Just wanted to see what all of you thought of CentOS for use in a server. Is it a good solid choice, or is there a better Linux ditro for the job?

Thanks!

CentOS is the free version (no support) of Red Hat. I have Fedora (desktop version of Red Hat) and is awesome. Very reliable. CERN and Fermi Labs use
Red Hat actually (well is a little modified and called Scientific Linux).
So I strongly recommend CentOS. However SUSE had the best networking ever. Kind of unstable though, but depending on what you want to do with it, you might want to check it out

Agreed, CentOS is basically Red Hat with everything that says "Red Hat" removed from the legalese. Other than that they are pretty much identical.

Thanks guys, CentOS sounds pretty awesome given that fact. I would be inclined to also look into Suse, but stability is extremely important to what I will be doing (e-commerce).

If anybody else has any opinions or suggestions at all I am 100% all ears!

Well if stability is what you need then go with CentOS. I had it running as a VMware host in a lab environment for almost three years, and the only time it went down is if someone unplugged it because they didn't know what it was or what it was doing.

Centos is great, however for ecommence give FreeBSD or OpenBSD a look it :)

incase you didnt know freebsd ran Hotmail.com for while until windows was up to the job.(win 2003)

"Businesses and organizations with servers powered by FreeBSD: Amiga.com, Amiga.de, Apache.org (the Apache Project), Be.com (makers of the BeOS), Hotmail.com (Microsoft spent months attempting to switch Hotmail from FreeBSD to Windows 2000 — the fact that it took Microsoft months should tell you everything you need to know about the “quality” of Windows 2000), LinkExchange (owned by Microsoft), Netcraft.com, OSdata.com, Sony Japan, TeenWitch.com, WitchingHour.net, Yahoo.com"
