View Full Version : Whats the Performance Limiter?

The system bus can only handle so much, so once you reach certain levels on the CPU FSB to the Memory Bus, isn't there a point in which overclocking the RAM more doesn't help much?

Such as, I have a P4 2.4B it is running 157MHz(x18) right now, my CURRENT memory runs 418 or something. With the x4 multi onthe CPU Bus I have 628MHz FSB.

Does my memory need to his that same level to reach my CPU's limit? Cuase only so much information can pass at one time and stuff right?

My new MB supports Dual Channel, now if I were to buy x2 new sticks of RAM the BUs is doubled right? Say x2 sticks of DDR433 in dual channel is running at double the speed of 866MHz right? Therefore going above and beyond my CPU Bus and not actually doing that much more for my performance since my CPU bus is only at 628?

I think I just went crosseyed:idea:

I think I went cross eyed too. your mem is still only doing 433 in dual channel mode. Dual channel only changes the bus from 64bit to 128 bit, allowing the processor to access bigger chunks of ram at one time. (I think, please correct me if I'm wrong, someone, anyone)
If you can get your mem to 314 1:1 (which is what you will have to do to get 628DDR) you are indeed Xtreme. Your mem doesn't really have anything to do with your CPU topping out. Unless your Mem is topped out too, but with those 3500 sticks you should be able to go quite a ways. Just feed them some voltage.

Sadly, my board only seems to allow me to up the vDIMM "+.1" or something, and only that much, so the max I can do is 2.6v.

You say 314 1:1, you mean to get my memory running below spec? It is running 418MHz right now.... what is with the 1:1 divider? As in CPU:RAM?

I am just trying to figure this out, 157x2=314MHz RAM with
157x4=628Mhz CPU
Sorry, I can't figure outwhat you were getting to.

Also I though the bit rate doubling, also doubles the speed? ehehe, I used to think I knew alot about this, but now I see I have much to learn to become a jedi master :P

I'm still learning myself. I was just saying that at your current speeds your ram isn't holding you back.

You asked about getting your ram equal to your system bus which would be the 628, if you get it that far you would indeed be a jedi master.

and bit rate doubling does essentaily double your speed, kinda, but it has no effect on your ram Mhz.

The thing that confuses me is that the CPU has 4 pipelines or whatever you want to call it (quad pumped at 133MHzx4=533MHz Effective FSB). DDR is double, so only like 133MHzx2=266Mhz or PC2100, and so on like that.

So if my CPU runs at 157, I guess that to be synchronous with my RAM and CPU my RAM would also have to be 157, which owuld only be half the effective bandwitdh. OR Perhaps I need to double it like you said and become a Jedi Master LOL.
