You've got yourself a new folder! After looking around and realizing that I can't take my points from the old team with me (I just joined team Rechenkraft germany at some point because it was a german team, I never had any relation to them lol) I thought to myself "aaah, what the heck". So I joined team XS yesterday. Maybe I lost my points because I also set up the account according to my username here, but I don't care. I fold for a cause.

Currently I'm only folding on the quad in my sig, but I also thought about setting up a x4 9750 95w dedicated machine. I wonder what points I would be getting from that... (does anyone has experience with dual smp phenom folding with linux?)

I'm glad I joined, you're all great people! Long live XS!

:welcome: glad you are here. But, Germany? Your location says Beermany  :lol2:

FWIW my X4 9600 stock does anywhere between 1000 PPD on the really slow 2665 project to 1800 on the 2653 project with a single SMP instance in Windows. I don't run dual so I can't help you on that. Perhaps something to get some comparisons out there for you.

Hehe, thank you for the welcome message!

Those ppd's don't look too bad, maybe someone running dual smp's could clear up if there's any benefit on x4's...

Thanks for your welcome, too! :p:

I know that in the end it's not about for which team I did how many points, but about how many WU's I did, so that Stanford might make their breakthrough. But hell, since I'm lurking around here anyway and got much help from XS, I figured giving back is only fair, ey? :D

But what's about those off topic posts.. I never checked into the wcg section? Some fun going on around there?

Oooh thanks you! It's really nice to have so many people greeting me since I joined the team!

But I have a question: I know I'm getting around 4300ppd with the right wu's on my q6600 and, as I already mentioned, I wanted to setup a dedicated cruncher. So I clicked around a bit in online stores and found out that, with matx board+cheapo 2gig ddr2 800 ram+q6600+case, I would be in the same price range as with an 95w x4 9750. So what I'm asking is, with which machine would I be getting more wu's done at a given time frame? I was thinking of going back to green, but I'm getting the feeling that an AMD setup would be less produtive and more energy consuming than an cheapo q6600, which most likely will do 3-3.2ghz even on stock cooling...

The_Barnacle

Yup, right now a Q6600 will get you more ppd for your dollar than a Phenom.

Working on the DC projects here is the best way to give back to XS, according to the site owner here.

That's just sad, I wanted to build an AMD crunching army. But since I'm a poor student who has to get the most out of the little money he earns with side jobs I guess it'll be an Intel one. Hopefully Deneb will be something worth buying in terms of performance per watt, I have to admit I'm an AMD fanboy. But hush, don't tell anyone, since my last two systems including this were Intel ones...

Okay, DC might be the way to go, but I'm a stubborn man, I want to fold! So folding is what my systems will do. But nonetheless will I check the DC sections for some thread derailment reading fun!

Hey we can derail threads here.... I've been the culprit of that before :wasntme:

I'm an AMD man too (as you can tell by my sig lol :D) must come from me liking green so much  I haven't given into the darkside yet though! I just bought a phenom which happens to be all screwy so I gotta RMA it... but I don't want to because then my farm will take a big hit. So I bought an X2 to tide me over while I RMA the phenom, then I got to thinking more (dangerous) and bought a cheap AM2 board and nabbed some 1GB DDR2-800 from ebay for $20 so that I can turn the X2 into a cruncher once my phenom returns.... This addiction gets bad sometimes

Yes, the dark side. I have to admit that I feel all dirty and bad sometimes because of buying first the e6600 and then the q6600. My excuse was "Hey I want to fold, and I want to play Crysis and StarCraft2, so I need a beefy machine". But not everything is lost, since I still have some two or three weeks to decide what the intestines of the head and diskless fold-zombie nr.1 will look like. And you are so right about going overboard with this kind of addiction. Not to forget the power consumption. But ooh well, it's fun and actually it's for the common good, so I guess no one in here should feel bad about his addiction. As long as the wife/gf is okay with it, hehe..:ROTF:

Btw concerning the matx board you want to buy, I checked around a bit, what about this (http://global.msi.com.tw/index.php?func=prodcpusupport&prod_no=1351&maincat_no=1&cat2_no=&cat3_no=#menu) board here?

