So, I'm thinking about picking up AoC for a new MMO...

However, and here's the rub, I absolutely HATE, DESPISE, LOATHE (ie don't like :D) PvP.

(If I could ever find a game that didn't feature Gank Squads, Random Acts of A**Hole-ery, etc and that didn't require full-sized teams just to travel safely between towns, then maybe I might eventually some-day change my mind. But it hasn't happened yet . . . .)

Given that, how's the PvE gameplay (big team, smaller team, and solo) of AoC?

(this game does have PvP and non-PvP servers right?)

I've been playing City of Heroes nearly daily for almost 4 years now, and have tried several others (Auto Assault, Guild Wars, Tabula Rasa, Eve, etc), but just haven't found anything else that holds my attention like CoH. After 4 years though, I'm really looking for something new....

There are PVE servers in the game but they seem to be much less populated.

If you want I'll send you a trial key. I'd honestly try it before buying it. I don't like it all that much, but I'm level 19 and still in the noob town so I might end up changing my mind.

Krogan,

If you've got a trial key to spare, yes I'd love to have a chance to try it out before laying out the cash for the full game. Thanks!!

Ehh, looks like they did some false advertising. I got a sheet with the game that says I can get a guest pass on the account page but they are nowhere to be found. I searched the AoC forum and it looks like a lot of people are complaining about this. :shakes:

My opinion: don't get the game yet unless you don't care about $50 going down the drain.

I've been playing for a few months now (beta), and I think it's a pretty sweet game. Graphics are top notch. PVP is fun and if your getting ganked alot you can always roll up in a solo instance for a bit. Quests pay big in exp and items. Leveling isn't too shabby. On the down side though the game really is still a beta. Seems like they fix one problem and two more show up. Yes when you play a pvp game there will always be :banana::banana::banana::banana::banana::b anana:s w/o a doubt but that's just part of the fun. VENGEANCE. All in all I have to say it's a great game though. I played EQ2 for years until I was bored to tears. AoC is a breath of fresh air. My favorite part? The mature content. Nudity, language, and oh yeah the oh so sweet fatalities. Jack Thompson would be proud.

So is there any or will there be any try-before-you-buy demo?

The game is sick. I just want to see how guilds build their own city and such. That's like Mount & Blade's dream.

Graphically it is an amazing game. I am very impressed.

However there are downsides that annoy me alot. Invisible walls, they are everywhere! that and you always get stuck for say catching the corner of a bridge or a stand or anything.

The world also isn't free moveable(one thing i liked about wow).

Other than that a great game. It's very confusing learning even how to chat or why something shouldn't be the way it is(menu or gui related).

I like it, it not permanent for me personally there seems to be a lot more depth in games like wow or eve or ffxi but yeah its still enjoyable.

Yeah. Chat is a mess very annoying. So many bugs. Prolly take a year to iron them all out. I use /stuck about 5 times a night. lol.

From everything I've read it sounds like it would be best to wait until a few patches are released. Sounds like a lot of technical issues, but that goes for any new game, especially a large MMO.

All the reviews are saying it's nothing new in regards to gameplay. Standard questing, levelling, etc. Supposedly it has a pretty weak and uninvolving craft system, but hopefully that's resolved somehow in the future. Graphics are excellent, but that won't keep players around for a long time, considering how many hours have to be put into these kinds of games.

I'm not an MMO player myself, so no dissapointment for me, but Age of Conan sounds like it's not living up to the hype thus far.

so if you get the game now and play casually .. 2-3 hours a day, you wont encounter anything gamebreaking if you just stick to questing and grinding.

dont do crafting just yet, its not too broken in terms of the actual crafting, its just the items that suck

by the time youre 80 if you play casually and enjoy the game it will be the best mmo in all likelyhood.

agreed. Overall a decent game definatly is better than most games. However as much as i hate comparing other games to wow their crafting system is crap compared to wow's.

One thing i do expect of an mmo nowadays is depth beyond just creating a big world you and your friends can hack other people to hell in.

They got it partially right with the feats but hello... wow talents the exact same thing really? haha yeah.

They are patching the major issues that seem to be needing fixing and adding things into the game that the public demands... it will keep me around for a month or two or three longer however i am not going to stick around if the game doesn't improve. I'll save my money and wait...

Please don't ever make out that WoW brought anything new or innovative to the MMO world apart from the Warcraft and Blizzard brands.

Please don't ever make out that WoW brought anything new or innovative to the MMO world apart from the Warcraft and Blizzard brands.

and please don't ever make out they didn't. If they didn't do anything new why are they so popular? They brought a clean intuitive UI that's third party modifiable... have you seen that done before?

They brought a finess to combat that isn't quite the same in other games.

Just because you hate it don't ignore it. I personally think they have done a lot for the mainstream mmo's even though i don't like the game much myself. It is easy for a child to pick up yet in some ways deep enough to keep some veteran gamers around for awhile to come.

I am however not starting an arguement on why you hate wow or why it sucks or is good etc. I just think it has its own place in good and bad.

Oh PS. I quit conan last night. I went to the new town, no voicing, hardly any noises at all. Feels like i'm in a ghost town and the quests are so boring. The game looks great but till they fix some stuff and balance it this game will sit in my closet.

You do realize that WoW didn't bring out about the modding of UI's, Dark Age of Camelot was around earlier than WoW and that was available, I will say that WoW has made some leaps and bounds in the modding area but don't say they orginated this.

WoW's combat system sucks, im playing now becasue their is no mmo that has competition aka daoc :). AoC will eventually fail because funcom support has been terrible in the past, unless they have made some major changes AoC will flop.

