View Full Version : Test if your ISP is manipulating BitTorrent traffic

Our test focuses on the popular BitTorrent protocol as many ISPs are suspected to manipulate BitTorrent traffic. This type of traffic can be identified by the port it is sent on (e.g., TCP port 6881) or by BitTorrent content headers which occur in the packets.
Therefore, we designed our online tool to detect whether your ISP is using one of the following techniques:
* Throttling all BitTorrent traffic.
* Throttling all traffic at well-known BitTorrent ports.
* Throttling BitTorrent traffic only at well-known BitTorrent ports.
Note that some ISPs do not throttle all BitTorrent traffic but only if this traffic exceeds a certain threshold. Thus, passing our tests does not necessary mean that there is no throttling occurring on your link.

Yeah apparently it's popular. Though I found it linked off the main page of Reddit which has a sizeable audience.
Saw it on torrentfreak earlier, same thing.
On Cox here, and they don't really do squat with mine. Love my connection too. Dayumed near hit 1Mb/sec this morning. or was it 1MB? ah hell I dunno I've blinked a few times since then.
Cox will taper you off if you DL too much, but I'm on the big boys subscription supposedly, so don't think I have too much to worry about. ^_^

Nice tool. I'm not gonna try though, I already know Time Warner does zero messing with my BT.

That is also my impression and findings with my ISP:
3 Denmark / 3G HSDPA (7.1 Mb / 1.0 Mb)
Unlimited download and with no cutoff in rates (at least with >200 GB downloaded in a month). I use it both with my desktop (that have another connection), and on the road with my DTR laptop and at work. Works as intended.

I never download that much, though I can upload around 50Gb / month, sometimes more sometimes less.

I'll test next time I download. Probably tomorrow.

Well, I haven't really got beyond ~30 GB / month upload ever. And I think I have only got beyond ~6 GB upload that single month.
Another thing, I don't understand why upload rate is more expensive to get than download rate, or why connections are so asynchronous. Upload or download, it should all put an equal strain on the ISP network, right? Could be wrong, but I wonder.
I would rather have a 3.5 Mb / 3.5 Mb, than a 7.1 Mb / 1.0 Mb connection.

Qwest has never messed with my internets :)
And it was announced recently that Qwest is updating all their systems to fibre optic  :D

Iv been wondering this for a while. Not just for torrents (which i can only download at 20 or so kbs on a 2mbps connection) but also online gaming sux in NZ. On my pc, xbox 360 or ps3 i always get bad lag.