Nah, no clone, just someone who gets all weepy when he thinks about the old days, when AMD stood up against Intel and K6 or Athlons ruled the planet. Even if those days are over, I wish that AMD would get their act together, fire some apparently stoopid people and then stand up and fight. I know. Wishful thinking... I'm not saying Intel should die or something, since I find their IA64 arch pretty interesting. It's just a feeling I guess.
what comes to my mind right now after I read these (http://www.gizmag.com/ibms-new-bladecenter/9342/) news, I wonder if folding on a cell would be a massacre...

Yeah, I tried to support AMD as long as they were somewhat close in price/performace. I was a big proponent of AMD-Nvidia platform, but when intel introduced their Core2 (especially the quads) chips and then AMD purchased ATI I kind of lost my enthusiasm for them. Hopefully they can come back with something good to win back customer support...

Very true. Not just air but somthing solid would be really good. Maybe ATI's new cards will be a beginning. But I don't see something new on the CPU side, Deneb is just a shrink isn't it?

You can always get some 50 litres of mineral oil and submerge the whole thing in it, put some copper on cpu+gpu and you're all set for the cooling. And if the old crap pile let's out the magic smoke you still have a nice geeky aquarium. With dead parts, bit, nice anyway. :yepp:

Nice that you decided for a board, do you intend to work the Brisbane for a while in it or are you going to put a Phenom in there soon? I'm wondering what will happen when you oc a Phenom on this board? Will it melt or burn your house down? I only owned one MSI board until now (I was running a Turion MT-34 on) and that board was a tank. Well of course the Turion didn't put much strain on it but still I wonder if all their boards are like that...

Oh and I won't be dusting off that dual XP machine, I need to watch my performance/watt ratio until I graduate and get a real job!

Wasn't it so that you would need a x86 license to do that, which nVidia doesn't have? Who knows what would happen if they did start making CPU's, knowing that gt200 will be monster in terms of size, what would a CPU from nVidia look like? Double the size of Montecito, because size matters? :ROTF:

I plan to run the brisbane for a while. My budget doesn't allow for much. Not all MSI boards are tanks, one recent model people have had issues with them burning through their mosfets too often to be considered a random failure. More like a design flaw. With the new AMD Phenom X3 wonder what kind of ppd you could get running 1 GPU2 client and 1 smp client with a high end graphics card or maybe a AMD Phenom X4 with 2 high end graphics cards running 2 GPU2 clients and 1 smp client that could be a real monster folder if you could find a big enough power supply to feed it.

Don't make me think of insane ideas... Like an X4 + 2x 4870x2, running one smp and 4 gpu clients, if thats even possible.. :slobber:

A box like that would put me right up there with Angra...

Btw, what is it with Ohio and sheep? Did I miss something? :)

Randomly insert a statement with Ohio and sheep and see what happens, lol.:D

A quality 750w could handle that.

Yes of course, but what you actually see in PSU load tests (check 80plus.org) is that peak efficiency is always around 40-60 percent of total power. So if you choose a smaller PSU just because it could run the box you're actually wasting energy. IMO thats why those 1kw PSU's are not only show off. 200w for an oc'd quad, two 4870x2 ~400-500w. This is exactly the best scenario for a 1kw psu..

Each GPU client on a 3870 get around 2000ppd? So 2x 4870x2 could get 10,000ppd on one box? That would be awesome...

Awesome.
This rig maybe sucks 600w from the wall. But then again, setup 3 q6600 rigs, they have the same consumption, but set up correctly they produce more ppd. Then again you could actually play crisis on that dual 48070x2. Then again...

I know I know... it will happen after this weekend once I get the brisbane put in its place so I can still use my PC. It'll hold out until then... I hope :para: And fingers crossed for the B3! Would be sweet if AMD got another core revision out that cut the power consumption and increased overclockability.. like a G0? :D in my dreams! :p:

Hehe, yes because wasn't that in the news that b3's the last ervision for 65nm amd quads? Still I would have prefered that they kept the name Phenom for the shrink... :shakes:

D'oh.. I fell for it!!! :rofl::ROTF:

I would check jonnyguru.com about that... most of the reputable companies have 80+ efficiency from 30-90% load. You won't notice a difference between 84% and 80%.

I don't know about jonnyguru, but most pcper reviews state the same as what I have concluded from 80plus.org, both of which I find pretty reliable.

It's awesome to think about guys, but i don't think Crossfire is supported right now. Even the X2 ATI cards can't detect the second GPU :(