In all honesty it doesn't matter about the game mechanics, its about the community. If you can keep subscribers wanting more any game will be successful.

I know they are bringing back Daoc:orgins this summer because they are postponing warhammer most likely (lolz) but until then im suffering through WoW with some buddies,

i played closed beta for AoC and the combat system was awesome....until you learned you had to hit the same buttons over and over......reminds me of A+A+B+RIGHT+LEFT+DOWN......

Funcom support seems pretty good thus far, they are quick at fixing issues and the game is quite bug free for being brand new. Games that are 4 years old are just as bad or worse in terms of bugs.

its a really bad camp fest right now, way worse than wow was, by far. Wouldnt be so bad if were in the higher levels, but even in the low level gaming it exists with no way of escaping it. 75% of the quests levels 8-15 are in some instanced area being camped by higher level griefers, also, if the classes stay around the same power at higher levels, distance casters will own the world this game takes place in, some balancing work is needed.

To the poster above, support seems fair actually, and from what their plans are for the future, if they listen, fix some things, add some better balancing and fix the grieving issue, this could out to be an amazing PVP game, so many people compare this to wow, dont, while wow is ok at pvp, pve gameplay is where the fun in wow is, while it seems, while AOC has pve content for the pve lovers its mostly based for pvp, so its really what cup of tea is yours, pve- its what makes wow amazing to me, as an ex council member of a very successful guild in wow, Invictus. Wow is trying to raise the bar and improve pvp and leveling process though, they are making little changes after changes. Wrath of the lich king seems to be yet another amazing move forward for wow.

I think i will be playing both.

I agree. AoC has been fun.

Warning though. If you play AoC you will HATE combat in any other MMO.

Seriously, the combo's and fatalities make the combat fun...not to mention mounted combat.

Classes are fun, and the models are some of the best I have seen. Quest are very hand-held, but it doesnt detract from the game.

Pretty game, and personally I have not had ANY issues with the game. Running at max setting, max view distances, and runs very smooth.

That brings me back some warm memories of my days in the general beta. I used to run a notorious ganking-guild called the Pictish Ganker Association, a ganking guild with style. We all wore pictish feather skulls (a cracked human skull with red feathers attached to the top of it, which one wears as a mask) and usually ganked our victims in groups. Because we preferred to prey on lowbies we all stayed on the tutorial island of Tortage. Our weapon of choice was usually the rusty nasty-looking pictish pickaxe and fatality moves of course.

Even though people rarely managed to organize themselves against us, it was still possible for them to avoid us by switching instances. I still remember that one night when there was 13 of us online and we divided ourselves into three different gank-squads, each covering one of the three available instances of White Sands questing islands where PvP was enabled. Not a single person could get through for at least an hour.

Anyways, the only reason I didn't start playing AoC was because I don't do MMORPGs anymore. It is a great MMO and all I can wish is that it had been realeased in 2005 instead, so that I could spend those 4 months of my life on AoC instead of WoW, cause it pwns WoW. It's got great graphics, good music, nice quests with a pretty alright mainquest-story, lots of future potential and of course an excelent and revolutionary combat-system that is actually fun with exciting fatality moves ( especially if it is a poor helpless lowbie that you nail to the floor with your battle-axe, just to pull it out and finish him by crushing his throat with it after you've laughed at him).

Rangers are the best PVP class in the game.

I Love PVP my HoX is 114 and 39. I have a combo that takes like 80% of there health. basicaly a rapefest when we got our randie ganking group on :D:D:D

Well if ask me I would say ToS is best class for PVP atm. They can nuke the opponent and heal themselves at the same time.

To lvl 80 Ranger, my lvl 80 guardian can kill easily. Everytime I duel with Ranger I win with my Guardian. Just ran around them, let them use their all stamin in first 3-4 mins. and once their stamin is 0 they are corpse, 3 combos with charge and they are dead.

Demonlogist are quite dangerouse in PVP too and they are fasted leveling class.

Ranger used to be best class in the begining when all other class were broken. But once FC started fixing other class, Ranger became helpless. Still Rangers are good at PVE.

I have a level 60 ToS and am horrible at PVP with a tos. my only problem with them is if you get charged/stunned/knocked down your :banana::banana::banana:ed. considering the best spell takes like 2 seconds to cast and same with all the heals. on top of that your super squishy. so if i want to run around in circles i have to wait 7 seconds for charged blast. if you are group ganking ToS are great as long as the people dont realise that you are doing all the damage and go kill you first :D

Demo's are only good agaisnt casters imo. since a warrior/solider class can dodge those massive AoE attacks. and if the Demo uses lightning as there main they are morons.

LOL

Sorry im not a pro age of conan gamer. but i have a level 60 ToS and a 30 HoX. Rangers are always the ones who destroy me. they can stun me from super far away. then slow me down and by the time i get in there range to cast or if get close enough to hit them with my sword with my HoX im half dead. If you can get the first hit then you should be okay, but since rangers can walk around stealth without losing stamina thats a rare occasian for me getting the first hit.

Ive never been 70+ so maybe as soon as you hit 70 everyone gets anti-stun/knockback feats making rangers useless.

Arent' they nerfed charge, atm charge dont do any damange but thats bug that gonna fix it. FC has nerfed when soldiers used to perfrom combo before charge, then charge and execute combo. So, charge is not big threat now. ToS still have VJ, main emergency heals. Investing feats in Column lightning and improved cobra snare makes lot of difference.
