View Full Version : 700mhz wall on HD4850 is smashed.

First a disclaimer:
I am offering this info to help, there is alot of risk involved with the solution I have found.
OK where to start, I have been searching high and low for a way to get past the 700mhz "wall" that is imposed by CCC. currently there is only 1 known tool that can clock a 4XXX series GPU beyond 700mhz it is the AMD GPU TOOL, however the edition that is needed for HD48XX's is not publicly available ..yet. ;)
I have been in contact with lots of people who have worked very hard on this issue, and most don't even have a card to test with , so I have been their Guinnea pig , so to speak.
I tried all of the usual suspects and found none able to raise the speeds properly. I even flashed bios's repeatedly with no change. Then W1zzard put me in contact with BAGZZlash, who is an author of RBE. or Radeon Bios Editor. I had tried it several times and while it could identify and modify the bios's it would not take effect once flashed to the card.
Today BAGZZlash and I chatted on MSN Messenger and he asked me to change all of the clockss in the settings tab, which I did (2-d as well as 3-d). and It worked!!! I have had many issues throughout the day with it but the flashing and changing has been easy. the hard part is the fact that once you raise the voltage the lack of powerplay rears it's head. I was experiencing graphics corruption, reboots etc. all after sucessfully completing a bench. when it is time for the driver to drop back to 2-d it doesn't like the core being so high.
750mhz needs about 1.35v or more to pass crysis bench, also the 3DMark stuff. but Grid was fine with less voltage. at 800 it can run the benches but when it ends the screen gets corrupted......scary, if you've ever lost a card you'll know what I mean. and to get 800 I needed 1.5v which I believe is the reason for the 4870 using a higher quality power circuit.
Water cooling is a must for this procedure. these little buggers get hot, and increasing the voltage makes them immediately unstable unless you can keep them cool. I am using Danger Den Maze 4's and a d-5 pump along with a 120.2 rad all in my case. they fit fine just like the 3850's, the shim is not an issue for these and most common blocks.
I'd like to keep this thread for people to post up their findings. we will soon have software to clock with but in the mean time this is it. and it has risks involved. make sure you have a way to flash back in case you get a corrupted flash or something is set too high.
this thread is useless without pics so here is one, keep in mind this is not a great score, no tweaks just raw clocks. I am on a very bloated install of XP while I do my testing,The best I will save for HWBOT..
http://img53.imageshack.us/img53/3285/3080505750coreos2.jpg
so basically here is the procedure:
1. save your original bios. GPU-Z is what I used to extract the bios. I make several copies including 1 I saved on a flashdrive.
2. open the bios file with RBE. then mod all of the clocks in the clocks tab (obviously not all need modded but it is what it took for mine to work.) this thread is to find out which ones will need to be changed and which won't!. I CAN ONLY TEST SO FAST BUT WITH SEVERAL OF US WE SHOULD BE ABLE TO NAIL THIS DOWN SOON.
3. save the file after it is modded.
4. Use winflash to flash the newly modded bios, reboot and test.
This is still in the trial and error stage, please don't flash unless you are aware of the risks. I appologize in advance if anyone damages their card attempting this.
I debated on wether or not to post this without having the bugs ironed out, but I knew that many testers would be better than just one.
Here is what you will need:
GPU-Z 0.2.4 : http://www.techpowerup.com/downloads/SysInfo/GPU-Z/
K404's volt mod thread: http://www.xtremesystems.org/forums/showthread.php?t=190990
RBE , latest: http://www.techpowerup.com/downloads/Utilities/RBE/old/
winflash latest : http://www.techpowerup.com/downloads/1062/Winflash_2.0.1.1.html
Many thanks to W1zzard , Crackerjack, BAGZZlash, K404 and I know I am forgetting some but I can edit them in later:D

Thanks again for the good work and findings. Perhaps someone will find a way to lock voltages without powerplay kicking in so you can operate in 3D Voltages all the time and won't experience that corruption issue. I know Rivatuner does this as soon as you change the clockspeed with the 3870, but unforutunately it will not be updated until towards the end of July according to Unwinder. Can't wait to see some more benches @ 750MHz core, so we'll know just how much memory bandwidth improves things on the 4870.

ok so if your runing x64 use 2.0.0.7 it will work..... i still have to flash though.
EDIT:
ok i have some good news and some bad news. i will start with the bad DONT USE WINFLASH!!!!!!:banana::banana::banana:ed the card... BUT i found that 3.59 of atiflash works perfect.. got the card alive again... so flash away safely..

EDIT 2: ok i had to change allmy clocks in RBE before it actually worked. i will start over on a new bios to try some more combos..... 720 mhz core 1.2v 3d03 47.9k 4.4ghz cpu just keeping an update for u all..

mine is hard modded, I did both cards. I hard mod the voltages when i fix up a card.

I know that you have your card vmodded, i have been following your threads very closely :) . Let me try to explain where I am coming from on the 2D-3D Voltages part since I have a vmodded 3870 that should behave similarly in a sense.
If the 4850 behaves any similarly, when you measure vGPU when you are out of windows, say in your BIOS.... you are actually reading the 3D Voltages, 1.35v in your case. When you get into Windows, you get a voltage drop because it is in 2D mode.
Now from what you wrote in your first post, your 2D/3D clocks are both the same. So when you drop out of 3DMark, you are still at the same freqency, but under lower voltages. Thats probably why you have the corruption.
On my RV670, powerplay becomes permanently disabled as soon as the slightest clock change is made from Rivatuner. It will be in 3D Voltage all the time and remain in 3D Clocks. That is why I made the comment on locking down voltages. Even if you have it hardmodded, you still experience the voltage drop in 2D. Again, I do not have a RV770 card yet, but since the 4850 shares the same PCB and Powerplay is behaving in a similar fashion, it sounds like the problem you are running into. And of course, we dont have Rivatuner this time around yet
Keep up the great work :)

...I completed the crysis bench at 1.38v 810mhz...and can get 750mhz stable with only 1.23v. I'm using the stock cooler as well. I don't know if you got a bad card? Or I got a good one or what? I have been adjusting voltage with a pencil mod btw, not through the bios as the hex values did not make sense to me.

Do you lose the 2D/3D frequency switching when you flash the bios ?

Do you lose the 2D/3D frequency switching when you flash the bios ?
no. I edited the tables manually with a hex editor and flashed with atiflash though
albon
06-25-2008, 08:57 AM
But you edited only the 3D clocks, right ?
I'm asking this because the newest official bios for 4850 makes it run cooler in 2D mode with 160/500 frequencies, so keeping the ability to switch to these on idle is quite important to me.

You didnt answer to my question :)
Some MSI cards have newer bios, you need 8.6 hotfix aswell to have these lower frequencies kick in in 2D.

And about your pencil mod, why is there a 100k resistor to solder? I don't understand, do I have to both solder a resistor and shade 2 contact points?

And why don't you try editing the MSI bios yourself with the RBE tool ?

He's right, the new MSI bios is version 011.004 and not 011.003 like your HIS and Asus bios.
It differs from the HIS and Asus (and other 003 biosses) that in 2d mode, the clocks are 160/500 and not 500/750. I think this is a better adaptation of Powerplay, I wouldn't be surprised if with this new 004 bios, the card only uses around 25W in idle mode
Just flashed the MSI 011.004 bios into my Asus. Just like the Asus 011.003 bios I can still run 700/2300 without errors/artefacts.
Right now I'm modding the MSI bios for higher 3D clocks, just to see if I can do 705MHz on the core.

Keep in mind that 160 remains in new bios as long as Overdrive is Off. If you enable Overdrive the minimum frequency raises to 500, so overclock is only possible through bios modding if you wanna keep low 2D temps.

