That GPU client is fast. Cleared 10k today and the day is not over yet. I wonder what long term wear and tear this will have on the system.

Yea, when you get 8K+ PPD, 10k is nothing...
I had mine chugging for about a day until i got home and started sweating hardcore...

Wear and tear is more than normal usage, but as long as you keep your temps from getting sky high all the time it'll help a lot.

Shouldn't be a problem for most NV cards (evga/xfx) just make sure you keep
all the boxes and receipts (or whatever needed for the warranty)
It's a little too fast check out the team stats:

I wouldn't run that GPU client w/o after-market air or watercooling... Running at around 80C+ continuously can't be good for the GFX cards (which is what most of them hit with the stock cooler). WCing is the way to go, 45C max and all I hear is the card squealing instead of a fan screaming :D

Heh the only upside to running a weak card is lower temps. My 8600GT overclocked to the max at 100% load never passes around 65*c. At stock clocks it won't hit 60*c. Not low, but not 80*c.
I'd go watercooling, I have about $400USD, not sure we're I would put my rads though.

Mine GPU is under a MCW60. 38C max. Our team stats are looking good.

Is that 38C diode or what everest shows? I got up to 40C water these days, with close to 35 ambient :/
G92 temps should always be better since they have no heatspreaders...

My 8800gts 512 is OC'd, stock fan on auto. Both CPUID hardware monitor and Rivatuner report 59*C-60*C and never go higher. I can always turn the fan manually up to 50% and I won't even here it.
Guys, is there a program to monitor GPU usage like the task manager w/ the cpu in windows?

jcool, it's an eVGA card with eVGA precision program and rivatuner showing 38C max 34C idle

While it's easier to get now, 10k isn't "nothing". :)
Every bit helps. Every WU has the chance to be "the one" that ultimately unlocks a cure.

I just started folding a few days ago w/ GPUv2 and I already have 11733 points, but more importantly, 1202 WUs. I'm sorta confused why my points are lower (I don't care, just curious) since most people with that many points have 200 something WUs. Honestly, I'm more concerned about WUs since in the end, that's what counts.
Angra, you have an insane amount of computers folding. i have to ask, how your electric bill in the summer? Just crazy.

angra, that's how I explain it to friends. Anyone could be the key to misfoldings. And it could be the big picture from all of them. Like when Watson and Crick revealed the structure of DNA, the 'ah ha' moment could happen for the scientific community.

Does anybody have a tutorial for setting up multicore and GPU folding, running at same time?
http://folding.extremeoverclocking.com/user_summary.php?s=&u=353075
Something wrong with these stats, I'm running 3 comps, one 5000 PPD, one 4000 PPD and the other 2000...

Well if you started out with a bunch of errored units, that could be one cause (I've gone through that when the first GPU client was released). Also, the more of the standard client you have, the more units for the amount of points it takes because those units are smaller.

I am sure it is big, but I never get to see it. I do computer research for my day job and a I have a small cluster that I get to do whatever I want with. I have users and a research community that I share it with. My lab foots the bill. They installed a _big_ air conditioner when the cluster arrived.

Dont worry about wear and tear on the gpu. I have run a F@H client on the xt1900 since launch, 24/7 and its still going strong.

I believe, and I don't know if you'll like this answer or not, that a cure for some of these diseases (cancer will be multiple cures, its a different animal) will probably come from the conglomeration of our total work units. The researchers at Stanford must review this information and then point it in specific direction as more and more data comes in. This process will continue and narrow the "field of view" until you can see a probable cure. Every WU is important, regardless if the data is positive or negative. Any data is good data (so long as its acquired properly).

That's awesome! Unfortunately, I don't have access to many computers, nor would my boss let me use them for that purpose; although, I am doing hands on cancer research, so I am also doing my own part. ;)

It might surprise you, but I agree with your assesment all around. The way I describe it is an oversimplification, but there IS a tipping point at which the biologists/chemists have enough data to learn something new and valuable. Any one WU has the chance to be the one that crosses the threshold, and every contribution is important.
Part of the motivation for talk like this, though, is a premeditated decision within this group to emphasize camraderie and breadth of contribution at the expense of intense competition. It's a cultural thing.

Since I wrote the proposal that got the cluster funded, I get to chose what to do with it :). Anyway, we all do our part to whatever degree we are able or motivated. It's all good, big or small. Hands-on research is really great. Some of the computing tech that is set to emerge over the next decade or so is going to allow some very large scale and intense simulation soon - I am optimistic that these 2 disciplines will come together to produce some great results.

MikeB12,
Thanks!
Angra,
I know what you mean. It helps to tell people, "you will be the one to unlock the cure." I won't screw up your message.
I can tell you, just having computers to research papers, documents, protocols, etc is awesome. Other than the physical lab work, we use programs to create vectors for cloning, etc. I'd love to apply this stuff directly to the research I am doing. We do the same thing, but we "fold" by actually changing specific bases and test them (in whatever way is appropriate). Its fun stuff. Although there HAS to be physical experiments, I can see years, decades, even centuries in time saved by just accumulating this raw data to use. Saves people like me more time to guess what might work in a specific situation. Either way, everything we are doing will help in the long run.

I don't know what the max temp is for the the 3800 series, but I'm guessing that's on the high side? Maybe you need an after market cooler. I didn't know that the 3870s could fold. So the 38*0s and higher can? Hmm..... whats your ppd w/ that card?
