8800gts 640 VS. 9800gtx Help!

I've been reading many reviews and I still can't decide if I should buy a 9800gtx. I know I can get one at $270 and sell my 8800gts 640 for at least $100. So what do you guys think I should do? If I can get 20fps more in all my games for me it would be worth it. If you know of any good reviews please post the links.

you'd see a large performance increase just going up to a 8800 GTS (G92)... let alone a 9800 GTX

Only if you overclock it to its limits. At stock clocks its not that much better, if at all.

Just get a 8800GTS 512. They have the same G92 core, and cost $60 less.

if you look at the xs 9800gtx review thread link I posted (last one) then you'll see a little chart of FPS differences between some popular cards...

although there is no 8800 GTS (G80) 640, there is the 8800 GTX (which is notably better then the GTS) which gets 5-20 FPS lower then what the 9800 GTX does... then factoring in the difference between the GTX and GTS, you'll see probably anywhere from 5-40 FPS

I recently made that switch and while you certainly won't see massive 20+ FPS boost in games like World in Conflict and Crysis but the performance increase is very noticeable. I got 12 more FPS in Crysis with the 9800GTX for example and around 5-6 more in World in Conflict and my other games I didn't even bother to check simply because they were running well enough with the 8800GTS to not be able to notice the difference. The card also runs much cooler even when overclocked but if you don't want to spend that much on an upgrade the 8800GTS 512MB is a terrific choice since the differences between the cards are minimal and the price difference is pretty large.

the gts 512 and 9800gtx are the same card esentaly but the gtx has some qibmonda were most og the gts have samsung so the gts is more stable and the ram will oc to the same speed


i would wait until mid june to buy its not that much of an upgrade, and the new cards are out soon from ati then 2 weeks later NV has another die shrink

u can use riva tuner and get the same voltage, but most gts have samsung memory

If your 8800gts is an EVGA and is model number 640-P2-N821-AR, let me know because I will buy it from you.. That will solve half of your problem. :D

Thanks for all the help that cleared things up. I can always trust XS community on hardware issues. I'll look around to see what OCs people are getting on the GTS 512. Let me get this right. The memory on the 512s is generally better than the memory found on the 9800gtx?

Right now I play vegas 2 and call of duty 4 @ 1920x1200 cod4 is ok but vegas is crap even with a 8800gts 640.

R6V2 is an Ubisoft 360 port. it doesn't run terribly well on any PC.
