Wow, I installed Vista for the first time on my computer and finally got around to running Aquamark 3 and Lightsmark and have probably taken a 30 percent hit in perfromance. What am I missing. As fare as I can tell I stop everything running that I did in XP, same components and same overclock. What gives? thanks
I am still running 2 gigs of RAM, but have two more coming tomorrow, but surely that can't be it.

grab another 2 gigs of ram and install sp1, also theres a program called tweakvi that allows you to take off a good amount of stuff that runs in the background.

Type "Services" in your start search bar and disable Superfetch and Readyboost, it helps.

thanks, I have sp1 installed and Ram comes tomorrow I will give the others a try as well.
But still you won't get the same XP performance with the tweaks

So it seems but it also appears that some don't seem to get quite the hit with vista and performance that others do. Do we just have to live with lesser performance and try and overclock more?

Just another reason why I've always stayed clear of benchmarking tools. If games play smoothly, meaning no visual hitching that I can perceive, I'm good. With this in mind, as far as XP v. Vista performance, once drivers and support apps caught up with Vista I haven't had any problems.

So far the little gaming I have done has shown things to be fine but unless
the benchmarks aren't caught up with Vista yet, they are way behind XP's
performance for sure

Sounds like a possiblity too. Also, I haven't turned off or fiddled with any services in Vista, except to turn UAC off. I would avoid doing so unless you are having a REAL problem, and only if you know the ramifications.

Why?

Why? You bolded what I said but you don't seem to understand what I meant.
You recommend to avoid configuring services to the needs and stick with defaults instead. Did I get something wrong?
If you do such recommendations, you should have a reason and this is what I ask for.

you should have made the bolded part longer, it also stated "only if you know the ramifications" .
meaning:
Don't go fiddling with your OS unless you know what your doing, then breack it and come cry here.

yeah vista services are weird... ive disabled many xp services and have not had any problems, but disabling vista services seems to have some random effects on some things (ie cannot access control panel)

Statements aren't always going to conform to what you think they should be. This pretty much says it all:
"I would avoid doing so (killing services) unless you are having a REAL problem, and only if you know the ramifications."
You didn't consider the entire statement, and simply asking "why" seemed more provacative than questioning.
