This is something along the lines of the boring and often repeated threads of XP v VISTA, but one that I have not yet seen, and I wonder if anyone has anything to say about it...
Under Vista, files that are saved out, are bigger than the same files on XP.
This was brought to light with one simple thing...
I am working on my brothers website... Every so often, he sends me a picture from his Digital camera, through EMails, they are massive and I have to shrink them down, I do it a simple way and just grab the lot and open them all up in MSPAINT and one by one, I simply shrink them to 25%
Now, in every single one, the pics have ended up being around the 70k mark ( Smallest is 64k, biggest is 88k ) and a few days ago, I put Vista64 Back on to my main PC for another trial run and he sent me through a few more pics, and good, this will give me another go with CuteFTP etc, but I noticed that the pics this time are about the 155K mark??? - Twice the size as the others when they are done on XP64?
Anyway, I copied the files to a flash drive, stuffed them onto an XP64 PC and opened and saved them in MSPAINT on there, and they were shrunk down to about half the size as normal.
Now, shrunk, the pics are 708x532, there is no particular reason for this size, they are just shrunk from what his camera does them, down to 25% and this is a comfy size to use.
I have thought that since they are JPeGs then it could be the compression ratio maybe? but then, XP64 will shrink the Vista saves but when I try it the other way round, they dont get bigger? - if the compresion ratio was set, then they would indeed expand a little wouldnt they? - not sure?
Anyway, Im waffling, so can anyone verify or explain why this is the case?
Basically as I said, saved stuff in Vista, is bigger than the saved stuff in XP... Therefore it will waste a lot more Disk space with sticking to Vista!