Concering those bios requests: I'll post rapid share links this afternoon. Right now I'm at work.
Important!, I use watercooling. I wouldn't recommend going above 700MHz with the stock cooler
Did some further testing last night, but it seems that 710MHz on the core is the max with stock voltage for me.
715MHz gives me artefacts in AtiTool after 1 minute or so.
But I encountered something else.
It seems that the speedsteps for the overclocking the memory becomes rather large after a certain threshold.
When I set 1125MHz in bios, GPU-Z reports 1125MHz being used correctly
When I set 1135MHz in bios, GPU-Z reports 1125MHz being used
When I set 1140MHz in bios, GPU-Z reports 1125MHz being used
When I set 1145MHz in bios, GPU-Z reports 1125MHz being used
I recall I don't have that problem with Overdrive. When I set 1140MHz in Overdrive, GPU reports 1140MHz.
What's that about? Does driver level overclocking allow for smaller steps concerning mem speeds?
*edit* found something about the changing steps in a MSI HD4850 review on Techpowerup.com:
When changing memory clocks I noticed that the step size (with the software I used) is 25 MHz, so you can only OC to 1000 MHz, 1025 MHz and 1050 MHz - quite a limitation. After 1050 MHz the steps become smaller again.
http://www.techpowerup.com/reviews/MSI/HD_4850/24.html
Perhaps this pattern repeats itself at around 1100MHz

Be sure to backup your original bios and have a automated restore floppy/usb disk at hand, should anything go wrong. Use at own risk
Make sure you have appropiate cooling!

*edit* found something about the changing steps in a MSI HD4850 review on Techpowerup.com:
http://www.techpowerup.com/reviews/MSI/HD_4850/24.html
Perhaps this pattern repeats itself at around 1100MHz
Oops, didn't realise you were using water!!:p:
Thanks anyway!! :)

It sounds almost like we may be able to hit the limit on air cooling using the 4850. All that extra vregs on the 4870 may make it better if you are using water and above, but I imagine the 4850 has to be pretty starved for bandwidth at 900MHz core.

What effect do you suppose this to have? It will only disable overdrive for this segment inside the BIOS is protected by a checksum. Because this sum's algorithm is unknown, we can't do anything about it. You're right, the values are what overdrive offers as a maximum for overclocking using overdrive, but if they get changed, overdrive won't work at all. At least, this was the case for 3xx0 cards.
[XC] gomeler

Could disabling overdrive enable rivatuner frequency adjustments by borking the driver controls on reverting clocks to the stock values? Perhaps it'll just bork the card BIOS? Worth a shot

Interesting, seems the heat output on the 4850 isnt that much greater than the 3870 then. I break just over 55C @ 1GHz on 1.55v with my 3870 with my Accelero S1.

awesome, good to know. let us know what caps you are going to add or replace the existing ones with
have you also done the vDDR mod? I can't decide if I want to go all out with the 4850 on some good air, or drop the extra $100 for the memory bandwidth of 4870 and better power regulation circuitry. I play on 1920x1080, which is only 8% more pixels than 1600x1200
Any Chance Some one could run some benches at 750 mhz ?(other than crysis!) trying to decide on single 4870 on air or vmodded 4850 on water
Edit: would a would a 120mm rad be enough for a chipset cooler and a 4850?

Yep, any cooler that fits on the 3870 should fit fine on the 4870. They share the same mounting holes

So far I have achieved 820mhz/1100 on the stock cooler. I used a mixture of bios and pencil mod to get 1.17v idle and 1.33 load :)
Once you use RBE to change the fan profile it is actually quite a sufficient cooler.

Anyone had similar issues on my prob?
Hi I have a problem regarding the RBE latest version. I set the fan into default settings and it shows on GPU-Z 50% fan speedand it drops my temps from 72deg to 61deg :), my problem is it underclock my GPU Clock into 500Mhz but the Default Clock remains 625 Mhz with same Memory 993Mhz I think. Is this normal? Sorry I can't provide screenshot still here @ the office :( Anyways, I revert my default BIOS and still waitin' for your answers :)
Hmm Im not sure buddy, But Im pretty sure when you check on GPU-Z under Graphics Card Tab at the botton you can see this following:
Using RBE with 50% FanSpeed (I used the Set all fan settings to recommended values that's why came up 50% FanSpeed)
GPU Clock: 500Mhz Memory:9XXMhz
Default Clock 625 Mhz Memory:9XXMhz
Also on GPU-Z Sensor Tab:
GPU Core Clock: 500Mhz
GPU Memory Clock: 9XXMhz
My Default BIOS
GPU Clock: 625Mhz Memory:9XXMhz
Default Clock 625 Mhz Memory:9XXMhz
Another thing, I don't see anything this kind of tables on my latest RBE :(

@Battlestar: I am also missing the area indicated by red box, however, I just used the graph and bumped the minimum up, and steepened the slope some. However, Sensors (page in GPU-Z) doesn't accurately report GPU speed when operating in 3d mode, just sits at 500 all the time... Not sure if this is just cause its early, or what.
Also, my down clock to Power State 1 (power play 2d setting) doesn't change clock speed at all. So I'll try another setting... Perhaps I just have to use the right numbers. Can anyone confirm if changing voltage in Bios with RBE actually works? Or are we bound to mod for voltage tweaks?

For anyone who is interesed, I have modded the 4850 MSI bios....not only have I raised clocks and voltage under load, but I have improved on the powerplay feature as well as the fanspeeds. IMO this is how it should have been shipped from the factory...it is a bit loud while gaming and such but this way the cooler is actually effective!:

The fan will only go down to around 25% in idle and 2d clocks, but it's pretty much inaudible and during 3d clocks should keep it under 70c full load, more like mid-low 60s.
All the reference 4850s should be able to do this, but if you are getting crashes then I can make you up a slightly less aggressive profile, or you can edit it yourself with the RBE tool. I recommend stress testing with rthdribl and some Crysis benches.

Great work people! How about putting in some benches? The memory can hardly be overclocked and I wonder if with such aggressive core clocks (such as 925MHz :O) the card is bandwidth starved?

Thanks gurusan!! this will come very handy!! I did my own profile with RBE too, but I couldn't fiddle with vgpu settings. I might give this one a try after lowering the core and mem freq. to a more acceptable 680/1075 (these ones I know my card can handle...)

Hi Gurusan,
It seems your pretty active on this thread :) Can I ask a favor? Could you make me one that comes with:
GPU Clock: 675Mhz
Memory: 1000Mhz
FanSpeed 60% on Load and 25% on Idle?
Clock Info1:160/500?
Clock Info2:500/750?
You may DL the stock BIOS of my card here: http://www.techpowerup.com/vgabios/index.php?page=1&architecture=ATI&manufacturer=Sapphire&model=HD+4850&interface=&memSize=0
Thanks-Battlestar
Try this, the fan profile may not be exactly as you want it, you can play with the slope using RBE:

The stock bios is 1.15-1.16 load, my bios is 1.20-1.21v load so you should be able to do much more than 680mhz on 1.2v :) No harm in being conservative though

I have a small problem with RBE: every time I mod a bios and save it, i lose all the voltage settings, they re replaced with ---
For example if I open an official bios file or your bios Gurusan in RBE, i see the voltages, but when I save the file and reopen it all the voltages are gone (---).

-put it on a bootable usb stick (to make a bootable USB stick google "hp drive key boot utility"
-then boot from the usb drive
-type: atiflash -p 0 (newbios)
if the SSIDs don't match then type atiflash -p -f 0 (newbios)

Yeah, you're probably right, but in a previous test I tried 680/1100 and ATITool started giving me errors and artifacting, so I guess a higher mem overclock is somehow limited on my card. Furthermore I've been following some user reviews throughout the web and in most of the tests the jump from 1075 to 1100Mhz isn't giving higher performance in games or higher framerates, actually in some cases the performance lowered a bit, perhaphs the mem chips are encountering some gpu bottlenecking, I don't know...
Anyway, might try a 700ish on the core 'though :p:

To follow that, there is a BUG in RBE 1.10 and 1.11 which misinterprets Voltage values if you are in countries where decimal separator is "," (comma).
So if you live in Europe (except UK), change your Regional settings to English(UK) in Control Panel, before modding bioses with RBE.

All the reference 4850s should be able to do this, but if you are getting crashes then I can make you up a slightly less aggressive profile, or you can edit it yourself with the RBE tool. I recommend stress testing with rthdribl and some Crysis benches.

hmm I don't know why it's doing that. If it were unstable then usually the driver will crash and then recover...or the computer will freeze.
Is something else taking priority of your CPU? Does it do it with the normal bios?

