Hey guys,

What do you think about this card for folding? Newegg link (http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16814125089)

Just over $100 with shipping, then a $30 rebate. I'm not a big fan of rebates, but this seems like a pretty good deal. I'd like to have a 4870, but I'm thinking of getting this for now and wait until the gpu2 client matures.

Everyone's been talking about buying that card.

You can also look into and 8800gs. I believe they get about the same ppd (around 5k) and are around the same price.

I am still considering the card you mentioned. I'm having an ongoing discussion w/ Marvin the Martian about what card to get (ATI or nvidia) and no one knows which will have the best PPD in the end. I am considering either picking up two of those cards (both the gt and gs) or getting a 9800gx2 and retiring my current card. I don't know if you game, but if you haven't checked out the news section today, DX11 might come out in 09. It might be a better idea to get a low end card and wait for those (always waiting), but I can't say for sure.

I don't like MIR either, but it is a great deal.

Yup I picked one of those up and it's happily folding away. Great buy IMO.

I'll say I've been tempted to snatch that up to put in fold6, even though it is faster than my X1950XT in my main rig I don't think the 256MB would do too hot for some games I play. Downside is I think I'd need a different PSU (20A max on the 12V on fold6's PSU) and that just raises the cost even more, and school bills are coming up, and I want a 4870 for my main rig.... :/

This wouldn't be for gaming, just for my dedicated folder. It would be paired with a Q6600.

Thanks for the reponse, I'm going to order it tonight :D

The egg is sold out!
But for you GPU experts, which bells/whistles have the biggest impact for better folding?
That is, given a selected processor (say G92), is it SPs? More memory? Memory speed?

^ Oh cool you can run two SMP clients and the GPU client :) I thought the GPU client needed a core to itself?

in xp it does, not in vista.. (nvidia)

ati needs a core regardless..

I wish I would have seen that when they were still in stock. I am thinking of putting together some 630i rigs with 8800s or some 8200 rigs with 8800s with quads just for folding and stack them in the corner. Might require some rewiring for the power in the house! LOL! I will need me some cheap cards. How many ppd are 8800GSes?
