View Full Version : How often do WU's crash?

I finally got around to setting up 2 clients of the console version here on my E6600 machine last night.

At first, I had 1 client running and folding happily, and couldn't figure out how to get the second to boot as a service... it just wouldn't do it. Said to hell with it and just left the command prompt open all night. The first client finished its WU and sent it successfully, and the second one just crashed its WU about 10 minutes after I started using my computer.

It said this might be a normal part of the WU, or that it might have been due to system instability/check overclocking settings. How often does this happen?

Also, where can I check my stats?

For a dual core it's probably better to just run the SMP client. If you were trying to run 2 SMP clients on a dual core that is highly unrecommended. But I get WU crashes on occasion, not very often but enough to frustrate me from time to time.

As for checking stats you can either go to Stanford's official site...
http://folding.stanford.edu/English/Stats
Click on "Team Statistics" -> "xtremesystems.org" -> username

or you can go to one of the third party stat pages like EOC...

I would run the SMP, but I can't start it as a service according to the F@H website.

You can run it as a service, just follow the instructions on this thread... I have it running in XP-Pro SP2 and Vista Ulitmate 64-bit

Hmm... the Stanford site said they didn't support running it as a service.

It doesn't support it officially as in if you get errors you will have to rely on us to help instead of the regular support forum, though I think you would get some help there to.

In the log file for the SMP one, it doesn't have the "Step x of y completed"... does it? I've been loaded 100% on both cores for about 10 minutes now and I can't see any work getting done.

it does, but 10 minutes isn't quite long enough. My dual core takes about 13-16 minutes per frame (percentage).

Also, I may be just extremely lucky but I have actually never had a WU crash on me. Running the SMP client as a service can be a pain t get configured, but once you d it is smooth sailing. My computer runs 24/7 so I don't have to worry. However, I recommend that if you are going to be restarting you run the service in manual mode because sometimes it will hang on start up in automatic.

Got the console client version running on the P4 2.8c downstairs too. What the family doesn't know about folding won't hurt em...

I figured it would be a nice birthday present Sparks. ;)

Search for my username and you'll find 4 teams each off them been me ;) It's no problem if you want to use the same name.

Welcome to the team btw, happy folding

I usually loose a couple of wu's per month average between my 3 clients most of the time its due to either me trying to push the over clock to the limit or the ambient temp getting abnormally high prior to me lowering the over clock for the summer months ie my own fault. But I can not complain too much loosing a couple of wu's out of approx 90 in a month thats between 2 to 3% which is pretty good for a beta client.
