View Full Version : Danger Den 8800GTX Thermal Tape or TIM for memory?

I'm wondering, as I look at the clearances of my DD-8800GTX block when lined up with my 880GTX card, whether or not the copper surfaces will actually make contact with the memory and power regulators.

I know the center of the block will make contact with the GPU but, it appears as if there's a gap between the memory and the block. SO . . . should I use thermal tape to bridge that gap or will screwing the block to the card bring the copper in contact with the TIM I would spread on the memory and power regulation chips?

Please let me know what your experience has been with the DD-880GTX water blocks.

Thanks!!

Follow their instructions:

I have four 8800 GTXs with their blocks and have been extremely happy (also have a fifth 8800 GTX with a block not yet installed). My four are BFGs with factory installed block. I also have an 8800 GTS with a DD block.

I guess I didn't look hard enough. I was looking all over their site for some info and couldn't manage to find that. Thank you for the link!!

Do you know whether or not users have found their install method to yield the best results?

I'd imagine that it does since you posted the link but, it doesn't hurt to ask.

Thanks again

If you use TIM, I would alway try a test mount once to ensure the past spread on all the appropriate contact areas. If it doesn't then you'll know.

The poor alignment of all those little chips isn't usually very good though, that's why all the manufacturers use tape...better to have a thick tape that's not cooling as well than one chip that doesn't get any cooling because of a gap. The memory is usually pretty tolerant to heat anyway.
