I just try Windows Server 2008 x64 .

Wow so fast ... its the speed of Xp with all the tools from vista . You can try it free at microsoft.com (http://www.microsoft.com/windowsserver2008/en/us/trial-software.aspx) and you can renew the lisence 4 time (240 days total).

I will never go back to Vista .

all the drivers for Vista work , all software / games work fine too .

you can disable the some server feature here :

While CPU/MEM/System performance is good, I wish NVIDIA got their asses in gear to get their drivers perform at least par with XP drivers but I've seen no "catching" up really as XP drivers still continue to improve as well so the gap doesn't really grow smaller either. :(

OK it's not like every game runs slower on Vista/2k8 but the huge majority does on my system anyway due to crappy Vista NVIDIA drivers. But yea, only 3D performance is somewhat behind. Today Server 2k8 can put up against XP in non-GPU tests though.

Well to be fair I'm not familiar at all with the OS's at low-level so can't really tell if there's something in Vista/2k8 that simply cause 3D performance to suffer a bit so I shouldn't blame NVIDIA alone if I'm not sure.

yeah as far as a vista kernal goes server 08 is where its at... all the look, functionality, and general feel of vista without all the B.S....

I read somewhere that they completly rewrote the video stack in vista thats why proformance suffers... i got this information when i tried to figure out why my hardware overlay for my tv wasn't working (machine in sig)... it doesn't work in vista because of the new rewritten stack... one of the deal breakers for me using '08 as my main OS

whatever

How do you compare it with W2003 Server ?

Regards !

Aha, makes sense, thanks for the heads up. So yea I guess it's only stupidity or stubborness in "hoping" Vista/2k8 3D performance will catch up XP then at least before XP has been EOL for a while, ie. perhaps I'm already on Windows 7 by then... lol

I don't feel like moving onto that OS as main OS yet either, I will probably keep dualbooting but certainly won't get rid of XP anytime soon.

That's a silly comparision. Try Windows XP with same kernel as XP x64 (minus those compability issues etc) and Windows 2003 and Vista and Server 2008.

Windows 2008 is nowhere alike 2003 unlike you think also XP and Vista are alike.

Well I cant compare 2003 with XP either. Windows server is from another league.
I`m trying to find if this 08 Server is better than 03 Server in games and so on .

Thanks !

I meant as in XP and Server 2003 are more alike each other than Server 2003 and Server 2008 and where Vista and Server 2008 are very similiar. I've tried all 4 OS's and even several times and not only for "short sessions". The Server OS's only comes with server environment oriented features and less services/features enabled by default, especially on the "media" side so IMO XP and Server 2003 are very much alike and Vista and Server 2k8 are also very much alike although Vista is a bit more closer to 2k8 than XP to 2k3 due to differences in kernel comparing XP and 2k3 while Vista and 2k8 uses same (well with SP1 anyway). Well enough about that yaddayadda, to answer your question short and simple: no.

Because 3D performance suffers a bit in 2k8 compared to 2k3 (or XP to Vista). We're not talking huge differences though, I'd say something alike 3~5% (I've actually done extensive benchmarks), but it's difficult to give an exact number as it will vary somewhat on different setups due to different hardware configs and some hardware have better drivers than others etc. Then it varies a lot from game to game, some games are about par or nearly same performing on both OS's while others may see a bigger difference I know UT3 for instance doesn't like the Vista drivers at all performance wise where I can notice some FPS drops in a crowded server in Vista/2k8 where it remains constant 100 fps all the time at same GFX settings in XP. But at least I can say if you're looking for better gaming performance, I wouldn't recommend switching from 03 to 08.

I also tried Server 08, really nice. Vista without lags, lol. But when I tried it (early beta leak, like 2 month ago) I ran into a little performance trouble, especially in 3D.
Still nothing beats XP x64 IMO (which is almost identical to Server 2003, by the way)

I have no performance trouble so far but I have the lastest version with the SP1

Vista 64 bit SP1 and Server 2008 are the same afaik. I use Vista 64 SP1 Ultimate at home and we have a few servers at work with Server 2008 and I don't see much difference aside from the added server functions and no Aero.

no Aero.

 but.. but.. oh man, i was thinking about giving this OS a try - it sounded like it had the performance i need - plus the whole 'ooo, new eye-candy' of crappy vista :(

it has aero... you just have to install it... its a feature! so no worries eye candy is intact!!

I can find no performance difference at all between Vista x64 and Server 2008 X64 enterprise.

Did a clean install of Windows server 2008 x64 enterprise edition and installed the usual drivers and then benched the system.

In winrar .. no difference
In Everest ... no difference.
In 3dMark vantage .. no difference
In TF2 .. no difference.
In racedriver Grid ... no difference.

So I simply can't understand this http://wastingtimewithmikeandari.wordpress.com/2008/02/09/windows-server-2008-10-faster-and-uses-23-the-ram-of-vista/

The only tweak I did on Windows server 2008 was changing the processor scheduling from background services to programs.

Windows Server is light on resources, but that's mainly because not many services is running on default. You need to define a role for the server. For instance superprefetch, themes etc isn't running on default.

But it runs great, but so does Vista x64 after a while :)

I never did get Windows XP x64 to run properly otherwise that would most likely have been my main OS. Now and then I still use Acronis to restore the latest XP x86 install (before I went vista) just to see if it still feels blazing fast ... and it does.
