pay to play games suck, just my opinion D:
rather play hellgate london, whose devs were smart enough to make it pay to play and also free for those who dont want "bonus content"
But eh, i don't bother with time consuming games so much.

Hellgate London can easily be called "the worst pay to play scheme in MMO history." Period.
There was a tremendous amount of hype when the game released back in October 2007. For a few days... After that it turned out to be a huge let down, and in no way it can be called an MMO. The people who got a founder subscriptions (a $150 lifetime subscription + $50 for a game of course = $200) will never get their money's worth. Developers promised a lot when it came out, but did basically nothing. Soon enough it will be A YEAR since the game released and it is still in terrible shape.
Here's a [funny] post from Flagship's forum. In no way it represents the reality but it does show the reactions of people towards Flagship and Hellgate London.
@ ChaosMonkey
Pshhh...
I bought Founder accts for my ENTIRE FAMILY!!!
Thats right, I was so hyped up I got them for all my cousins and distant relatives and grandparents and all that goodness. I spent thousands of dollars on this game. THOUSANDS!!!
I haven't touched this game in over a month, my entire family has disowned me and I'm now dirt poor after selling my only method of transportation in order to afford the founder accts and thus losing my job in the process.

A-fking-greed. FSS really dicked up the spiritual successor to Diablo II so badly. Hell, they could have simply re-made Diablo II, same classes, skills, weapons, monsters, and levels, but used their engine and updated textures/tiles and I would have been STOKED! I would have sung praise to the heavens over remaking a game that stole my soul for 3 years but instead I look at H:L and shake my head.

I picked the game up today, however the CPU that I ordered off Ebay seems to be taking forever. I might try to load it on my laptop for now just to get a character created and get a rough idea for the game.

update... im 36 now =P... and i have been playing WAY TOO MUCH, i stayed up for 48 hours the day i got early access, thats where i got most of my leveling done. but now im sorta just foolin around waiting for my friends to catch up... so far this game rocks. i LOVE the new feel to it as opposed to eq, eq2, and wow that i used to play. i HATED the cartoony kiddie feel of WoW and i got sick and tired of the same ol'e fantasy basis of all the current mmos (elves/gnomes/dwarves/orcs... etc). in this game you just feel downright dirty all the time... be it covered in blood from a recent decapitation or topless female assassins slicing your arms off.. haha (happened a few times). Awesome game... we need to start an XS conan guild on Bluesteel!! =P

I can't wait to play it. Lesson learned, never sell your CPU before you get your new one in the mail. To further that, never order your CPU from Canada and expect it to come in USPS Priority speeds.
I'm glad to see the game is as good as the hype. I'll be in the game hopefully by the weekend.

New craphics :) i'm an old school daoc player and use to play with the old graphics up until i finished my new computer.....the new server will be Pre Shrouded Isles, Old Frontiers, basically when the game was fun. When it forced a bottle neck of 100 Albs/100 Mids/100 Hibs to square off :), i got into the whole 8 vs 8 thing after old frontiers (which 8v8 was never really adopted untill NF) (have 4 r11's and an assortment of r10 and below).....it should be fun though i know alot of people will come back if they remarket it, that was the downfall of the game when they pulled it from store shelves and only made it purchasable online......if they release it like a package deal with warhammer i have a feeling warhammer won't do as good as Daoc. Warhammer is lacking atm

DAoC still has had the best PvP (RvR) in my MMO experience. I'm not talking about Frontiers. I'm talking about 4am relic raids with about 400 people in a single zone and your guild phone chain waking you up. That game was great through SI but ToA killed it for me. Hopefully WH will end up being DAoC2.
For now I'm looking forward to Conan.

I totally forgot about guildies calling me hahahahaha (glad i'm not the only one) but yes atm warhammer is losing to AoC (which im not a fan of either, i don't like the interrupt system (daoc actually required you to pay attention and move way from something hitting you) thats holding back games from being really goodddddd. ToA ruined daoc because they made it so hard, now everything is easyily doable with a grp, or 2 people lol and you are able to buy everything with bounty points (earned from killing people)

I just got the game and my first impressions aren't all that great.
At first, the combat seems to be fun and refreshing, just like everyone seems to be saying, but after an hour or so I must say that the gameplay is just button smashing, just with 3 keys. The graphics is the best in the MMO class but it is far behind Crysis and most newer titles out there. I maxed out everything with 2AA and it looks all right, but the performance is very poor. I get about 20 FPS @ 1680x1050 which seems to be on the verge of playability. I have an 8800GT, 2GB of RAM, and a Q6600 running at 3.06GHz all on Windows XP. Just for comparison, in Crysis my average FPS is around 32FPS (same resolution), which is playable. To make it worse, graphical glitches seem to be everywhere, with XYZ coordinates screwed up (for example, a sword carried on your back is one foot away from your back), textures not loading, and clothing problems on NPCs ("nipple flashes" on NPCs?).
Quests seems to be quite generic (pick up 5x of abc, save npc efg, stuff like that).
UI is okay, I really don't know why people are complaining about it so much. It could be better since it feels kind of "archaic" right now (like something you'd see in early stages in development...). But it is functional.
Hopefully it's just the beginning and behind all of this is a great, quality game.

