ATI HD4870 beats GTX 280 in almost every turn.
and remember the GTX 280 is ~$600 and the HD4870 is ~$299.
Look at the benches and say what is better in value and performance?

In one GTX 280 price you can buy two HD4870:rofl:
So be ready for CFX or just CF :ROTF:

Crikey.

Misleading intro though, 4870 only beats the 280 in about 3 games I guess, but obviously the factor to take into consideration is the price/performance ratio which seems excellent at the moment towards ATi Cards.

All the tests where ATI beats Nvidia are still pretty close though, a couple fps. I consider anything within 2 to 3 fps "the same". The tests where ATI loses it is usually quite a large loss. So GTX280 is still a faster card by quite a bit. I just dont think the huge extra cost to the 280 is justifyable, I would much rather have a 4870 and use the money I saved for something else.

2 x $299 = $598 price of crossfire 4870

1 x $600 = $600 price of a single GTX280

Crossfire 4870 beats the GTX280 in 99% of things afaik, and it costs less!!

the 4870's kick ass/arse/butt/bottom/rearend with high levels of AA and high resolution too. the legacy of the 2K/3K cards is dead now.

Does the OP work for AMD? Crowncobra, what a shameful and inaccurate thread title.

Crank it up to 2560x1600 and stack on the AA, then re-run the tests. ;)

Or link one of the other reviews at those same resolutions that show GTX280 win by even larger margins.

?:stick:

9800gtx+ gx2

do you think it would have a chance? cost of production would still be high. it seems NV would have to throw profit out the window in order to stay competitive.

adamsleath
06-28-2008, 06:11 PM
same mentality as gx2. dont ask me. the new nv gtx chip gt200 is frikn huge.
i thought shrinking usually helped reduce costs.
2 pcb's plus an interconnect; hey prresto repeato, get the most mileage from each gen chip as possible.
unless nv got a new design up their sleeves.

280gx2 would be king but who the hell could afford one...lol

yerp

better to tack on a physx card to yr ati solution ;) -> bang for buck performance gains.

G0ldBr1ck
06-28-2008, 06:22 PM
Speaking of wich If ATI would just put out some physx it would be nice to just throw one of my 3870's in a spare PCIe slot, it could probly even be a x1/x4 for dedicated physx. Give us somthing to do with our old (as if 3 months is old) cards.

adamsleath

whatever works
if 4870X2 uses gddr5 it's all good, even if clocked slightly slower than 4870 single card.
at least that's wot i tell myself.

G0ldBr1ck
06-28-2008, 06:27 PM
Can you tell from the picture of R700 if thats gddr5?
I believe that the improved interconect and scaling would make up for slower clocks on core and/or ram

adamsleath
06-28-2008, 06:32 PM
someone around probly knows...
looks like qimonda logo to me.

i was wondering about two 4870x2 in cf benchmarks result ?

All I know that it pissed me off quite badly when my 9800gx2 was lagging really badly when I ran COH:OF at 1680x1050 and crancked some AA. As it turned up, the card sucks in that game by itself but, 512mb of mem is just not enough. As adamsleath pointed out - a lot may depend on what kind of AA levels will be used.

For the price HD4870 is simply an amazing buy in my eyes. It has a price/perfomance crown too (if you take into account some overclocking they simply kick ass).
