably an incorrect settings somewhere that doesn't allow it to post properly...some user experience probs with some Hd's... Can you fill in the template plz :

OK, filled in the form, the only thing I don't remeber is the "PCIE SATA Voltage", but I manually set it to the lowest (default) value...

I have a WD740ADFD-raptor and a Maxtor 250GB on there...maybe it's the WD-HDD? I heard of some users having problems, but I can boot into windows just fine...should I try with the Maxtor drive only?

K I don't see the point in 550FSB with a 6 multi... what's the point in that ? FSB term voltage is way too low for those FSB speeds...
List ya other hardware here plz... which rams have you got ?

The point is to find max FSB for that board and to tweak the memory, I haven't tested my CPU for high clocks, so I used the multi of 6...
I will try a higher FSB term voltage later, I just read on a german forum that it could be the "6-engine"-thing??
I got 2x2GB Corsair XMS2 Dominator PC-8500 Rev1.1 in there!!
PSU is an Enermax Liberty 500W, Powercolor Radeon HD4850, P-ATA DVD-drive, 1x WD Raptor 74ADFD, 1x Maxtor 250GB S-ATA...that's it...^^

To find max FSB i don't use 2gb dimms as a) they mostly don't go over 1130mhz b) require more voltage that's good for them...
What's ya goal here for max Speed daily ? 4ghz run 500FSB then and don't waste ya time on max FSB... also for 2gb dimms we set TRFC to a looser value of 55 or higher when pushing the dimms... your settings are really getting way off track if you try them like these, these board love auto on some settings and setting a fixed value will surely hinder ya testing procedures...things that worked on previous boards mostly doesn't work on these... skews are very important if you want more out of this P45 chipset...
Secondly if you want an OC don't use things like EPU or 6engine it always has been like this, either you go for max performance or you opt for a green pc...I had 6engine installed as software but it doesn't work as it says I'm running overclocked mode so I deinstalled it...

My goal will be >4GHz daily!! I'm on water (once my case is finished...), so "just" 4GHz would be very disappointing...
So, I will either have to run it at 8x5xx, or use the max. 9x multi on that one...that would give me a max. of 500MHz FSB...
BUT: the rebooting-problem allready occured on <450MHz-FSB-settings!!!!
I don't have that 6-engine-thing running at all, I have disabled all the "fancy" drive stuff in BIOS, and yeah, I don't really need those energy-saving things, I work for an energy-supplying company here in germany, I get the electricity for free...:-D
I think I gotta loosen those Trfc manually, yeah...
so, what do you suggest for e.g. 500MHz FSB?? (That will be the max. I'll use then, if the CPU does 4500MHz... :-D )
Which settings to leave on "Auto"?? And which not?
But thanks for all your help so far!!

4.5ghz even on water is too much for daily use as you will have to use a vcore (underlaod ) of over 1.45 (even ig you have good cpu) eg my E8400 does 4ghz (8 x 500) at 1.22 Vcore (loaded) I need 1.31Vcore for 4.25Ghz stability.... 4.5Ghz requires me to push 1.43... so for that 500mhz more I need to up the vore 0.21... doesn't scale pretty well sadly... 4-4.2 is realistic with a good CPU... 4.5 is not at all
Here are my settings for 500FSB ops with ram at 1002Mhz with that lovely E8400 :

Yeah, 4.5 is very optimistic, but 4.25 or whatever would be OKish I think!!
I will try your settings and start from there to find "my" stable settings...
BTW, what's the thing to set PCIe to 101?? I did that on my former AB9 QuadGT as well, it didn't help my overclock/stability at all...LOL...
But thank you so much for all your help!! I hope I can find some stable settings finally!! :-D

I have been using since the ages... I always set it at 101... can you test for me the max PCI-e it will boot... with the 8800GTX I can get up to 110mhz, with GTX280 only 105Mhz, would love to see some nr on the ATI's...
If you have a good CPU 4.25 will be doable but stay below 1.4Vcore under load plz just for the sake of ya CPU...

Yeah, I won't get any higher than 1.4V on the core, I want that thing to last a bit longer than just a few months...
Even though, my "old" E6400 did 3600MHz 24/7, which was quite a lot, but it needed a rather high voltage, too, but I never had any trouble in the ~20 months I used it... :-D
I will try the max PCI-e, no problem...:-)

105 for 2900pro/xt any more its no post :(
i can do 120 on every other board so im praying to god its just a bios issue.
i have also experienced the no boot issue w/ p5q-e. I have not experienced the same problem with 0901 bios however so you might want to give that a try.

Hi Zeneffect!
Well, I tested it with Leeghofd's settings yesterday, and I think that "bug" is gone!! It wasn't really stable, so I have to tweak it a lot more, but at least that "reboot"-thing was gone...but maybe I'll try that 0901 BIOS, too...
Which one do you use, Leeghofd? Or aren't you using the P5Q-E??

Nope mate on Dlx but there will be a new bios soon as 1001 is in test, an apha version for the Dlx has been leaked already on hardwareluxx... but there are some things that I think pmp will rewrite before it hits beta...

I saw that 1001 alpha, but I won't flash that now, better wait for it to be final - not want to loose my warranty... :-)

Sorry man, I totally forgot to test max PCIe, I was way too busy finding some stable settings for 9x445 (4005 MHz), but I haven't had any luck so far...I bet it's because of the box cooler not beeing good enough, I get to 75/74°C under "Realtemp", that's way too much I think...Vcore was like 1.35V in CPU-Z...I will put on my watercooler temp. today, so I can check for "real" results!! :d

thats the beauty of the dual bios. if your bios gets borked, it automatically reverts back to the factory bios from the image on the 2nd chip. :)

Well, that's true, so any advantages with that beta BIOS?
And yesterday I finally got my E8400 @9x445 stable on box-cooler!! :D
But tomorrow I will mount my watercooling on it, if it does 4005MHz on box-cooler, I hope I can get it to 4200 on water!! :)
And thanks a lot for all your help guys!!