Edit for Spelling (need more coffee at work) !!!
in comparison with WoW and EQ2..
i actually like the EQ2 graphics more then AOC.. for some reason, WoW is very fluid but the worst of the 3 in terms of graphics
gameplay is more fluid then in EQ2 , kind of like in WoW
the game is more instanced then WoW, about like EQ2 just a little more

I am playing a level 51 necromancer now. It is pretty fun, I have been playing since the game was released. I like the graphics really love that you can PvP everywhere. My only complaints about the game right now is that it was rushed and still needs a lot of fixing... including performance. I can get pretty good fps on my system, but sometimes the fps spikes.. One thing to be noted is that on the 3870 series of cards, the GPU doesn't seem to be utilized 100%. There are a lot of threads about it on the official AoC forums. Hopefully a driver hotfix comes out or an AoC patch.
I am playing on the Tyranny PvP server. Xtyphoon in game.

I really like the combat, it is nice to actually be fighting unlike other mmorpg where you just click auto attack and a few spells. Makes you pay attention and not just mouse click all day. Swords through the heart and chopping off heads and stuff is cool too.
I also run on max everything with an OCed 3870 and Xeon 3110 @ 4.2Ghz. FPS is good and graphics look great.

Anyway I need input from you guys on your specs and how demanding this game is.
A co-worker who's rig I built is already addicted to the game and needs a video card upgrade (has 3850 512 now; mainly played WoW at the time). Needs 1650x1080 and cpu is an e2160 on a P965 DS3. Presently at stock though that could be changed of course. Only a 430w PS. Would a GTS 512 cut it high settings?
Thanks :)

well, the game is pretty demanding... as i allrerady stated, the game doesnt support corssfire yet so i am forced to run with just one 3870... and i am able to runt he game basically max settings (AA and shadows turned off) and i get a pretty steady 30-70 fps. but im mainly awaiting the 4870 for this game =P especially for when the dx10 version gets released at the end of the year.
i will run max with like 8xaa and 16xaf with shadows turned on as soon as gt200 comes out... im gonna upgrade to 64bit.. its gonna rock
right now im just running semi max with medium shadows no aa

Go make a demonologist, then try saying that again. That class sucks some massive balls.
As an extremely hardcore MMO player I'd say this game plays as good or better than the hype. There is plenty of content (quests/zones/gear) to be had unlike most other MMOs at launch and servers are 100% stable and lagfree. While graphics are the least most important factor in a MMO to me...they are impressive enough (for a MMO) to be mentioned. On 8800GTs in SLI & Q6600 combo overclocked I run around 120FPS in dungeons and 50-80FPS outdoors with max settings. I turn off occulusion and parallel mapping to keep the frames up without a noticeable difference to me visually.
The cons, which by no means should stop you from trying this game are:
1) Running over hilly terrain is a PITA with auto-run. You have to jump to keep your character moving over rough objects.
2) While the storyline of quests are better than most games (on par with Oblivion), they are mostly the same ole kill X mobs and return to quest giver.
3) Dungeon bosses are too easy at the low levels. My groups have never wiped in dungeons due to challenging mobs. Granted, I am the healer and kick ass. ;)

I got this game and am loving it so far (level 17) but am curious about something that perhaps you high-levels can enlighten me on.
Is there supposed to be a PVE "endgame" like WoW with dragons and huge demons and whatnot or is the endgame basically all PVP and player-made cities, castles and going to war with other player groups with siege engines and rhinos and crap like that? Does the PVE portion of the game basically "end" at a certain level and you're forced to PVP for experience? Just curious.

I beta tested AoC and I can tell you that many MMORPGs simple are not impressed. The game will probably not survive after Warhammer is released.
I've been playing MMORPGs for 11 years and this game just doesn't have anything to do or accomplish when you get high level. I see AoC converting over to free to play, pay to upgrade path that some of the other nice looking flops.
Game is great for 2 hours of mindless solo play... it just doesn't have anything to keep you around like EQ, DAOC or WoW. So it's current subs will wain considerably over the next few months.

Have you been running them on Epic? They are much harder if you are the correct level and they provide much better drops :)
I picked up AOC the day it dropped and I am loving it. I get lost on the graphic godness of the game. I also LOVE all the different fatality moves that I can perform. I mean who doesn't love a Barbarian swinging his 2H ax in a 360 degree rotation only to have it decapitate his enemy? It never gets old...LOL the best part is I have like 10 different combos that all result in deiiferent fatalities :)
santiagodraco
06-30-2008, 07:52 PM
Hmm, I'm pretty sure you don't have 10 different combos that result in fatalities :D
The game is, stale already. So buggy and poorly designed that it's going to fail very quickly if they don't make some improvements.
Graphics? Fantastic. Combat, feels "unique" but Funcom's designers are idiots... combos go from 1 button press at level 1-10 to 3 button presses around 40-50+ and I don't know if it increases from there since I canceled my account before the first charge.
I'll watch for improvements but for now the game isn't even close to being open beta ready.

I played for 2 weeks, didn't play for 2 weeks afterwards... canceled on the 5th week. I forget my level, but i played an assassin (which are severely gimped). But my reason for quitting is due to funcom's direction with improving broken stuff, or lack of direction. there is zero official presence on their forums, in regards to problems and game balance issues. Having played Anarchy Online for many years, when it first came out... This is typical of funcom. maybe i'll try it again in a couple more months, but right now, it felt like i was paying to beta test a watered down version of what the game was supposed to be.
For any people thinking of playing, don't pick assassin class.. be a healer, they can dps, and heal... and kill most classes...
