My GTX280 won't apply overclocks.

Tried EVGA precision tool 1.2
Rivatuner
NV drivers

The overclocks apply but my benches are the exact same scores as the card at stock......................

I've installed and reinstalled the drivers and everything about 5 times now. The card won't accept overclocks. It's an EVGA card.

CPU Bottleneck?

Chr0n1c
06-26-2008, 05:27 PM
Sorry here is a compare:

http://service.futuremark.com/compare?3dm06=7245627

Rig specs:

Q6600 @ 3.6Ghz
DS3L
4GB Gskill PC8000
EVGA GTX 280

Doostur

I have the EXACT same problem. I have driver 177.40. I overclock and my score remains the same. I'm running a Q9450 @ 3.6 Ghz, 4GB Corsair Dominator 8500 on a Asus Rampage. Tried raising my PCIE to 105/110 and it didn't change anything. Not sure what it could be. I assumed i'm bottlenecked somewhere, just not sure where.

Chr0n1c
06-26-2008, 06:15 PM
Really strange! It just doesn't make any sense. 100Mhz more on the GPU core and it scores the same as the card at stock. Gah!

Doostur
06-26-2008, 06:23 PM
I tried looking for other people who have the FTW Edition so I can compare their setting but havn't found anything yet. Hopefully someone on here knows!

Chr0n1c
06-26-2008, 06:28 PM
Yea I cannot find many people who own this card to compare to. Also Futuremarks ORB gives me an error when trying to browse by GTX280.

I would just assume that an 18K 06 score is low considering the specs and clocks im running. Considering my buds 9800GX2 breaks 20k.....

Chr0n1c, Your using a P35, Try increasing your PCIe Clock to 105-110. If You haven't tried that yet.

Now Doostur's issue is a work in progress, since it's harder for him since he is running Vista-64bit. and He is running a X48.

Doostur
06-26-2008, 06:42 PM
Im at 18,300 on 06. Are you running Vista 64 Bit?

Chr0n1c
06-26-2008, 06:52 PM
Thx Warboy I will try that!

Doostur I am using vista 32 atm.

guttered for you man... i got over 21000 with 2 4870's by the way but we've had the same problem... we couldnt clock the card because the fan didnt cool it enough to even game at stock for over an hour without the driver crashing... fortunatly wizard has helped out the community along with a few xs members and we've been able to modify the bios...
sorry to hear of your woes dude... i'll keep my eyes open for a fix for ya... good luck man...

Chr0n1c
06-26-2008, 07:07 PM
Warboy, no dice, upping the PCIe mhz to 110 didn't up the score.

Purecain, thank you :) and grats on the HD4870's

purecain
06-26-2008, 07:16 PM
its just that ive had that same guttered feeling all day... i was miserable when the card was unstable at stock...

finding a fix is your mission now m8... youll be all excited and in love with it again then...

What GTX 280 are you running? what brand and subversion? if you could, grab Nibitor and grab your video bios, I wish to take a look at it.

I have 2 FTW flashed cards in sli... When I OC them, my scores go down!

They're taking the overclock as verified by GPU-Z and in game monitoring with precision tool. There's no throttling and my temps are great (water)

Makes absoloutly no sense

EVGA GTX280 - Regular.

I think I used nibitor correctly it is attatched in this post.

Thanks for your help!

Edit: Stock cooling on it, and PSU is a PCP&C 610 Brand new.

Can I know your max stable overclock for your 280 so far?

Chr0n1c
06-26-2008, 08:52 PM
This is really my first venture with overclocking this card. I set the fan to 100% and 700C / 1222M seems to be ok so far in benches....it's just that the scores don't reflect it.

sonofander
06-26-2008, 09:33 PM
I've taken my core to 760, shaders to 1550 and mem to 1330... Stable - no artifacting, bsod, driver crashing etc

Scores go down though

Thought maybe it was just to high an OC (diminishing returns) but I get the same results at 700/1480/1280

Go figure LOL

I would try under clocking and using a GPU limited benchmark. Take a few points and verify the numbers are linear with the clock, or if you begin to see some compression as you go up indicating another bottleneck. At this point you don't even know if you are controlling the clock properly or not. Also what about GPU voltage? is it dipping under the load at the higher clock? It sounds like there's a lot more going on.

