I have installed vista on a few new computers with only one hard drive with no problem. Finally I decide to put it on my computer which happens to have two HD with the second being just for storage. Everything goes fine until I try and boot for the first time from my hard drive, then I get this message.

Do I need to disconnect my storage drive when I install or what. I have seen that this is an issue with vista. Is there a way to fix this without having to install for the third time? thanks.

EasyBCD for all your Vista boot needs.

plug both HDDS in. Boot from the vista DVD and do the fix startup issues option. That should sort the problem.

Try running a repair first, here's how.

Boot from the installation disk and hit next after selecting your language, time, and keyboard.

On the next page select "Repair your computer" at the bottom instead of "Install Now"

At this point it will scan your disks to find your windows installation, once it does, select the installation you want to repair and hit next and follow the instructions.

Have you changed any of your hard drives around since you installed Vista? because that make a difference, especially if the storage disk was first in order.

The repair option did nothing until I unplugged my extra drive that vista had written the boot mgr to! After I did this and I switched my sata connections just for the fun of it and after trying repair another time or two it finally worked. Then I was able to reconnect the extra HD and all seems to be well. I would love to know why vista writes its boot files on another drive than the operating system is on. thanks

It depends on which disk was first in order, it sounds like your storage disk was hooked up as disk 0 and your os disk as disk 1.

that I am not sure about since the storage disk was pata and the main disk is sata

On another front, can you disable windows defender and is there anything else taking up a lot of resources that can be removed? thanks

yes you can disable windows defender through the options for defender in control panel, its kinda of buried but its there. Then set it to disabled in services for good measure.

lol I just went throughthis exact issue tonight after I treid to reformat my storage disk (which happens to be on port 0). Yep it's that last touch of old school that the OS assumes it's going on the first disk it sees...

I think I have these issues solved. Right now I am trying to figure out how to watch netflix movies on my computer with my DVI and not my Dsub. MS acknowledges that when you install vista it will sometimes not allow you to view some digital material and has a "fix" that didn't help me. So I am going to try and contact them and see if there is something else I can do. One of the things they say to do is download and view some other material you have subscribed to and vista willl reset itself. But Netflix is the only thing I am subscribed to I think. thanks for the help

LOL I just fixed mine like 1hr ago. I just installed my X48 DFI and I only connected my 2 raid drives 1st to install vista, then I shutdown and connected my 2 storage drives. I got the msg but I went into the BIOS and found the boot order the RAID array was last and it was hanging trying to boot from my storage drives lol. I just changed order and voila
