I've never actually thought about this, although I've done it millions of times.

You know you install a non-portable application on your pen drive, does it matter?

Urm, i don't know how to really explain what I mean.
Let's say you install Firefox on your pen drive, and you run it off it too.
Now let's say you use the same pen drive on another computer, will it still work? ( or should it work?).

Is it okay as long as no files are installed into /system32/ or registry? ( similar)

If that even makes sense :S

Cheers

You can have the program install things anywhere it wants, as long as the settings are stored in the install dir (the pen drive), then you can go to another computer and do a similar install (to the same pen drive), and then you can go back and forth while keeping all the same settings.

The new version of Internet Explorer or Windows is supposed to navely support something like this, but I think it's going to use the Windows Live services to store settings.

If there is no dependant data in the registry and all the required DLL files are either on the host system or same folder as the applications executable and no unique user profiles are required for the app or the target for these files is set to a folder on the USB key then I cannot see why not.
