anyone know a tool to control/manage fan speeds for the 4850?
It seems rivatuner support will not come before end july.

If anyone finds anything Id be interested as welll. The 4850 runs a little warm with the default fan settings, its pretty aggrevating actually. Im ideling at 53C and loading at 76C.

Try to edit the fan control via BIOS if any utility supports it. Ive done that on my X1950XTX cards. Worked like a charm.

If you have a Sapphire - good news :D

According to an email I recieved from Sapphire today there's a new bios that fixes the issue - didn't have a chance to try it out though as we're really pushed for time testing the HD4870's (You'll see tommorrow, but they're pretty special).

@thomas66,
i read removing the blue wire on the fan connector will do the trick. you might want to try this as i havent done this yet because i still have my 8800gt.

I put a accellerro s1 rev2 on one of mine i had laying around. Knocked idle temps to low 40's and I havnt seen over 60c load since, I dont even have a fan directly mounted on it.

Hey, the Accelero S1 comes with ram heatsinks. Just stick them on, easy.

Also for anyone interested:

The chips under the copper-pegged heatsink has no default heatsink to go along with the Accelero S1. So what I did was take a hack saw and cut the copper-pegged heatink off the default cooler and just reused that.

It was simple and easy to cut off. It took 1 min of slow sawing to make a grove in the thin copper, then it snapped off it a perfect straight line. Refasten it to the card using the 2 screw holes.

The S1 comes with a straight piece that is intended for use on X1900 series. I cut it off and use thermal glue to cool the rest of the Mem on my 4850.

Any luck? This is killing me haha.
Someone suggested flashing to the asus bios and using their tool, but im not too thrilled about that. A software fix would be better :-)

The RBE program I tried doesn't allow fan speed adjustments with the Asus reference BIOS out there... DANG. But if you DO have aftermarket cooling, you can volt mod easily! :)

Not sure if the Gainward BIOS is out to flash other brands cards though. I flashed my Visiontek to Asus and the fan control works great! Temps around 43 idle, 73 load at 675/1140 OC with fan set at 50%. Sound blends in well with Antec 900 fans at medium.

Yeah, too bad SmartDoctor only works with Vista: it causes an immediate BSOD on my home XP SP3... :(

Dunno, I tried everything but as soon as it's done with this initializing/loading/whatever process bar and tries to bring up the UI, my machine goes ballistic, bang, BSODs. :shrug:
