hello all - i just stumbled on this site over the weekend and i have been addicted to it. being my first post, i just wanted to thank everyone involved here as i had no idea what was possible in this arena of owning a PC. first off if i apologize if this is the wrong area to post.

i use windows for gaming about it - i am primarily a Mac user. i have built 3 gaming pcs over the years and never really tweaked them as they always seemed to do the job for my use. i have an aging rig which i have OCed to 10% via the BiOS, but was wanting to bang on it a little until i my new rig gets funded. i guess i am bored and wanting to mess with the cpus i have... especially since my old fan on the cpu blew and i was going to buy a new one. in a nutshell, i see this rig as my first machine to torture test and i realize a lot of you out there have been here and done that. so what would you do with this mobo lying around about to be retired?

here is the baseline of what i have:

Asus An8-SLI Deluxe Socket 939 - newest BIOS
AMD 64 4000+ (San Diego) 2.4 cpu / 1mb cache / 1.35 v / 89 w
-or-
AMD Athlon 64 3500+ 2.20GHz / 512KB Cache / 1000MHz FSB / Socket 939 / Clawhammer Core
(needing to buy new cooling device)
plenty of SATA drive space
2 sticks of 1 gig of Corsair TWINX Dual Channel PC3200 400mhz RAM
Window XP 64 Pro
BFG Tech 9600GT OC 512 ddr3
X-Finity 500 watt PSU

anyways, for those still reading, i need a new cpu cooling - with the mind to OC with air cooling - suggestions welcome. i posted both cpus since i did not know if one could be tortured more. so basically what cpu would you cook first with my current setup? ill figure out the bios tweaks etc as that seems to be fun to figure out.

thanks for any information on this hardware.

The Thermalright IFX-14 is the best CPU cooler I have evr come across. Make sure it will fit in your case though. It isn't compatible with Socket 939 CPU's out of the box though and requires the purchase of an additional bolt through kit.

Is definately worth the money.

Or pick up a cheap XP-120 2nd hand or a TRUE and have some fun tweaking both chips. Basically have fun messing around and learn through experience.

The San Diego would OC alot better than the 3500+, and it has more cache as well. Because of 90nm vs 130nm process, it'll also run cooler, which means less fan noise:)

The Tuniq Tower 120 is very good as well, but as long as you get one of those HUUUGE coolers I guess it's OK:p:
