yep thats next if i cant find this new bios... just want to see for myself how good/loud the stock fan is at its propper settings...
heres a quick bench for ya...

surface deformer....

hit over 303fps, 3870 crossfire would hit 289fps max... 2900 crossfire would hit 292fps max highly overclocked...
crossfire doesnt seem to have any effect on the score, though i had it enabled on all 3 sets of cards anyway....
redid the test with an extra 50mhz on the memory and reached over 310fps with a result of 17483.... 17502 @790core 1100mem

so the fps are in differant corners... lol i thought 'where's the fackin counter gone....'

i made sure there were plenty of cars around me as possible.... 70-79fps on grid with crossfire....@1680-1050 all settings max

New BIOS? To keep the fan from spinning too slowly at idle, or to fix a PowerPlay issue?

purecain
06-26-2008, 10:38 AM
both m8, power play has the core at 500mhz, it should be lower. the memory is at 1000mhz... the fan is doing absolutely nothing to cool the card....... its very bad....

Do you by any chance have an old AMD heatsink? If you diced that up, that would do pretty well.

GDDR5 w/out heatsinks though, I don't know....

i'm only playing it to get my moneys worth... lol gives me a right headache.... i've got to find these trees and set fire to em in central park and no clue as to which direction to go, only to search for a minimum of 30 of em... hate it....

i'm running a single 4870 until my second card arrives tomorrow. i run GRID at max settings @ 1680x1050 and average mid-90's fps. you might have to rename the game's executable to afr-friendlyd3d.exe if it doesn't have a CF profile yet. you also have to make sure you patch the game to 1.1 so the flicker goes away. not that you need CF in that game, but your framerate is lower than mine with a single card.

wow fixed the fan speed.... look at the results, only thing i havnt been able to up yet it the core past 800mhz... but thats for tommorow...

@MrBunglex- thanks for the info pal... appreciated... just ran my first 3dmark 06 bench with these cards... take a look and let me know what you think...

purecain

i used rbe v1.11 to mod the bios and win flash(latest version).... i used gpu-z to save my bios file so that i could mod it in RBE....
with the clocks up and the fans working... i installed the patch for grid and 30fps extra just like that...
heres some pics....

So its confirmed that RBE & winflash work for 48xx right? thanx a lot for the info. Have u tried crysis very high? i just wonder whether any flickering happens or not.....

with the fanspeed fixed, is it very noisy on load?

purecain
06-27-2008, 12:38 PM
no it wasnt real noisy, but i have a real problem as my cards wont work... they booted multiple times yesturday, but when i switched the machine on today it was bye bye....
any ideas....???? this was eventually fixed due to the support of the good members of XS.... also thanks to wizz and bagzzlash...

we need a bios to fix these fan issues....

RBE1.11 uses locked clocks and so initially provides inaccurate clock info(4870 only)...
bagzzlash-the creator of RBE has said that 1.12 will have this lock terminated, unfortunatly modding the bios before this new release is very difficult to get right...
for me without a way of accuratly measuring the amount of vcore you can administer with the app its also risky...

there are a few new hd4870's which will come pre-overclocked...
now if we could get our hands on one of those bios's we would all be happy...
meantime all we can do is hope ati/amd releases a new bios fixing the issue...
or bagzzlash releases 1.12....

purecain wtf is there A and LS and stuff on the replay menu?

I have that game and I don't have that and I'm updated as well.

Is yours torrented or something? Looks like ps3 version or something.

ATI newb question.

Do you need to use both crossfire connectors ?

purecain
07-04-2008, 04:07 PM
no i'm just using both as a mental thing..... lol they only use one connector even with two connectors...

a good example is the 4870x2 and 3870x2... youll notice they only use one connector....

i'm just about to apply some mx-2... we'll soon see if the tim they used is any good.... hardly any improvement with mx-2 and stock cooler....

after market cooling here i come....

purecain
07-07-2008, 11:26 AM
mx-2 has brought down temps by 2-3% max... stock paste is really quite good imo...

Also... when you get your card DO NOT OVERCLOCK YOUR GDDR5 EXCESSIVELY... this ram degrades...

i thought i had a problem with my core's.... and after several days i realised that anything over 1040mhz made the cards unstable under furmark....
my cards are both from HIS...

Can you mount one of those Duorb on one HD4870 and report temps idle+Load please ?

Thanks

yeah would be nice to see some temps with the duorbs. i have 2 of em here waiting for some 4870 JUICE :)

and btw, does the stock 4870 cooler, cool the ram allso? or is it like the 3870 cooler ,where it doesnt even touch the ram
