View Full Version : Vista 64bit users sound off
I would just like to know who uses it and what is their experiences , i am thinking of sticking it onto my main desktop rig when it is build , And i'm wondering about drivers and programs and if the 4gb helps in anyway.
thanks.
::btw trolls stay under their bridges please.
I like it a lot. IMO there's no point in getting Vista if you don't get the 64-bit edition. I don't have that many issues with drivers, just get the right ones and you'll be fine. Very stable for me, the only BSoDs have been from unstable OCs.
cool , i would stick it on my laptop but the lack of dell 64bit drivers surprises , there are hacked ones , but i dont know how messy it would all be..
thanks
Shouldn't need drivers from Dell's website. Vista includes the chipset drivers for just about every Intel chipset, desktop and mobile (so you won't need disk controllers, USB, network, etc.). You should just need video from Intel's webside. Should include drivers for sound if it uses some version of the Realtek codec.

yeah but webcam , fingerprint scanner , card reader and dell media buttons , onboard firewire... but it has 3gigs of ram , so next time i have to re-install i might plug 64bit into this and give it a bash , ive nothing to loose but a few hours :D

I have installed 64 bit Vista several times and used it extensively. It's better than the other Windows options. Just make sure you get the order of installation right. I will install Vista, then SP1, then drivers, then download on-line updates. Install SP1 using the network admin pre-packaged download version. Otherwise I found later updates looking for unnecessary "fixes" for stuff that wasn't broken and sometimes SP1 won't be available to you if you install your drivers first if there is any sort of minor compatibility problem.
You can try stress testing a bit after the drivers and before the final windows post-SP1 download to make sure a driver didn't estabilize anything.
Finally, Kaspersky Internet Security has a current bug that can cause recurrent BSOD for some users. Not sure about Kaspersky AV, but IS is problematic.
thanks :D , i use spyware Doctor so i will have a google if that works ok :D

been on Vista 64 since oct on my 1st sig rig...
avast and windows defender...
the only 2 apps I lost were an old copy of adobe photoshop 5 and a config console for the logitech gamepad 2 (the cheapo $10 one)..
everything else is fine...
go with 4gb, no reason to go with 2gb.. preferably a 2x2gb kit... instead of 4x1gb...
I have 2 smp clients and media center open all the time, and it usually sits right above 2.

+1 - works great on my MacBook Pro. Apple has great drivers for Vista x64 - go figure.

there are hacked ones
Actually Papu, Microsoft requires hardware vendors to submit both 32 and 64 bit drivers when seeking WHQL certification.
I'm running Vista Ultimate 64 on both my M1530, and my main desktop, and couldn't be happier... Do a bit of research around the net, you can find 64bit drivers for all the hardware on the M1530. A good place to start is www.notebookreview.com (http://www.notebookreview.com)
I think the driver I had the most trouble finding was for the Alps touchpad, but if I remember correctly it is shared with one of Dell's 17" models, which Dell does support Vista 64 on.
Anyways, the point of all that was, M1530 + Vista Ultimate 64 = Good times.

I use vista64 full time for months with alot of different setups, the only one that gave me issues was my sli setup. Go with 4gb and a fast hard drive setup, either a single raptor or raid a couple seagates, i think it helps in vista.
thanks guys
seems easier than i thought :D
i shall soon be rocking 64bit \0/

once you get used to it, you'll like it...
just n case you were wondering where all that ram usage came from in my above tskmgr ss..
here's a sort by ram processes ss.. you can see the big ones are media center and folding dual smp's...
without those it would be a lot less

The more I use Vista the more I like it. Only real issue I had was my first install got hit with the folder view reset bug. Googling showed a few others with the issue. It's not major, but insanely annoying. No folder would keep it's view settings. Opening more than one window would reset every single folder on the machine. I mucked around so much trying to fix it I broke Windows. This install is absolutely flawless.

I like vista x64... but I've kept a back up xp x64 install because of SLI corruption issues I've had with the 9800gx2. I also like the vista resource monitor it's something Xp needs big time.

I've been using Vista Ultimate x64 almost a year now, and I really don't have any problems with it at all. Just like with XP when I was running it, any problems I encountered were typically of my own creation.

like it, love it, use it
I have a few copies i have to get rid off:)
but it is awesome anyway and haven't had any drivers problems at all only driver signature enforcement that keeps popping up upon reboot nowadays and i don't remember what i installed that has unsigned drivers
apart from that,64bit is the way to go!!

Spyware doctor does not yet run on Vista 64. We are still awaiting an update from them and I bump the post every so often just to see what the status is.

also a vista 64 users, tho i only have 2gbs of ram seeing as my one set of crucials decided to go boom! have had no problems and my game performance has been the same when i moved over from xp, i checked...
vista uses more ram because it uses the ram as a file cache, to increase startup speeds of your applications. So dont worry if you only have 10% free or something.
Another thing the nvidia drivers for vista seem to have more features, the lcd scaling option works and so do hardware color controls in my custom media players.
