View Full Version : Need Help For An Idiot: RAID 0 Install on a Vista System

Hi all. I'm in a bit of a pickle and I need some help. The interwebs have been failing me the past couple of days and I haven't found a proper solution to my issue.

I built a Vista 64 system 2 months ago and recently I purchased a HDMI capture card (Intensity Pro fyi). I use an Asus Rampage Formula mobo, which is the X48 equivalent of the X38 Maximus Formula but supports both DDR2 and DDR3. The mobo has the ICH9R Intel RAID controller chip on it so I wanted to use that instead of going out and buying a separate RAID controller. To compliment my new capture card I went out and purchased 2 750gb hard drives which I intended to install as a RAID 0 configuration. However, as I went into the BIOS and set up my system to do the RAID and set it up in the Intel Matrix Storage Manager (IMSM) and rebooted the system I would get a subsequent BSOD as soon as it started loading Windows. I would therefore have to go back into the BIOS to disable the RAID and reconfigure the boot priority as for some reason my secondary Maxtor drive kept defaulting as the primary drive. Wierd.

When I go into the device manager the drives are there clear as day but in the main file directory they are not present alongside my C, D, and E:\ drives. I have attempted to install the latest version of the IMSM drive but it comes up every time in the installation process that my system does not meet the minimum requirements. Wth?

At this point I just don't know what to do. Again, I'm trying to install the RAID as separate drives and NOT have to reinstall Vista; something that every article I can find on Google wants to do the exact opposite of. If anyone can get back to me as to how to fix this I'd certainly appreciate it. Thank you all in advance.

I've installed the latest drivers I can find but like I said the Intel Matrix Storage Drivers refuse to install. I try to do a ICH9R driver disk but I don't have a floppy drive and it'll only allow me to do so that way. Is there a way to do it on a USB stick?

I updated the BIOS but that had no effect. Like I said I tried to reinstall the IMSM but I can't get it to do so. I'm afraid your going to have to speak to me as if I'm a 8 year old who doesn't know any better; I know the basic terms but I don't know how to properly implement advanced stuff like this.

Forget it, I figured it out on my own. I've bought a PCI-E X1 RAID controller that works just fine. Could have used the suggestion earlier though...

Ungrateful much? That is one solution to the problem, however, I can tell you, not the most efficient, guaranteed there was more to a solution than simply that.

Well I don't mean to sound ungrateful but when no one responds to your issue that you are completely stumped on in a community of near experts (compared to my dimwitted self) you'd figure someone would have a suggestion as to what I can do. The fact of the matter is that I got more help from a manufacturer than I did here and that's saying something.

It just would have been nice if I could have saved $120 and a twenty mile drive to and from if I could have gotten a little help. This was a very time-sensitive thing that needed to be resolved as I am going to video shoot my brother's wedding on Wednesday and I couldn't wait for help.

Again, I'm sorry if I sound upset but quite frankly I am. Thank you Zanzibar for trying anyway.

Ha, I find your expectation for help to be funny. You came on a community forum first post and expect immediate results. The irony is that every week, no every day 20 people come here and do the same. How many times do you think Zanzabar has answered the same exact question?

Don't complain about advice that is given out of graciousness. Your should only be directed towards yourself rather than towards anyone on here who was simply trying to help you. And don't worry this isn't about trolling, this goes towards the whole nature of this community and this board.

vista still doesnt have the right drivers ?
ffs

it comes up every time in the installation process that my system does not meet the minimum requirements. Wth?
this sounds familiar, although by slipstreaming xp (NLITE 1.4.5 & 'driver packs dp_base') i was able to update lots of drivers and everything seems to work hunky dory from the get go....

but i thought vista was supposed to have put all (or most) RAID (and or "mass storage") drivers in the OS disk...?

anyway a separate raid card is supposed to be better.

maybe the problem was just a bios setting  or else a missing driver...

disconnecting all drives except the raid set may have helped while installing a raid 0 OS with the ich9R.

No doubt there are plenty of people who have installed vista on RAID0 ICH9R who may have commented in time...a pity i would have liked to have heard a solution :/
