I have in my newegg shopping cart an MSI K9NGM4-F V.2 AM2+ uATX board and an X2 4400+ 2.3GHz Brisbane. I was thinking of getting a CPU to put in my board while I RMA my phenom.. then thought hey why don't I get a board so when I get my phenom back I can put it to use as a cruncher?

Should I do it? It'll cost me $113.

Part of the reason to buy the X2 would be to test to be sure my issue isn't the board. Getting intel would totally not help me at all with that ;) Plus would cost more.

He knows I'm just kidding... I hassle him about his "green" farm all the time. I think it's time he switched to a blue farm.;)

I figured as much. Good luck with the board mate.

My main PC is a quad :) That's the only one I can afford right now. I could drop $300 on a Q6600 + board but that's just too much. I have to save a few grand over the next 14 weeks for school, plus I have my car payments, gas, food, car maintenance, etc......
Sucks getting older, yeah more money coming in but also much more going out.

Blast! One of these days, I will pull up on the dirt road to the fold farm with a coupla' Intel quads in the back of my pick up truck and destroy your green farm's points. :hammer:

Another cardboard box... :ROTF:

Sparky that board rocks I think, but I wonder if it will support Phenom X4's?

I'm thinking of putting together a dedicated Phenom folder and that board looks really nice me thinks. What's the ppd one can expect with a Phenom?

when you get through testing... put the x2 on mepis and let it fold. I picked up about 150ppd when I switched my x2 4600 to mepis from xp.
so easy it's ridiculous..
dl 64bit iso http://www.mepis.org/mirrors
run the install and auto synaptic update... (very easy, even for a linux noob like me). pretty much runs itself..

then install smp and away you go. (open a terminal wiindow and copy paste)

INSTALL CLIENT
mkdir -p ~/FAH1
cd ~/FAH1
wget http://www.stanford.edu/group/pandegroup/folding/release/FAH6.02beta1-Linux.tgz
tar xzvf FAH6.02beta1-Linux.tgz
./fah6 -configonly

RUN CLIENT
cd ~/FAH1
./fah6 -smp

it's much more stable than my windows clients too. I don't think I've ever had an eue on this box since I went to mepis.

anyway, just fyi, in case you want to use it.

Well it says it does, it is AM2+, and one of the newegg reviews that I read said it worked fine. That's why I got it, so I could perhaps get an X4 for it later on down the road.

MikeB12, thanks for the info, I may do that.

Don't want to burst any bubbles but it's been no more than 2weeks ago that some sites found out a lot of mATX AM2+ boards can't even handle the power drawn by a X4.

Imo they should stop making motherboards who "support quadcore's" with only a 4pin CPU AUX en less than 4phase cpu power. It's just asking for disasters if you put a quad in such a thing. Especially now with the Phenoms begin such power hogs.

I'm gonna let you in on a little secret.................$150- Radeon HD3870  2000+ PPD. I'm going to get one for the other rig, the only problem right now is if you eventually do get a Quad i don't think SMP is playing nice with GPU2 so you might have to run 3 consoles :( I heard if you set GPU2 priority to "slightly higher" you'll be fine, but who knows if you'll meet preferred deadlines. :shrug:Or just ditch it, run 2 consoles and get another 3870 for Crossfire :D My games would run like hell and it'd be a Folding monster, which will turn my room into an oven most likely yikes!

I dunno, my opteron 165 was drawing closer to 180W and it was on a 4 pin CPU power and 3 phase

Maybe I should go that route with the 3870, stick one of those in a single core crunching box :hrhr: Guess I'd need a bit more powerful PSU than an old ATX 1.13 spec 250W PSU tho :p:

dang it guys you made me drool all over my keyboard, again! :p:

No that won't happen, gfx card won't get upgraded for a long while yet. I only have so much $$$ to burn because of the cost of school and gotta save for the upcoming semester (and actually I probably shouldn't have burned what I just did on that CPU and board but oh well, TOO LATE :D).

well, you did add 1k ppd with the x2 addtion. plus later on this summer or fall, maybe prices will settle on the 4870's and you'll be back in the market... I bet those will be monster folders if fah can crank out some wu's that will optimize on it..

The thing about the light bulbs: sooner or later it blows up:devil:

Besides if guys like Sparky and myself weren't keeping AMD from going down all the way, there would be no $200 Quads , just $1000 Preshot Emergency
Editions :p:

I think the ATI 3870-3850 prices will drop even more once the new 4xxx
come out, can't go wrong with one for ~100 or less

Since you don't have a 9850, you'll probably be ok. Just don't try to bench with LN2 on the thing :). MSI already ran into trouble with the mosfets popping on another board due to poor power design for the quads, and made revisions to their boards to avoid further problems.
