Apple sticks it to you when you purchase an Xserve that is not complete, meaning if you do not load up the unit with drives you do not get the ADB (Apple Drive Bay) or when you purchase one with a single CPU and upgrade it to your own you do not get the Apple heat sink.

Why is this important?

Because Apple charges a premium for the ADB with a drive installed, you cannot get a bare ADB through apple, only Ebay.

When you install a second CPU without an Apple supplied heatsink the blower fans will run at 20K rpm and not drop down.

I asked Apple to add these options on the buy page or at least state that the machine excludes the needed parts to complete an upgrade later. Apple shipped out my second heatsink overnight.

If you ran across this page searching for more info and the website is still not updated, call Apple and complain. File a repair ticket for defective heatsink or ABD for the parts you need, Apple with honor the claim.

I kind of like apple support. It may not be that great, but if you keep complaining and call them idiots..

They'll give in, you just have to be right and persistent. :)

I once got yelled at by Apple enployees at the Apple Store for bringing in a XServe with a bad sisterboard for the drive controller.

I brought into the store during prime hours, and laid it in front of the Genius Bar and stated its broke, and I got taken in the back. They asked me why I brought an XServe to the store, I stated because Corp Tech told me too. And was told it makes the Apple image bad when a High Grade Server gets brought in broken in front of alot of customers.

Agreed...

Really stupid they dont include the drive bay for all the possible drives the unit can support. But i fully understand why they dont have a second CPU heatsink, why would they? You purchased a single CPU model.

If you call and complain and dont sound like a idiot, you can usually get what you want without even paying for it. Especially when you are dealing with mac pro's or xserve's. Just buy applecare on any apple product, and you have 3 years of problem free operation.

I dont really like apple that much, but i do own a suprising amount of apple products, and like most of them.

LOL! WHAT!?!?!

Whenever im in there with my broken apple products, wich has always been my MBP, i see dozens of people with 'problems' there. Usually its just the end user who cant use software, but sometimes it has been a ipod hardware failure. Strange the ipods allways have big dents in them when theyre broken... But they still replace them on the spot.

But if you cant take a broken server in to the apple store, what do you do with it?

I think this is common. I have Poweredges at work that support dual CPUs but are configured with only one CPU, and they didn't include a spare heatsink, and I don't think a spare was an option. Same goes for the empty drive bays. I'm not sure about the availability of these, but I imagine that my Dell account rep could get them to me for cheap or free.

my immediate and INSTANT answer to that would "and how the f@$(& is that my problem"

and then ask them for their district managers phone number, or call Apple corporate with any number you can find and file a complaint.

then tell them that they just bought themselves a one way ticket to the unemployment line, grab your Xserve and walk out the door...

that is absolutely unacceptable. any human being in their right mind would see you bring that in an understand things break,, it happens.

they were just pi$$ed that they had 500 customers with broken iphones and ipods already waiting in line...

i have had store fronts gimmie that kind of b.s. before with lesser things.. and believe me there is no reason in the world why anyone, anywhere should scold a customer like that.

to Fugger -

isn't that tradition w/ apple to do things like that ? not give you what is needed or make you pay extra, and not tell you about it. ? or am i just seeing the bad things an not the good ?

Fact is heatsinks should be sold seperately and now they will (well, maybe..) be.
