I'm curious why everyone specifies using Zerex as a cooling additive rather than just any antifreeze?

More for corrosion protection than anything else and I don't use either because I have no mixed metals in the loop. Go with plain distilled water and something like Feser dye for color if you want it, unless you have mixed metals in your loop. Maybe a drop or two of bioside like PT Nuke from Petra's, but I don't even use that anymore.

Agreed, I got a bottle of it never opened just sitting here. I have no mixed metals so why bother. Just plain distilled with a couple drops of pt nuke.

I use:
99% Distilled water
1 oz Pentosin antifreeze
1-2 drops of Aquarium Algaecide
Plus I have a silver rod in each res.
I know, I know, I am Excessive Compulsive. :D

IMO using ANY anti-freeze is potentially harmful to your pumps/temps. You are trying to push a more viscous fluid with your little pump.
Maybe I'm off base here, but living in Houston, TX, we don't worry about sub-freezing temps in our living rooms...

Really? I always read antifreeze hurts temps a bit, but does provide a lubricant property for the pump, and supposedly increases the MTBF.
Now I'm confused...

True, it will hurt your temps, but how did you fiqure it would lubricate your pump ???
Post a link to where you read that it increases MTBF...
Guarantee you, anti-freeze increases viscosity, therefore probably decreases MTBF...

Anti-freeze is a lubricant, but in automotive applications
It wont have too much of an effect on pc cooling sys,s.

You ever hit a patch of antifreeze on the highway while riding a motorcycle you'll find out just how slick that stuff is.......................

What's the silver rod do ?

The silver would act as an anode.

I got a whole plate of it 10" x 14 " x 3/16th's thick
got it at the salvage yard for $5 bucks they didn't know what it was .
I knew as I was a Jeweler in a past life time & I know silver when I see it !

Silver is also a bactricide

I use it for the biocide properties.

I should cut the silver sheet up into small slivers soo ppl can dangle them in their reseviors
PM me if interested
