If so, can you still overclock your cpu?

For some reason, server 2008 will not allow me to overclock my cpu the least bit. if i do, it won't boot - or even attempt to get to the desktop. It just seems odd that i could overclock my cpu on vista(32bit) to 3.4GHz (stable), but if i go past the 2.4GHz, windows 2008 server (64bit) won't let me install, or even overclock after it's installed (after installing it @ the default 2.4GHz).

Is that just the way of server 2008, or is something borked with my setup?

I think something may be borked. My Server 08 x32 rig (1200MHz Celeron) overclocks fine to 1550MHz. Makes good for bashing P4s around in benchmarks.

Hmm... still seems odd. I can see if my max stable OC changed some, but to not allow me to overclock at all seems weird.

Anyone out there running server 2008 64-bit?

EDIT: Nevermind, it seems something is up with my system. By messing with the mem settings, i was able to get further and further into booting to desktop. But that's kinda odd, since i had them dialed in in the past. Different operating system though, vista 32bit vs server 2008 64bit.

but besides that weirdness, i also found another one. If i set my cpu to ~3.4GHz now, my board doesn't see my hard drive anymore... says insert boot disk. Tried a different sata channel, no good. I think my MB is messed up. Or it just can't handle 4 memory sticks... which would still be odd that if that was the cause of it not being able to see my hard drive (even though it is kinda new/different then my older setup 1x seagate 500mb vs my old 2 x raptor 74gb raid 0 setup).. anyway.. time to start with a clean slate (bios setting wise), and/or buy a new board.

the intel SB drivers are messed up on your copy, try installing at stock, updating with intel then oc

Well I sorted out some of my issues. It was the memory settings. While ago went from 2 x 1gb firestix to 2 x 2gb skills, and didn't have any issues when running vista. Then one day when i was playing with server 2008 beta, i couldn't get it to run overclocked. So I set it aside. Then a week or so ago, i saw the gskills for $85, so i decided to get another set. So i revisted server 2008, (64-bit cause wanted to use my full 8 gigs) and installed and ran it at default cpu speed, with mem @ 800mhz.

Late last night, after trying every combination of drive strength, VTT, voltage settings, ect, I noticed my ram was running at 4 4 4 in cpuz, even though the they should have been running 5 5 5 according to SPD. So I manually set them in the bios, and my problems went away :)

Either the Overclock or the Memory Settings are not stable in this case. The OS itself doesn't care about FSB/Timings and so on if they are stable.

But!

A different OS (be it 32bit to 64bit and so on) might overclock less due to being able to further stress a component.

whatever

Performance wise, compared to Windows 2003 Server ?

I`m thinking for an OS upgrade.

I`m thinking for an OS upgrade.

When I set out to bench my new rig I installed 32bit 2008 Ent. Once I got it setup more like a workstation and tweaked the network stack (silly auto tune) I was impressed with how snappy it was even with the aero bits turned on it was way faster than vista on the same box (make note Vista 32/64 drivers work on it) It did score lower in DX9 stuff as I expected it would (so did Vista) but all in all I felt it did better in storage and network speed than XP64 (Which is 2003 x64). For info to make 2008 more like a workstation less server like try here http://www.win2008workstation.com/wordpress/
Also a good site to help find out what works or doesn't as well as workarounds for some software/hardware that doesn't want to install.

If you want/need some benchmarks for disk/network or something else let me know I'll try and accommodate them as I reinstall and image the box :D
I have 2008 32/64 all flavors as well as XP 32/64 and Vista 32/64 my next rebuild is 2008 x64 want to see how that plays with a few things then back to 2008 32 Ent w/PAE to make sure about a few other things
