View Full Version : What does burning AS5 smell like?

Ok well I just finished putting my rig back together after having upgraded my CPU to a Q6700...

-Q6700
-DFI X48-T2R
-Xigmatek S1283
-Corsair VX550
-EVGA 8800GTS (G92)
-Ect Ect

I made the jump to 3.8ghz on 1.44vCORE and ran a few benches... Those settings appeared to be bench stable. But about 4 mins into P95 I smelled something odd, at first I thought it was my retarded roommate failing again at cooking for himself. Then I realized it was coming from my computer. So I cut it off opened it up and couldn't really see anything.

So my question is simple, What would smell of stale crackers? I may have put to much AS5 on IHS... Could that be it?

Thanks in advance.

strange...but i would check components see if there is any obvious problems..then maybe start examining the capacitors for leakage.

I checked caps, all the PSU connectors(molex, 8pin EPS, main ATX, PCIe, sata) and GFX card...

It was a pain in the arse to mount the S1283 vertically, the NB HS left me very little room to work with(and I was blessed with ogre size hands)... So I really only want to take off the Xigmatek if and when I buy a bolt on kit. The smell only occured after 3-4 minutes of running prime95 and when temps were closing in on 55°C that's kind of why I thought maybe I had put to much AS5 on...

Even now while benching a little there's absolutely no smell...

I love the smell of new computer parts. After a new build your room smells like it for almost a month. :D

I was going to offer the opinion that it might be a burnt cap or blown fan, but you'd probably describe that as a burning smell.

I've been unable to duplicate the phenomena... So it's either that new car smell as you guys have pointed out or my cat let loose a rank arse fart by my PSU... No worries considering my comp is still going strong after running P95 for 2 hours I think it's safe to say it was a fluke(I hope).

Slightly OT:

FPO/Batch : L727A643 Vid : 1.275(Not earth shattering I know)

Seems newegg still has some good old Quads in stock... I was able to run SPI1M @ 4.0 ghz on 1.49vCORE. Perhaps I will save up to go WC.

it's the psu and the condensators on the mobo, you shouldn't smell this, the best way is to fire up some intensive orthos + 3dmark on your pc and let it run in a well ventilated area, preferably on balcony or smth ;] (if it's not -15C out there ;]] ) The chemicals used for the electronic equipment to protect it during the shipment phase may be harmfull on long term ;] so "burn in" them in the first time.