Chr0n1c
06-27-2008, 07:20 AM
I'll try that tonight.

I wonder if my PSU is strong enough or if the card is thermal throttling.

Stock it runs like a damn champ though.

Does rivaturner work with the GFX280? If it does use it to find the matching shader clock to your core clock. It overclock the shader automatically as your oc you core. I noticed that when the two clocks ain´t harmony there is tendency that you bench score will remain the same or even reduce. Take note i used an 8800 for my test.. And bios flashing is the best way for overclocking..

Chr0n1c
06-27-2008, 07:50 AM
Sorry I don't quite follow, I skipped the 8800 generation.

How do you know which shader clock is correct for your core clock? Riva tuner does see the card.

Shocker003
06-27-2008, 09:18 AM
Well if riva doesn´t detect this card you can start your overclocking by using settings of superclocked models as the base level. The core and shader clocks should be set so that can work in harmony. Another alternative is using the clock and shader settings of eg. an gf8800 maybe superclocked or look for someone who could run an 8800 at 750 or 800mhz and ask him for his shader clock. You can try his setting on you card. Cooling is another thing that makes these cards to shut down. overclocked ram chips can shut down your rig if they get too hot and you will blame you psu, moreover your core temp is under 80°c at that moment. You gain a few point while benching from ocing your ram so leave you ram at stock clocks and work on you core and shader clocks. When these two are stable then you can start looking for the best mem overclock speed which doesn´t need an expert skill to find. A true 550watts psu will run almost any single high end VGA card but when it´s an sli or cf system then you will need a better psu. What causes most bottleneck in vga oc is it´s stock voltage thats why most people hardmod their cards for better oc. Try this link out for more guides

i boot with nvidia 6600GT in second pci-e slot and the GTX280 in first slot , butr windows , everest , sandra , only detect nvidia 6600GT

i think is the card or incompatibility with ASUS P5E X38 ...............

i will test later on gigabyte 965 !

E8400
asus P5E
corsair TX750W
4GB Gskill 8000PQ

nvidia 6600GT in second pci-e slot and GTX280 in first pci-e slot :

windows >>> only detect 1 PCi in use (nvidia 6600)

everest >> only detect 1 PCi in use (nvidia 6600)

sandra >> only detect 1 PCi in use (nvidia 6600)

only using GTX280 >> PC boot ( i hear windows sound) but no image

then I take off GTX280 , install nvidia 6600 = samething >>> pc boot (i hear windows sound) but no image , then i take off the board battery and nvidia 6600 boot OK with image

using only the GTX280 there is no Image , i already try both DVis , VGA + DVI adapter , 2 different monitors , motherboard battery OFF , nothing works

i will try with gigabyte 965 later tonight , if dont work neither >>>> card problem

I removed the 3D PowerSaving Mode basically, The Bios is written to run at 400mhz in 3D apps, But the Extra is written to run at full speed. So I made 3D and Extra both 700mhz on Core. You can load the bios and look for yourself in Nibitor.

Could you check what PCIe speed you're running at?
I have the same problem as you have, O/C not making much difference, on a eVGA GTX280 FTW and Asus P5EWS Pro m/b (X38 chipset).

With GTX280 PCIe runs at v1.1 speed and 8 lanes.
But, with a Ati 4850 it runs at PCIe 2.0 and 16 lanes...

You can find this info in CPU-Z, GPU-Z, Nvidia control panel or system info from 3dmark06.

If the PCIe bus is 'choked' at a 1/4 of the bus speed, it might explain why O/C not making a difference.

I have reported this 'bug' to both eVGA and Asus.

So you do have a problem with the GTX280 as well - you're running in PCIe 1.1/16 mode.
It should be PCIe 2.0/16 for full speed.

Seems like Nvidia have some bugfixes to do... or Intel.
