I had a BSOD pointing to "nvis_dis.dll" (or what it was, driver issue) yesterday. I rebooted the computer and then I got the:

"missing ntoskrnl.exe" error.

Oh no!

Tried rebooting four times with ipod and various memory sticks detached, and still got "missing ntoskrnl.exe".

Got really depressed over the fact that I would have to reinstall everything (never gotten the repair to work really) so I played "GTA IV" on my ps3 for 30 minutes instead.
Then I tried to reboot the comp for a last time, and it worked?

What happened?

I run on Genuine WinXP64 with a DFI Lanparty X48-T2R and e6850.

Hoi, i had this type of error but it wasn't with that exe, it was with HAL.DLL.
I'd restart, BSOD, restart, BSOD but then leave it for a few minutes and turn it back and on whooooooloa, boots :')
Personally i put that down to a sh1tty O/S install and i think my HDD is kut too,
but back-up mate while you still can, you never know the next time it's going to go for good.

Take note of kingzl3y and do a back up. This is indicative of a failing hard disk amongst other things, bad memory being another possibility. I would do a memcheck and a full harddisk surface scan test to see if it is either of these components.

Orthos "Stress CPU" @ priority 6 or more, for minimum of 12 hours
Orthos "Blend" @ priority 6 or more, for minimum of 12 hours
Start -> Run -> cmd -> "chkdsk /R" (without the quotes, then restart computer to run it), then review the log and see if your drive has any bad sectors. If it does, toss out the drive and go buy a new one. Bad sectors are a sign of a drive showing it's age and/or abuse.

Don't argue with me on this one, just do it. You can thank me later for the reliability.
