Currently running on an

AMD 5000+ BE @ 3.03 GHZ / 1.350v pinmod
Corsair XMS DRR2 667 @ 800
Gigabyte GA-MA69VM-S2 (Kinda crappy and basic OCing options)
ATI Radeon x800GTO
FSP 500 watt Blue storm dual 18A 12v

Ok, so I'm wondering if a 4850 will bottleneck, I know it probably will, but how badly in Crysis/3dmark06 etc?

I've been running on this overclocked x800 for 3 years, and it's time to get rid of it, I want to play newer games and stuff.

The price I just can't resist, and I'll probably be upgrading to an Intel E8400 in a couple months, so I'm wondering if this whole thing is worth $200.

Because if it's not, then I'm getting a 3850.

Thanks.

You can grab one now for 150 after rebate and coupon at newegg. You shouldn't be bottlenecked at high res w/AA and AF.

Seeing as how the 4850 is faster than a 3870, I dunno how it will bottleneck your system, especially if you're considering a 3850

bottlenecks aren't that big a deal. i have dual Radeon 3870's on my computer (dual 3870's are about equal to one 4850) with a dual core CPU and my CPU isn't even almost a bottleneck. the CPU runs at only 60-70% in Crysis and a mere 40% in Call of Duty 4 @ 125 fps. i know my CPU is faster than yours, but you'll be fine.

I'm pretty sure he was worried about the CPU being the bottleneck. Unless I misread something somewhere...

if run your games at something higher then 1024x800 then u wont have a bad bottle neck it should be all about the same

and the 4850 is well worth the extra money over the 3850

i am buying some components as well. i have 19'' monitor, so i guess it would be better to buy HD4850 than HD4870? other components will be asus p5q, teamgroup 2x2gb kit, e8200. whats your opinion? i am just going to invest in something that will last long with games. is HD4870 worth extra money on 19'' 1240x1028 resolution?

the 4870 is only a little bit faster than a 4850 at your resolution. save your money and get the '50.

Ok, well it looks like I am definitely getting a 4850 then.

It's currently $200 CAD at Ncix, and I just live a couple blocks away from the store. Problem is, they aren't in stock with a lot of them, so I'll have to keep checking and find a right time.

Plus I need $60 more bux :(

I didn't see you mention what monitor or resolution you're using. Except for some of the most demanding games, 4850 runs everything at or above 60 FPS for 1680x1050 and below. All LCD monitors are limited 60Hz, so unless you're driving high res like 1920x1200 or 2048x1536, it's your LCD monitor that will be a bottleneck.

I'll be running at 1440 x 900 with AAx8 AFx16 on a 19" widescreen
