View Full Version : AS5 in CPU socket...

The last time I changed CPUs, I noticed a small dab of AS5 got into the pin area of the board... I eventually cleaned it out with a magnifying glass and one of the legs of a 5mm LED (I know ghetto), until I could not see any remaining AS5 with the magnifying glass... I'm too scared to go over it again with a toothbrush because I'm scared of bending pins...
I'm typing this post up on that rig right now... But I'm worried about possible long term corrosion or stuff like that.

did you use anything else to clean it? besides the toothbrush. it should be fine.

I don't believe AS5 is conductive. It uses silver but the silver content is so low that it shouldn't be conductive.

I crudely used the legs on an old LED since they were thin enough.

Anyone recommend any methods to be sure? Visually I can't see any of the past left.

Dishwasher with NO SOAP
Take the battery out first"be sure to do that"
Then let it sit in the window for a week and dry out.

Don't know if that'd work actually, thermal paste is rather thick gunk. All the stickers on the board will fall off also unless you coat them with tape(which might pull it off anyway) or lacquer. I personally tape them over, haven't pulled too many off that way. You can then bake the board in the oven, I've baked more than a baker's dozen at 180F in my oven

Get yourself some Elctrosolve. You can get it at microcenter, or from any good electronics store.

I don't understand, it really should not be a problem as long as the Arctic Silver 5 is not bridging two pins together. If you're really worried you could try the dishwasher, but I don't know if I'd be man enough to put my motherboard in a dishwasher. :p:

Arctic Silver 5 is not conductive, but it is slightly capacitive, so it can build up some electricity and discharge. They may as well call it conductive.

I have washed it off that way before. I did take more than one wash to get it to come off.

I'm going to be taking the mobo out of the case either today or tommorow, to install a retention bracket and my S183, so I can do some cleaning then.
I found a pretty soft toothbrush, so I'm thinking of using that. I'm also tempted to use my Articlean, but I'm worried that it could damage the pins... (It's a solvent).
As I said before, the rig is running fine, and I visually can't see any more paste.

Anyone know of cleaners that would be safe in a CPU socket? I have some Articlean and some 70% Isopropyl ...... I guess I could just leave it the way it is since my comp is running fine.

Would the arctic clean not work? Just let the stage 1 sit for 30 seconds and then turn it over?

I'm worried about it damaging the socket... I think I'll try the alcohol tmr.

if you are worried about that and you are using only 70% isopropyl i don't think it's going to make much difference. you can get 95-97 from a pharmacy for like $3.
