Im looking to do a new build and wondering about what video cards to get.
Ive been using nvidia stuff and was wanting to get a 280gtx in sli. But also wondering about maybe trying ati cards this time. Which one gives better performance in both gaming and benching? And is there anything i should wait for to be released?

if your going multi card then to get a good MB u need xfire since u would want an intel chipset

Cant go wrong with a 4850/4870 xfire

does the 4870/4850 perform better than the 280gtx's?

Nope, 2x gtx280 is substantially faster all around. If you dont mind the price of course...
Intel chipsets are better but I think they ironed out some of the worst nvidia chipset issues tho.

2x4870 will cost less than 1xGTX 280 and manage to overcome the 280 by greater than 50% margin.

bang for buck goes to ati.

So what intel chipsets would you all suggest? I'm going to be using e8500 btw

X48 if you wanna go CF, P45 if you wanna use only one card...although that's pure theory, due to the ability of X48 to run 2 x 16 lanes PCIe versus 2 x 8 for P45 (where P45 can run 1 x 16 on single card mode). There are discussions about that in P45 threads...

but since P45 is also PCI-E 2.0 the x8-x8 is basically the same as x16-x16 on PCI-E 1.x right?
There will be no performance difference between P45-X48 for crossfire I think.
Go with 2x4850/4870's indeedy :)

I think there was a comparison for them on tweaktown, dont remember where it was though. Crossfire scales a bit better on the X48 over the P45.

Either way though, dual card will perform better than single card. No definitive tests have been done on the matter.
P45 seems to OC a little better but X48 is no slouch either. An E8500 should have no problem hitting 4+ GHz on either board.

I agree with Logos4. P45 is the best chipset for single card owners and x48 the best for crossfire.

well since i am looking to do dual cards, would the Blackops board be a good choice?

Excellent board with great features, but can be picky about ram. Read through the thread here in XS. http://www.xtremesystems.org/forums/showthread.php?t=187199&highlight=black+ops

So does anyone have any 4gb kits that work at rated timings? Or 2bg kits that can oc well?
