Linux server, which version should i get?

Im going to be building a cheap linux box to host a quake 3 server. Which version would suit my needs though/or which do you recommend?

Ubuntu seems to have much support and is becoming the most popular Linux distro. I am not sure it really matters as the kernel is the same across distro's. Only the installed packages and desktop GUI really differ. Someone with experience of doing this may go into things deeper and provide more conclusive advice than I :)

I've used Mandriva, redhat, ubuntu and have rolled my own. rolling your own is probably 'best' but the most time consuming which is why I don't do that anymore. Ubuntu server is my current preferred choice for ease of use and availability of updates/patches. RedHat is only really popular in the states but IMO it has stagnated for a while now. For a home system I would seriously look at ubuntu, whether you get the server build or the desktop build for your purpose is up to you though if you're new to unix the desktop one may be easier for your to administer as it has a gui already.

i highly agree, if your gonna go with a distro id say ubuntu.
now depending on your hardware

lowend hardware no gui - ubuntu server
lowend hardware with gui - xubuntu

if your hardware is x64 capable might as well go with it
best remote admin software for it is webmin.
