not that I'm personally interested in destroying HHDs, just thought some of you might enjoy the article :D :
extract:
"Disk drives are extraordinarily resilient. I've seen one that had been run over, dropped in a toilet and then thrown out of the window of a seven-storey office block. It looked unusable. Kroll Ontrack managed to recover virtually all the data on it by drying it and taking it apart."

Gutmann wipe is better, easier, and less wastefully. Why ruin perfectly good hard drives when most of the world doesn't even have a computer.

cheaper, faster, and liability reasons.

I used to smash hard drives at a high security military research lab. My weapon of choice, 5 pound sledge hammer. 1 hit for the PCB, 1 hit for the motor winding, then 1 hit for each corner of the drive. After this I believe they were burnt/melted. Good luck recovering the data from the mound of metal :yeep:

I'm just a bit curious if some of you are aware of how much damage a drive can take and data still be recoverable.
I thought I saw a post here about a hard drive that was on a shuttle crash that was fried when it exploded.
The drives were pretty roasty toasty.
They recovered data.

Acegoober from over at the old DFI street used to take his 50cal to hard drives.
he showed me a video of him doing it one time., that rifle was like a rocket launcher with a should stock lol..
pig plume of dust came up around him when he shot it,,
i dont recall how many hard drives he said he did at once but it was quite a few of them.

I recently shot through 10 at one time with my .50 BMG. :) I have a few more I need to get rid of, so I'll shoot some video.

I got to see that thing in the OP in action early June at a conference. Its kinda cool... Wiping the drives doesn't really get all the data off and like others have mentioned the drive needs to be very damaged to make it truly destroyed. Shooting drives can get expensive with large amounts of drives, plus it's a rather unstable method.

Ontrack is good at marketing but the things they do can be done by lots of companies nowadays... Nothing special anymore. The little trick behind that story is that the drive was a 400MB old Seagate drive. There used to be A LOT less things that can go wrong inside the drive plus the platters were rather resiliant to damage due to the low data density. All they did is the take the platters out from that drive, clean them (thats actually not too easy) and stick them into another head disk assembly. I think they only did one out of the three drives as well or something to the extent if the memory serves me right.

Screw that. This is how I would destroy them.

wouldnt exposing them to a microwave/intense magnetic radiation be enough to f the drive up?
