Hello,

Wanted to know if the step from a E8400 to an Q9450 is worth it.

I have my E8400 for around 2 months now and can sell it for €125 to someone who wants it quick.

I bought it for €150,- so this is only a €25,- 'loss'.

The Q9450 is now at €220,-.

Is the €100,- more worth the upgrade?

I only do gaming etc. but i do want the CPU to last for 2 or 3 years.
(Heck, 2 months ago i was still using my Intel Pentium IV 631 Cedar Mill  )

Specs below, i game on reso of 1280 or lower, games: FPS or RTS.

Thanks.

if you overclock then the 45nm quads are not the way to go, you'll get far more out of the E8400

If you plan to keep it longer as you said you do, it's a good buy IMO.
Also get it if you plan on doing any DVD and HD ripping in the future.

i never understood why people try to future-proof a PC. if you need a quad core in the future, they're going to be faster and cheaper in the future. why buy a quad you don't need now when you know they'll cost less in a year should you decide you need one?

Because i now can get it cheap and my E8400 isn't worth anything next year ><
And if it was a good upgrade, i could help my friend out since he needs one quick.

If that's your plan a GPU does it ten times faster.

GeForce transcode program beta is already out, GPGPU is coming and will wipe away 50% of the current reasons to buy a quad. ;)

I hope that will be true soon.
But IMO it is only relevant if the tools that come out are used by the encoding scene.
Tools with amateurish capabilities that convert BD content to ipod video don't count.:)
Do you know of anyone who is working on developing a good multipurpouse x.264 encoder that could operate on GPU?
I really hope that somebody will do that.