Hey guru I'm having an issue with the 2D profile working with your BIOS. It seems to run with the 3D settings all the time. I did, tweak it a little, but just for the Fan profile.
Also (possibly) unrelated, this is what happens to the Overdrive tab in CCC for me, it occasionally flashes to show what should be there, only with blank values. (see attached file) I don't think that should be normal :p:
This is with the Hotfix Driver. I've tried reinstalling it, seems to only be a CCC issue, as the in game performance is solid so I dont think it's in the drivers. I'll try stressing it with the crysis bench and see if maybe it just isn't stable?

hmm that's odd, I don't know what to say as the 2d profiles are working fine for me? Perhaps it's a bad driver install? How about downloading a stock bios from the techpowerup database and editing it yourself to see if you have the problem again.
On another note, I just did a 3dmark06 run and am pleasantly surprised at the result. This was at 720/1200 with an E6750 @ 3.64ghz, 4gb OCZ @ 1090mhz 5,5,4,14

it is weird actually, cause i had a 725/1050 oc which ran fine, then i ran rthdribl and it would do that 2fps thing every once in a while. Then i flashed the bios to 750/1100 and when i restarted, the mouse was really lagging, i couldn't do anything in windows.
flashed back to my 725/1050 oc and it was doing the same, flashed back to stock bios and it still did the same. i turned everything off, checked connections to see if my raid sata cable was getting loose, turned off the psu completely, pressed the power button a few times, then restarted and it worked like normal with stock bios.
i gave the 750/1100 oc another try and now the computer is working flawless again and rthdribl is not doing the 2fps thing anymore.
not sure what the problem was exactly.
but thanks for the help. i have 44 load w/ the accelero.

Hi!
I figured what may be part of the problem. As you know, some clock info settings of RBE are locked by default. As this was helpful for 3xx0 cards, it might be disturbing for 4xx0 cards, which is why from RBE v1.12 on, it will be turned off by default.
In RBE v1.11, it's on by default and so, it kicks in: RBE loads the BIOS and displays the clocks, but due to the lock, all locked clocks are the same. Again, for 3xx0 cards, these clocks really were the same, but not for 4xx0 cards.
Even when you unlock after loading the BIOS, the information is gone. So, I made a screenshot with lock turned off by default and RBE shows this:
http://freenet-homepage.de/BAGZZlash/Unlocked.png
So maybe you should consider changing clock info 3 to 9 for overclocking (at least 3 and 7 to 9, for I'm pretty sure 4 to 6 are used in UVD mode only), clock info 1 for 2D mode and clock info 2 for low 3D mode (i.e. Vista aero).
A 4870 BIOS I loaded had "high" clocks at 3 and 9 only (besides 4 to 6 for UVD), so maybe this may be enough for overclocking. Clock info 8 is medium performance setting (i.e. for Vista aero) for state 3 then. See:
http://freenet-homepage.de/BAGZZlash/Unlocked2.png
Furthermore, clock info 7 may be the 2D setting if the card is at powerplay state 3.
Long story short - You maybe want to use this as a basis:
http://freenet-homepage.de/BAGZZlash/Unlocked3.png
I entered a GPU clock of 710 and a memory clock of 1030 MHz to denote "overclock here". Enter the values of your choice.
I'd be glad if anyone gave me an update about whether this was useful.

I'm currently testing with Gurusan's bios and i figured out that you don't need to set vgpu at 1.4v in bios to get 1.21v (read out with DM)
This is what I got:
1.40v set in bios gives me 1.9v ( 1865 milli v to be exact) on my DM
1.30v set in bios gives me 1.9v ( 1865 milli v to be exact) on my DM
1.25v set in bios gives me 1.9v ( 1865 milli v to be exact) on my DM
Right now I'm @ 750MHz with 1.9v, not bad I think, still haven't done a hardmod :)

Isn't that normal for using Aero Glass in Vista though? I know on my card, monitoring my system with Everest on my G15 LCD, that the GPU speed on my 8800GTX is always at "3D" speed, it never changes. That bugged me until I realized that it must be Aero Glass since the desktop is kinda always in 3D now, if I boot into my XP 32-bit install, I found that being at the desktop there, the GPU was running at "2D" speeds.
In an ideal world, I'd like to be able to do something like run the GPU at something lower, maybe 500Mhz for starters by default, and then when I go to play a game, some app has a profile for that game and kicks in to OC the GPU/RAM.
That said, my 4850s that weren't supposed to show up until Tuesday showed up today :) So I need to crank out some benchmarks on the old card first just so I have some comparisons between a 4850 and 4850 CF.

a way to increase the voltage is to shade the resistor or point harder/darker. This will give you less resistance and more volts. Always check with the dmm though so that your card won't blow up.

Yeah even the sensor tab is showing the 3D clocks. And the temps reflect it, so I know it's not just a program bug. I'm at a loss.

That better be fixed with the next driver, there is no reason two monitors should count as "3D".

Then write it. If you think what W1zzard and BAGZZlash ( and others)do is easy, write some yourself. Nobody pays these fine people, they do it to help the community and ask for nothing but the occasional thank you or other compliment. Many people have spent a great deal of time, effort and even money to bring this information to you on a silver platter. you should be thankfull there is even a way to get above 700, it took a lot of effort to get this far.
sry to offend you
but i never said it was easy.
and i know that you had help from some of the best guys in the community getting where you are now.
i geuss i just took o/c programes for granted using nvidia products for the past few yrs.
but like i said bios flashing not for me since it voids my warrenty with the brand i use plus the fact i dont like to have high clocks all the time
again sry to get your wares in a knot

2d is working for me. GPUz always shows me the 3d clocks in the main window while the 2d clocks are shown correctly on the sensors tab. My idle temps are a lot better too.
thats the intended behaviour. first page will show the 3d performance clocks and sensors will show realtime clocks
Out of curiousty... how well do all of your overclocked cards hold up when running FurMark (http://www.ozone3d.net/benchmarks/fur/). I'm able to run 700/1000 at 1920x1200, with the fan cranked up a bit, in rthdribl (x16 multisample), 3DMark and games. However, running FurMark will bring my card to a halt.

you can change the voltage up to 1.20, that's the limit on the bios vmodding

Nice going! :) How much are you feeding the core? and what would you consider safe for 24/7 with water?
Mixture of pencil and bios modding for:
1.18V idle
1.48V load
I set .94v in the bios for the idle state so that it would stay at a low vGPU when not in use :)
I think 1.5ish under water would be fine if you keep it at a low idle voltage like I did so that it's not always getting 1.5v

how about for maximum core without using pencil mods, only using RBE?
Could messing around with BIOS flashing on a CF setup have any affect on whether the second card is utilized?
The reason I ask is that I had one 4850, flashed around with it (mostly just fan changes) after reading up on RBE, etc., and then threw in another 4850. Now the second 4850 will not fire up during gaming/benchmarking but it is detected by CCC and Vista. I even flashed both cards back to the stock BIOS.

Holy cow gurusan. You should try over clocking the pci-e bus some. With that much raw computational power. I bet games would respond to the slightly wider bus.

Because most onboard SATA controllers are connected to the PCIe bus, you're also overclocking the SATA bus. It differs from mobo to mobo, but on my DFI DK P35 for example, 115MHz is the max for the SATA bus. Go any higher and you get curruption, especially with Raid configs

there is lots of room there so I guess yes but I don't use the cooler you mention so Ican't say for sure. mine has a few old Zalman blue VGA sinks and never gets very hot. general rule would be 10% so 2.2 personally I don't oc the ram too much as they generally don't help the performance much compared to the risk of death.

the s1 rev2 ramsinks are the only thing you can use out of it, there's no pwm sinks that work, that thermalright sink set will be perfect for one card though.
Thats basically what i used left over thermalrights and some others I had laying around. I would grab 2 sets of spared though.
Jaystar
06-29-2008, 02:13 AM
Thanks for the input guys. I agree you can never have enought ramsinks around. So two pwm sets it is.
On the subject of vram I bet the stock heatsink does heat that stuff up a good bit, but you get 8 litte ramsinks free with the s1. So I figure why not cover them.
Now these cards are pretty much built on the same 55nm process as the 3850 and 3870. So the chips should be able to tollerate similar voltages 24/7.
