Ok, so I've just recieved my Wolfdale E8300 from Scan (UK) but it only sells as an OEM chip. Can't realy do any major overclocking at this moment as I have snapped two of the mounting screws on my GeminII, but I've got it under a Retail Q6600 HSF. The real overclocking will commence tomorrow when my Thermalright IFX-14 comes...
Tests at stock speed of 2.833Ghz and 0.975V set in bios

Finaly the IFX-14 Arrived...
This thing is a proper pain in the backside to install. Had to take some Oxanid half way through the ordeal...

is it just me or is this chip really nice?

Well, they cost only £100 and clock like mad..
The VID is 1.225V , but it clocks all the way upto 3.8Ghz on stock Volts..
I think it's amaizing results for a mid range cpu and @ only 1.275V
I picked up this chip from Ewiz for $160 and an DX38BT Bonetrail for $150. For just over $300, it should be fairly solid and allow for some Crossfire action with some 4850s soon
I'll post my results when I get around to putting everything together :)

but i mean if this can reach 4 ghz on air, and an e8400 also at 4ghz .. what will the diff be if the rest is all the same?
I guess none..but $20 cheaper..
but i guess if you get the e8400, there will be more headroom

More headroom, more cache (nice for some apps or benches) and in general (if you get a good one) same clocks at a lower voltage...

The lower multiplier requires a higher FSB. The higher FSB means more heat and voltage. It seems that with a decent motherboard, you'll be able to find the CPU's max clock. I'm not sure if the extra voltage on the Norhtbridge would negate the $20 savings through the electric bill at the end of the year?
I figured $20 more was nothing at all to spend on a CPU.
The only difference is the multiplier. I don't know if they bin faster chips as higher models. I think it is more of supply and demand that they make a certain chip into a certain model.
I have a E8300 that I got from eWiz for $160

vid = 1.225v
4GHz @ 1.36v
4.08GHz @ 1.39v
4.1GHz @ 1.405v
Have not gone any higher since I am pushing my DX38BT a lot,...which isnt a board quite well known for its FSB ability :) . No, its not the great wolfdale chip, in fact it might be considered a dud by some. Takes a little more volts to get to 4GHz than others I have seen, but I did get to where I wanted with the chip on 24/7 air usage. My temps are 59C under load using an Enzotech Extreme-X

What's a safe voltage for a wolfdale 24/7? I currently can't get my 8400 past 3.6 without going over ~1.35 :(
1.4v on air I heard, if your temperatures are good.
That sucks about your e8400, mine might become like that if the +.05v voltage needed for stability kicks in after initial usage (which has happened to many people) :(

What's a reasonable videocard to throw down with this badboy?

Depends on ya budget mate and on which game resolution you play... if it's at or below 1280 x 1024 : 9800GT* (starting from 120 dollars) or ATI 4850 series (160 dollars) ... Above 1280 x1024 I would go straight 4870 or GTX 260 (both 260 dollar region) or higher.... Make sure your Powersupply can handle ya new Gfx card !!
And clock that CPU up to 4ghz to give it some power to work with...

I wish we could combine these threads, there are like how many "OFFICAL" threads on this forum... Its getting so clutterd with nonsense..

I believe there should be an "official" thread at least for every popular part. Should be in stickies perhaps.

But there should be one E8200-8500 thread, not 4 and then 1 for the e8600 for 5, there are like 10 Asus threads also, this forum is becoming really hard to navigate now

Asus threads aren't the real problem, it's the ridiculous number of pointless gigabyte threads that is the problem. How many threads do you need for a semi decent board? Sure, one guy with a cherry picked board hit 670 FSB on a cherry picked board sent to him for review, about 3 other boards are also good, the rest a dodgey retail achieving nothing special at all, and a few boards have just died and killed the cpu along with it, and now there's about 10 threads for the damn things as if their so great. Crazy.
I know its for the "gigabyte competition' thing, but its made a real mess of the forum.

What about 500+ fsb, or 4.0Ghz + ? Your temps are at the limit with your IFX-14?. Can you test it with 1.3+ V?
Until mine arrives.
